Am I keeping my GFB DV+? OR time for a Revision G diverter Valve? MK2 Leon 1P1

  • In todays video I'll be revealing whether I am going to be keeping the Go Faster Bits ( GFB ) DV+ Diverter Valve on my Leon Cupra R, or is it time I just bought the well talked about latest revision G diverter valve.
    Before revealing my choice, I'll be going out for a run in the car to discuss how the GFB DV+ has behaved for me over the past 12 months.
    I'm going to remove and inspect the DV+ to see if it's still in good condition, as the inner piston quite often gets reports of sticking and requiring regular maintenance.
    And I'll also be giving a quick run through of the purpose of a Diverter Valve in the engine, and why they're so important.
    NOTE
    The KO3 turbo's will have the Diverter Valve located on the actual housing of the turbo, but all principles in this video will be the same.
    I have the KO4 turbo, hence why my GFB DV+ is located at the front of the engine bay.
    I purchased my GFB Diverter Valve from Awesome GTI, a stockist of GFB parts, link for the 2.0 TFSI/TSI version -

    Great video , glad to see someone is happy with a dv+ 👍Personally I’ve had a dv+ for more than 3 years on my golf Mk6R CDL engine code at stage 2+ and still very happy with it must admit I do remove it for a clean , seal + wear check and lube up every 12 month , just ordered the VTA T9451 as a replacement for 2 main reasons .
    After the stage 2 tune the extra boost pressure causes the stock k04 turbo to surge due to the increased volume of diverted air being dumped upstream of the already maxed k04 compressor .
    Because of the efficiency of the dv+ it diverts the air very quickly and completely, the problem of the surge / flutter is removed with the VTA option with added whoosh at throttle lift off.
    I was planning on ordering new seals springs and piston from GFB after more tha 3 years of operation which are wear items at the end of the day , but went with VTA instead.
    Like you rightly said the revG has finally solved the oem issues and you always have that option.
    Oh and the roads in the North West are shockingly bad ! Had no idea .
    MOT must be expensive on wheels , tyres and suspension with the roads that bad 😵‍💫

      Cheers for taking the time to comment.
      Firstly yes, I'm finding the GFB diverter perfect and it's good to hear another owner singing it's praises too. But what u said about the Ko4 being maxed out makes a lot of sense, so if u get a chance, let me know how you get on with the VTA (I'm always on the look out for upgrades 😁)
      I will be checking mine annually now on an oil change, just to keep an eye on it, but so far so good 🤞🏻
      And yep, roads are falling to bits up here just now. I've cracked an alloy twice over the years sadly. £300 of road tax a year to then spend more on fixing wheels and suspension because of poop roads 🤨
      Cheers again Richard 👍🏻

    • @bradders1303
      @bradders1303 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that's just normal K04 surge. Only way you can eliminate it is buy sticking in a antisurge core.

  • @xvReece
    @xvReece 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That’s explanation was perfect. Nicely done. One thing I’ve noticed is when you’re on boost and you let off the accelerator and then quickly press the accelerator again slightly the DV doesn’t open and you get compressor surge (turbo flutter)

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I get the flutter quite a lot as well, I'm not sure the exact reason behind it. Cars possibly do it a little anyway, but with the DV+ it's more prominent, and if you've an induction kit, you can hear way more.
      How do u find urs for performance day to day?

    • @xvReece
      @xvReece 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NorthCoastWorkshop yeah I think it’s simple that the DV closes again when you slightly touch the throttle so the air gets forced back through the turbo causing the flutter. Yes I have a oversized ram air filter and it’s actually louder than my exhaust lol performance wise it’s faultless, holds boost perfectly and never leaks

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's good to hear. And yeah what u said sounds right for the flutter noise, the DV+'s just are that responsive. Cheers for watching the vid and taking the time to comment Reece👍🏻

      Glad you found the vid useful. I'm afraid I've never looked into their VTA, but if it still recirculates then it should be fine. I don't think it affects things too much, it's more that the engine management might think it's a boost leak, so the EML might light up.

      Hey Nadeem, Cheers for watching 👍🏻 I'm not sure what exhaust systems are available for the diesel Leon's like yours, or if they can use the same systems as the petrols/Cupra's (I've a Cupra R). I think you can purchase a rear diffuser with the centre exit setup on it, then get an exhaust system to match.
      If you aren't already a member, apply to join the "MK2 Seat Leon owners club UK" on Facebook. All the members are really helpful with queries like that, and they'll be able to recommend an exhaust system for your 1.6 TDI 👍🏻 My system is a cobra turbo back system for the Cupra R models only.

