I’m gutted with how the Defender has changed a few years ago. It’s all plastic and posh instead of the rugged old machine.

Yes the Series 2A looks pretty good but I just loved my series one and 2 V8i Disco's! The better looking of all of the disco's apart from the parts bin headlights from a Sherpa van that is lol, at least until the very last iteration of the series 2 Disco's with the facelift front.

At 4.00 a good tip beside what you said is wiggle the steering wheel back and forth to get the sides of the tyres biting. Better tyres help too😉
It's nice hearing the Series get'er done without the music in some mint terrain.

As I recall, the original one was an "all aluminum" body which made it relatively light and so less prone to bog down. The modern one looks much more heavy and less nimble.

Would also be interesting to find a good still running Austin Gypsy to compare to more modern 4x4's.
Back in the late 70's or early 80's we tried to drive up beside the lake coleridge dam pipeline(Worked for NZED), nobody could get the landcruisers etc up.
So we grabbed the ancient gypsy with grass growing out of rust holes all over it, and had a go.
First triers had no luck, but then i was finally given a go, i just let it idle slowly up, avoiding getting any slip , and made the top, much to everyone's annoyance.
Imo sometimes older can really be better, at doing some things, in some conditions, if used correctly.
Would be interesting to see how well my 06 v8 touareg or 2010 manual jimny would compare on such a slippery steep climb.

@@hayden_jones I used to live in the Northern Territory and my 2 mates who are both mechanics only own and use older 4 wheel drives fully decked out with all the gear needed to truly go bush and because the older vehicles do not have any computer chips or electronics whatsoever to get wet or corroded etc so only regular tools are needed to fix any mishaps that occur while going for a trip in the bush. Much simpler and much cheaper than any modern day computer driven four wheel drives.

Now I have to tell you folks something, besides how awesome your vids are..
In Canada, if you drive in rivers and such, the powers that be will skin you alive.
The size of our country and there is none of this happening..
Now, we do go four wheeling and the such, but the fisheries and conservation people are known as "bush pigs" here as they operate with the same authority as the police, but with very bad attitudes for the most part.... and they are happy as all get out to exhibit that "right of power", over individuals they find in the woods, BUT, as soon as you need advice or have to report an actual offence, like their street counterparts, they are woefully absent..
The rivers and streams, while plentiful, are forbidden territories for trucks, and vehicles of any kind..
So, it is so nice to see that you guys, and folks like Kev's 110,(which I also follow), are able to go on these adventures and show us your part of the world...which I am looking forward to exploring.
    Oh yeah...by the way.
    In case it matters...
60 years old, mechanic,( commercial, heavy duty, automotive), hydraulic mechanic, welder, commercial drivers license with air endorsement on brakes, electrical in vehicle and housing, just in case some one might be looking for a worker...(hint, hint).
If you don't mind answering, where are you from?
    My wife is from Rotorua.
Get this...her son went to school with a Hayden Jones.....?

Can old out perform the new? Yes of course. When you find yourself somewhere far from walk in mechanic, all difference that truly matter will show its face...nice touch is for example, ability to make head gasket, out of leather jacket, or any real leather, and fit it on to engine and keep going..and all that with basic tools...this sort of things matter when you do real journeys, away from usually available mechanic...

Was the old one a "Discovery"? Ynot compare the old Series to a D90 1994-1997? Heck, any Series I-III and D90 can enter a parking garage whereas a Discovery cannot.

I would say your assertion is quite accurate, at least as far as Land Rovers here in the US, especially newer ones. I think they do better with in the confines of the former British Empire. Brits understand British engineering. Please don't be too offended my British friends, I wouldn't own a Chrysler product built after 1970 either ! Even if I lived next to a Chrysler dealership and was married to the owners daughter.

@@johnossendorf9979 I wouldn't have a new one if you gave it to me. My daily driver is a 27 year old Discovery. Wouldn't swap it for a new 4x4 currently on sale regardless of the make. It does all I require and it's cheap and reliable. Those who denigrate old Land Rovers obviously have never used one that has been properly maintained and not been the victim of non standard modification.
