    Using the rhythm channel for rhythm…how novel. I think most of us often make the mistake of trying to replicate a mixed and mastered tone (usually too scooped and overdriven) instead of the actual raw tone (usually fuller and cleaner) from which the album tone was created.

      That always drove me crazy when the other guitarist would pile on the gain to his sound. You still have to factor in the speakers breaking up, as well as the power tubes doing the magic at volume. You slop on massive amounts of gain and you lose any sign of a muscular tone. Everything just turns to mush.

Ola I've been watching your channel since 2019 or so and I can say your doing a killer job with all these interviews, reviews of pedals and guitars, plus you got the master himself to have ☕ with you!! I´ve met him some 15 years ago, during a workshop in Frankfurt, Germany and it was a special experience, that I´ll never forget! I´m a little bit envious because of this setup! I won´t be able to afford such an amazing setup, but if I´d have the money, my dream-setup would be exactly like this! Maybe a MarkIV, instead of the JPC+?😉 Great video, as always! Hope, you´ll have a million subscribers, you deserve that!

      Go Grab a IV Rev A and you'll be in heaven. Don't get the rev B, it has very little to do with rev a. Rev a is basically the IIC+ with a few more options. You can also add Midi functionality for cheap. Jp2c has more gain but beside that, the IV personally kicks more ass. It has a thicker low end directly compared. Jp2c is more like a mark V. So, Grab a IV if they are still going cheap. They will be a collector's soon. Got mine for 1300 bucks 3 years ago.

  • @Nsypski
    @Nsypski 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    John's settings are basically getting it as tight and articulate as possible. I think he uses two amps in stereo to thicken it up also. It's the technical "correct" setting, but it's almost impossible to resist raising that treble knob and saturating it more.

  • @retrocny5625
    @retrocny5625 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Your tone really just sounds like it has more gain going on, due to how the treble affects these mark series amps. Like them both. I can totally see why John's settings work for Dream Theater's tone in a live setting. Just enough saturation for a big sound without losing clarity and staying super tight. A heavy hand or a bit of a push from an overdrive will take it over the top for any section that needs a little more oomph.
    If I was just jamming on this amp in my room, I'd use your settings though. In fact I'd probably push the gain up just a smidge more but I'm a degenerate like that.

If I'm not mistaken you play in a more strait up metal band w/out all the keys & extra Dreamy "stuff" in the mix, if you know what I mean! I can see why you'd be inclined to go this route w/the more "out of control" dare I say fuller sound. Mr. JP has a lot to deal with in his unusual band mix. I dig what you do, the way you do it! Very cool of Mr. JP to try out your settings! No too many people can say that! It def CHUGS! \M/ \M/

    I noticed he uses a lot of mid-range, probably so it cuts through the mix but it sounds really really great it's the right kind of miss (edited: mids) though. Rhythm sounded better at 60watts but leads sound great at the other settings. The background rocks!!!

  • @jsullivan2112
    @jsullivan2112 ปีที่แล้ว

    I gotta be honest, I really lean towards less treble, more mids on the Marks as well, but both sound really great for the application like you said. John's tone during that soundcheck was godlike. Better suited to that house, obviously. Pete Loeffler's sound is dialed in very similar on his Mark IVs and I've always loved that tone he has with Chevelle.
    The thing with the Marks is the higher you put the treble, the less the bass and mids have any affect whatsoever, at least according to the manual. So if you dime the treble you might as well just put mids and bass down to zero anyways. Killer amp, fun video!

I've been using that ribbon model for our recordings lately together with other dynamic and condenser mikes, so this actually sounds super familiar (also a fan of MIIc sound).

    I totally agree with the man when he used your chug settings. Chugging by yourself is totally different when you add a band around you. Hearing this right away I'm surprised you weren't using a noise gate. It would work if you are in a doom-metal band and don't have a bassist. Then distort, bass and scoop to your heart's content. However I have seen him using a mimic pedal to make his rig stereo as well for a 2 guitarist sound.

    IMO the best tones are the unstable ones...I LOVE lots of treble and presence as well because those are the frequencies that make the guitar SCREAM and sound aggressive.

    • @Vincentpadrutt
      @Vincentpadrutt ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, when you play for yourself, it's awesome. But when you play in a band, it's hard to tame, and even harder to stay audible in a busy and extreme music context. That being said, trying to stick to the guitars natural frequencies is a must. Turning down the mids and cranking bass and highs will mostly result in you not hearing yourself. Another thing what I see a lot is, that people play with far too much gain. Sure gain is awesome and all, but at the end of the day, It's very similar to white noise, which just layers itself over every part of the frequency spectrum, making the guitars sound very muddy and not able to punch through the bands sound.

    Shred mode with altered settings is viable for the ultra thrash/downtuned style, too.
    Normally, I play closer to JP's settings, with a bit less 750 than he uses (but still well above the bottom line). Channel 2 is practical for tight rhythms (gain pushed)/heavy rhythms (gain pulled) while Channel 3 is good for solos with the second EQ engaged. When I want the crazy 103db bedroom chugging rhythm sound (not for tracking though), it's Channel 3 with the first EQ engaged, Gain pulled, master around 10:30. It's insane with a 2x12 vert....I would imagine a 4x12 Traditional Straight would just kill everybody in the room straight away.
    The amp really gets better with pushing volumes above 9:30, and just kills at 11:00. Being in another room to save your hearing is a hard requirement at that volume. 9:00 is where it stays most of the time.

    That JP15 sure is nice. I'm tempted but it's pricey!

    I have its brother, the Mark V 90. It's way more amp than I can justify at my playing level but who cares? I love it. I also love my Blue Stripe Mark III which also delivers the IIC+ tone only with even more available gain.

    Ola, you never mentioned the gain and presence settings as both are push/pull. I’ve seen JP experiment with these and changes them from time to time. What are your settings on this vid? Pushed? Pulled? Also shred mode or no? Thanks!