    Really great video thanks a lot for the info as well. Looking to get this, have a stage 2 cupra having some boost issues along with pigeon noise so presume it's DV valve as it's never been changed. Dumb question though, just wondered if anyone knows if I'd fit this direct onto the dodgy valve or I'd be better buying revision G and then fitting this 😳

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Jack, appreciate the kind words. The majority of failed diverter valves are down to the diaphragm and plungers components, instead of the large electric solenoid part (that the GFB re-uses). If you are still unsure, yes using reliable parts from the new Rev G would be better for peace of mind.
      2 choices, - get a GFB and re-use the solenoid that's more than likely ok OR great a rev G, fit it and see if it sorts it, and if not use it in combo with the GFB (expensive option tho 🙈)
      Hope that helps Jack 👍🏻

    Would it be beneficial to upgrade the valve and also install a spacer? I was looking at the GFB and also the ecs spacer

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll admit I'm not 100% clued up on the ECS spacer. Though reading into it, it vents excess boost to the air rather than recirculating it back into the turbo, which sometimes causes running issue with tfsi engines.
      Best bet is to try and see someone else with an ECS, and find out what they think of it. I wouldn't say upgrading the piston is required, but if you have the early C revision, the G revision is a worthy and cheaper upgrade Vs the GFB retail price.
      Hope that helps, and let me know how u get on 👍🏻

    I have a DSG Mk6 R with an intake and gfb dv+ attached to rev D diverter, I get some wicked chatter flutter at about 3500 -> under load which I think is from the dv+ actuating on and off, power for sure doesnt feel linear or sound like your tfsi, thoughts?

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah sounds like something is intermittently releasing boost. The solenoid from the revision D diverter valve could be playing up, or something could be hampering the GFB from working properly. Maybe have a double check that the piston is tight in the housing of the GFB, but has just enough slack to smoothly move in and out.
      A smoke test would be my next suggestion, to see if there's any boost leaks, and maybe have someone log the boost (specified Vs actual) as possibly the car is overboosting and the diverter valve is struggling to handle the excessive boost.
      Final one would be to pop a newest revision OEM diverter valve on the car and see what happens.

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not too clued up on the 2.3 ecoboost engines, but can say that if u currently have an aftermarket blow off valve fitted, then this will definitely have less of a venting noise coming from it, as long as it's diverting air back into the engine and not into the atmosphere.
      What do you currently have fitted to your ranger?
      These GFB valves are still heard a little when an aftermarket induction kit is fitted to the engine, along with turbo noises too.

      Ah I see, yes it's a good easy first mod. That's some big plans ahead, nice 👌🏻
      Your original diverter valve may be up to the job of holding extra boost when u get a remap, so maybe look into recommended engine mods for your engine, to see if owners upgrade the DV.
      But yes, if u do decide to get one, you shouldn't hear a dump valve noise, but you will hear more turbo noises if u add an intake.

      Your car may need a map so that the boost is slightly increased and you will most likely need a large open air induction kit to hear the most from the turbo system. These things amplify the noise for the TFSI engines 👍🏻

  • @geo68660

    by installing the DV+ does the dump valve make a louder noise or does it remain the same?

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This DV+ doesn't dump air into the atmosphere like the atmospheric dump valve u can buy, it instead recirculates it back into the turbo, but if you have a large aftermarket intake, you'll hear this and other turbo noises a lot more, so it sounds like a dump valve in some ways.
      Having a car on a remap will also increase boost pressure noises.

      When first put together, the metal piston should be lubricated with a very small amount of fresh engine oil, just applied with ur finger, but after that it should be fine to be left alone (though some owners like to lubricate it annually). The engine isn't designed to lubricate the DV+ piston, the little oil applied at the start of its assembly should be enough.
      Hope that makes sense and helps 👍🏻

      @@NorthCoastWorkshop i see, i checked my dv+ cause i have been losing all the boost pressure, when i took dv electric clip off it was covered with oil, as well i seperated the dv and checked every little thing the hole dv was covered with used motor oil inside, there was a lot off oil, so i quess my dv is broken as it should not to that, can that cause all the boost pressure losing, as i said i cant get any boost at all, turbo is new and shut work correctly (sorry for bad english, hopefully u understood something :)

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the inside of the DV is covered with used engine oil (dark coloured oil) then it sounds like oil is getting into the boost pipes somehow.
      There shouldn't be any oil in those pipes really, you might sometimes get a little in the intercooler pipework.
      I'd recommend taking it to a garage to have them check the turbo itself. If there is oil in the diverter valve pipework, and you've lost boost, it's maybe an oil seal on the turbo that's badly worn and leaking oil into the system 🙁

    Can the oem dv throw out a rich condition code if it leaks.

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop
      @NorthCoastWorkshop  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not as far as I'm aware. It'll tend to be just boost issues the DV will flag up. Rich condition issues will be more likely related to O2 sensors, or the MAF sensor, bad spark plugs, ignition coils, Evap system etc. Hopefully you can trace the issue 🤞🏻

      Hey Matthew. Sorry I'm not sure which part you're meaning exactly, that is missing an O ring.
      The main body of my GFB has it's large dark orange O ring, and I also have the O ring on the end of the small plunger which fits on top of the thin spring.

      Yeah, I've still yet to find out why this GFB unit can be so hit and miss with cars. Half report it as being a worthy upgrade, and half say it's causing issues with their cars.
      And no way of knowing until purchasing and trying it on the car annoyingly. Cheers or the comment 👍🏻

      You can apply oil to the gold part of the piston, but it's not essential. If you do apply any, you should never need to apply any more ever again.

    • @NorthCoastWorkshop

      Not directly from it no, u may be thinking of blow off valves that make a woosh noise directly from them.
      Any noises heard from the engine that sound similar to that, or turbo noises, are heard with an aftermarket air intake, meaning all the air inlet noises are a lot more audible.
