- Motion blur can make your motion graphics and visual effects look more appealing and realistic. But while motion blur inside of After Effects is easy to turn on, it can be hard to understand. In this tutorial we delve into the various motion blur settings and learn why these settings exist and how to adjust them intentionally. Let's get blurry!

gotta say, this is probably the most in-deep explanation of how motion blur works on whole youtube. very cool, thanks.
Understanding the 'why' is so important as we create. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the comment!
Not only do I love how in depth you explained this, I also appreciate the effort to make it understandable. Thank you!
I appreciate the kind feedback! So glad it was helpful!
Wow, thank you for explaining this in so much detail!
Glad it was helpful!
This will be very help ful for edits thanks.
that frame rate part saved me. i was so confused why motion blur wouldnt work
Glad to hear it!
THANKKK YOUUUUU FOR YOUR EXPLANATIONNNN
very useful, thank you.
woah what an eyeopener 🤩 thank u i needed this for my gifs 💙
👀 Glad it helped! Happy creating!
Wow. What a great and informative video. Excellent! Thank you.
You’re welcome! Glad it was helpful.
you did a great job expplaining it thank you!
great and professional tutorial, sub!thx mate ;-)
Man... you're very good at this! Keep going!
Thank you! More coming!
Very informative. It puzzles me that EVERYBODY talks about, the necessity of ND filters and the 180 shutter-rule. Can’t you get as good as a motion blur in post (like Davinci Studio)? One would be more flexible and wouldn’t have the hassle with the NDs all the time. Hardly anybody talks about the negatives/restrictions of using an ND filter like, color-casting, vignetting, having to use a higher ISO sometimes, not being able to use polarizers with a variable ND filter which is usually less of a quality anyway, bad stabilizing results, etc.
If the motion blur is only done in post, without NDs, how good and easy is the result of a proper motion blur and quality?
great thx!
thx for the good explanation. I glad that I found you channel.

Thanks for the sub!
This was great! So well edited and explained, thanks. Maybe this is a silly qu. but I am wondering why motion blur appears on both sides? Shouldn't the blur use the movement for reference? i.e. trailing behind the object?
Thanks for sharing... always a murky subject for me!
Happy to help make it less murky!
thanks
omg ty
Nice very good loved the pie 🥧explainer part of the video 📹👌
Thanks Sal!

More planned!
man you just saved me from hella work
Mission accomplished 🫡
So I have a quick question. I’ve had after effects for about 4-5 months and I don’t have the boxes that you click to add motion blur, how do you add those?
If you right click on the header area of that panel, you will see a side menu called Columns. There you can select which columns you want visible. You want the column called ‘Modes and Switches.’
Excellent video bro, congratulations. In my case when I activate the motion blur the rendering time increases drastically. Goes from 3 minutes to 20 minutes. The preview is also very slow. It's normal?
Hey thanks! That seems like a significant jump but it is definitely normal and expected to make your project more processor intensive once motion blur is involved. It’s not uncommon for me to turn off the main ‘switch’ while I preview so I can move quickly until it’s time to render.
Hey! When I turn on motion blur and move something, the motion blur doesnt work
Any solutions? I checked the layer motion blur and the active all motion blur option but nothing happens :/
Thanks for the comment! Did you go into the advanced settings to see what your shutter angle is set to? Also make sure that whatever you’re moving is moving enough to warrant motion blur (sometimes slower things won’t look blurry even tho blur is on). You can try pulling your keyframes closer together to see if that brings the blur out more.
@@itsalantime ty for responding, i'm not in my home right now, but when I come back I will try the things you told me
Thanks!
@@AYLyricss he didn't make it home for 11 months, someone send cop to find him
when i turn on motion blur in a video, render time per second increases it from 2 ms to 1,14 seconds! what do i need to do?
@ottoghost that’s pretty standard. Motion blur is super processor heavy. You can either lower your preview resolution or just keep blur off until you’re ready to export (which is what I normally do).
it change a thing if we turn motion blur on audio?
Hm, there’s no motion blur in audio, so nothing should happen! Because everything will preview a bit slower, the audio will sometimes sound super slow motion until the preview is does rendering.
Hi brother how do I communicate with you because I'm having a problem with motion blur?
Hey thanks for the comment. I don’t currently have a mode of communicating outside this channel. Feel free to ask your question here! Odds are, someone else will have a similar issue.
@@itsalantime My motion blur does not move. When I zoom in or out, It stopped.
Hm. So your switches are on but nothing is blurring? Have you checked your shutter angle in the settings? Also, make sure your layer you want to have blur is moving fast enough. Like real motion blur, After Effects won’t blur things that are moving slowly. Lemme know if these help narrow down the issue.
@@itsalantime I'm done all this, but the problem is still there. Can I send you a photo of this issue?
When I try clicking on the "switch" it just makes every icon next to in including motion blur blue and nothing happens
I figured it out
Nice work on the troubleshoot!
@@itsalantime thanks, great video
@@mariogroza5704how did you do it? I’m having a similar issue
i dont have a motionblur checkbox pls help
Right-click the area with the column names/titles and an option menu pops up with a side menu called ‘columns.’ From there, you can check ‘Switches’ and the motion blur checkbox will appear!
my question is if the video fps is 30, then what would my shutter angle be?
Math time! It’s actually still 180. Think of 180 as natural motion blur. Regardless of frame rate? Yup and here’s why: the general rule of thumb for natural motion blur in film says that your shutter SPEED should always be 1/Twice your frame rate. So for 24fps, your shutter speed should be 1/48. For 30fps, your shutter speed should be 1/60, etc.
Now for conversion. To get shutter ANGLE from shutter SPEED, you multiply the fps by 360 and divide by your shutter speed denominator. So 24x360 divided by 48 gives you 180. Uniquely, 30x360 divided by 60 also gives you 180! Pretty cool!
@@itsalantime holy crap my mind's blown, thanks for the info.
I don’t have the check boxes it just disappeared how do I get it back
If you right click on the header area of that panel, you will see a side menu called Columns. There you can select which columns you want visible. You want the column called ‘Modes and Switches.’
I'm seeing a "curvy" David Boreanaz - when that baby fat comes off... man man man...Ag...um what I mean to say is: Blur yes, blur all about the blur... Thank you for sharing your knowledge about motion blur in a crisp, clear manoeuvre. Much love and God bless... Angel
ps How do I motion blur a pre-composed 3d layer? (still learning AE, a million years later).
Motion blur doesnt apply tried everything
What’s the frame rate of your comp?
you mean refresh rate? no sure what is frame rate man, sry. if its Ref rat than 165hz@@itsalantime
If you go to 'Composition' in the menu bar and choose 'Composition Settings,' what is the Frame Rate (frames per second) of your comp? I ask because if it's high (like 60 or above), you won't notice motion blur despite it being on.
@@itsalantime i will check,thank you man 🔥
@@itsalantime frame rate 29.27 frames per second drop frame, samples per frame 16
