Just more of an explanation, for anyone that's interested: The trick here is the relationship between those super bright highlights and midtones/shadows. Because the source footage is an mp4, and therefore an 8bit image that has been tonemapped and gamma corrected to fit in a 0-255 (or 0-1 if we're talking float values) range, the highlights value gets heavily compressed towards the other values. This looks nice and natural to our eyes, but isn't good for compositing. In film/TV vfx, footage is shot on expensive cameras that shoot raw or log footage. Raw is light information straight from the sensor (roughly speaking), and log footage is a logarithmic encoding of the same linear values. When light values are represented linearly, as they are in the real world, highlights like the lights on the one wheel can go far beyond a value of 1, they're not compressed to look good on your monitor. All the operations in compositing software like Nuke (and AE when in 32bit mode) are simple, mathematical operations that can be used to emulate what real world light does, but only if the image your working on is linear. If this clip was linear values in the first place, the lights might have a value of 15, and the concrete at 0.5. But because it's a tonemapped mp4, the light is probably reaching 1 (at least in red), and the concrete might be 0.4. So the light is only being represented as twice as bright, when it could actually be 30+ times brighter! The "exposure sandwich", or rather "gamma sandwich" trick smashes down the midtones into shadow territory, while highlights at/near a value of 1 remain unchanged. So it's just faking the relationship between highlights and midtones/shadows. So the light stays around 0.9 - 1.0, and the concrete goes way down to 0.02 or something. Obviously this looks really weird and contrasted, but now that relationship has been faked, the motion blur acts "more correct" and physically accurate, you just need to reverse what was done to restore the original values. So this is a great trick to fake linear values on non linear images, and therefore get more accurate blurs/convolves/colour operations etc. It's essentially roughly reversing the gamma correction applied by the camera when recording. Some extra rambling: Streaky motion blur in highlights is actually dimming the value of that highlight, but when it's done for real, in camera, the highlight that was a value of 15, might go down to 5, which is still far above 1. Because both the non-motion blurred and motion blurred highlights have *linear* values above 1, when the camera tonemaps it and compresses it into an mp4, they both get mapped to around 1, and look the same in the resulting video.

With the same technique you can create nice Bokehs in your comps. Just place a camera lens blur Effect between 2 exposures. But you have to adjust the gammas a bit. maybe try 0,7 and 1.4.
That's amazing! My first guess was that you'd isolate the highlights, duplicate the layer, add Mo blur and screen back on top, but this seems way better.
The technique in the video doesn't work for me. It turns it all blue when I turn up the gamma on the second exposure. Shutter Authority's technique will do for now.

Fantastic tip Clint! An extra to it, this (should) work for more realistic glow effects as well. Giving better roll off between the way the glow effects the highlights compared to mids (I say "should" work as I haven't tested in AE but it works in other programs)
I would love quick tips like this one, but on Octane. I use octane in blender, but I usually can follow octane tutorials in cinema 4d as well, then apply the knowledge to octane in blender.

I'm having trouble with some displacement maps breaking the edges of the mesh, as far as I know this also happens on cinema 4d, but apparently there's a work around in c4d that I can't use in blender. besides that is great. I still find octane way better in realism. better than cycles or redshift. so I'm kinda stuck with octane for now. otherwise I would be using eevee with ssgi and cycles.
I'd love to get a real primer on blending and blending modes. There are pretty good videos out there but I feel like I'd REALLY get it when you explain it 😄

Finally someone addresses this topic directly. Thought I was going crazy! I'm trying to figure out how a high shutter speed greenscreen mocap footage can be restored to a native 24fps 1/48 motion blur. Their must be some industry standard technique for this..

Didn't get the same results with Pixel Motion Blur, if anything it looked pretty great before. It actually does a pretty decent job at preserving the highlights
As a high school student who is trying to build their portfolio, I feel like 3D CGI is the next step I can take for video editing. I have access to both Blender and Cinema 4D but both are very intimidating for a program I have never used before. Most tutorials online will teach you how to model or do character animation but I really want to focus on the visual effects side. If you could make tutorials on particle simulations, how to composite 3D into AE or what you should know when doing visual effects or anything within 3D software that's meant for beginners would be amazing.
Love these tutorials. Your work on integrating CG into a scene was very thorough yet welcoming and wasn't overwhelming at all. Great tutorial style and content. I wonder if you'd considered tutorials on the flip side of that particular coin; 3D set extension, integration and tracking? Placing keyed actors into CG vehicles or sci-fi settings and so on.

Hey, you asked what do I want to learn. First off I do not know know what to learn in After Effects specificly. I need to know what skills do I need to have for certain specialization. I am into animating characters (first) and motion graphics (second). You making a list of skills that I need besides pure animation (moving DUIK controlers) would be an awesome one. Those skills could translate into tutorials of specific like 10 things that would improve/know for: character or motion animation etc. You may have a different list of things of MUST know things to do in AE for other specific specialization.

Totally!! You might be better doing both though! Cause it does nip the darks and mids a bit much in this example.
