- Got to install the Trask Vented Transmission Cover in order to keep my Milwaukee 8 motor from building up high pressure in the crank case as a result of blow by gasses during combustion. Harley's modern engines have a side efffect during combustion of blow by gasses that escape into the crank case and tend to push oil out trough vent holes into the air intake. A few solutions were found and one of them is venting the crank case through the top of the transmission cover. I installed the Trask cover in this video...

I install that approximately two years ago, it did reduce the amount of blow by approximately 50%. I then install the BA feuling air filter, which than completely stopped all the misty oil going into the Piston heads.
I will also find an Install for my S&S …
I also run the Trask vented cover... I no longer get snot out of the head breathers. It is definitely working well. The only problem I encountered was the excessive amount of thread sealer on the bolts from the factory. A lot of careful cleanup before installing new cover. And of course the pain installing the new bolts. No way to torque bolts on cylinder side. The HD manual says to torque to 110 inch pounds. Hand torquing worked fine. No leaks. A simple job that took several hours. I purchased shorty Allen sockets and they did not work because of non clearance on the cylinder side. Your engine is now happier :-)
Don't forget to add a Feuling sump plug(if you haven't already) to aid in sump oil evacuation. Feuling claims an additional 20% increase in sump oil siphoning, because the factory sump plug protrudes into the oil drain port, partially blocking it.
That works for 17 to 20 models. Since then the sump is improved.. but it doesnt hurt anything.
@@lancmac Are you referring to the updated oil pumps that have increased oil scavenging over their predecessors? I am unaware of any changes to the '21+ M8 cases themselves.
Excellent video, step by step, good instruction, short cuts etc. - as usual. Much better than can be said about other videos on this subject. I broke the bolt with a long arm hex (needed the extra torque from longer lever arm). A small 1/4 inch ratchet with a low profile hex driver makes things a little quicker.
Agree completely. I’m fortunate to live near the Trask Headquarters in Phoenix and when my RGS was in the shop for Kraus T Bars, Nick recommended they install the vented cover. Made a big difference. I would also recommend installing a zip tie where the hose connects as mine came loose a few times.
Thanks I’ll add a zip
Good job! I might have added a zip tie where the filter connects to hose. Also add the fueling sump plug take out Harleys.
Don't listen to anyone, got a Trask vented Transmission cover and Trask Assault High flow air cleaner on a 2020 RGS 114 S&S 475, installed an anodized bolt kit on the engine after 1,000 removed the heads, Pistons are mirrors after 20,000.
Wow ! Great to hear that buddy!
Harley's new seal in the M8's built mid 2019 and newer, maintains a more consistent pressure in the crankcase and keeps the oil pump primed. It better isolates the crankcase from the cam chest. The pressure is bleed off the crankcase into the camchest and blah blah blah from there. Long story short, if I were to vent anything, and I do, it would be the heads with an external breather system into a catch can or similar. If you're worried about warranty, better to get one through a company like Motorcycle Agent which covers you even with additions to your bike which Harley would consider a void in warranty.
You were talking about two different things. Venting the oil mist vaper from the engine crankcase is separate from venting the transmission. The M8 tends to transfer transmission oil into the primary cover. Older Harleys used to ent the crankcase to atmosphere until the EPA made them vent to the combustion chamber.
The early M8s were having an issue with tranny oil being transferred into the primary case, the primary cause of this was because of unequal atmospheric pressures in both the trans and primary cases, when the clutch was activated (especially on the hydraulic clutches), the sudden unequal pressure would cause the trans oil to be transferred via the clutch pushrod port to the primary case, Harley has since added additional venting.
This was only a problem on baggers with hydro clutches, this did not happen on Softails or the new Baggers with cable clutches.
This is what confuses people....they hear "transmission cover" and immediately wonder how that vents the engine. If you take the trans cover off you will see 3 cavities and one of those cavities under that trans cover leads to the engine crankcase.
@@hughjanus590 you are correct. I checked the service manual and sure enough it says oil circulates through the transmission case. I asked a tech in the service department and he did not know that either. But either way the the oil is separate between the motor and transmission. I vented the crankcase at the rocker boxes. Now I have ordered an oversized clutch push rod and a primary cover vent kit to take care of my oil transfer problem.
Swivel (universal) sockets and wobbly extensions make the job a breeze. I put a short piece of 3/16' allen in a 1/4" drive 3/16' swivel socket on a wobbly extension.
Good editing, didn't look or sound like a home video.
Icon locking flex head & Ratchet bit set at harbor freight part # RXFT-35
Worked nicely!
Brother I think you need your filter down sooozz your oil will run down . PS you’re my favor TH-cam pilot you do know how gravity works 😂
Apparently the 2024 touring models have a vented transmission cover that will also work on earlier models.
Good video. Good job
Thank you for the info
Great tutorial video Sir. Question, i have ac ventilation kit completed and now i am thinking about doing trask checkmate trans cover to add. Do you see n feel different before n after with ghis trans cover upgrade?
Don’t feel ! But I absolutely see no oil is being sucked into the combustion process
sandy, where did you buy your s&s air cleaner. model ? thx brah. big island
Yup did the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you feel anything different?
Less vibration? Was throttle response smoother ?
No .. I don’t feel anything different
Nice mandals🤣🤪🤙🏼 you jersey people killll me lmao I had to🤪🤙🏼
May I ask what did you do for additional cooling for your performance build?
Love jugs .
How many exhausts have you had on grey goose?
Tab slipons, Sawicki, now Basani . Done 😀
You could just buy a HD trans top cover for a 23 CVO 121 VVT...... But Trask is good.... Also you could use a 3/8 bulkhead fitting in your stock cover and install a power break check valve in the vent line... Options here
Is there a service bulletin for that repair?
No
Long ball end socket
Very nice….but. Isnt the stock one vented?
No - although there is that small hose coming out and I’m not sure what it does ….
that vents the transmission not the crankcase
No hose clamp on the filter?🤔
No. Very tight fit. Going nowhere
Did you have alot of oil coming out of your external breathers?if you don't you dont need this product.

Would a crows foot work?
Don’t think so
Hi 👋, H-S , you’ve done a great job, but this is where size does matter, 😂 , obviously your fingers are too big,😂 , to get hold of your bolts properly, 😂, only time will tell if you have weather or not it works, in and out, or vacuum out, A bike on the horizon, ? ? ? Is it for your daughter or wife. ? I’ll bet she’ll be very pleased with that., stay safe, Phil from the moulin
How much horse power did that add?
43 HP 😂🤣LoL 🤪😂
@@HOLYSHIFT lol you’ll be able to take John now you’re probably pushing more HP then him.
What about all the m8's running around out there that don't have any problems ?
I don’t know ! I only showed what I did !
That’s not the last resort it’s the first thing you should do
Use Seafoam
Did you have to pull the exhaust? Some very knowledgeable guy sad the rear pipe was in the way. It seems everyone is removing the cover from the left side, like you. Have a '23 LRS. On a 25k bike, you still have to spend another grand so it breathes properly. What does Indian do on their 116? Same BS?
“Give & Take “ : Whenever I see a question ? ? In the comments I like to see if the person asking the question thinks it’s fair to also subscribe to my channel first …👍🏻😜
Regarding CC vacuum on the M8s - That is a unproven theory.. No evidence has ever been produced or documented that this is a factor. It is a theory advanced by folks that were grasping at straws with sumping issues on the older
M8s that were the result of the less than adequate oil pump and oversized sump plug on the early M8's. ! Venting the CC will reduce pressure and blow by as stated by trask in the product description but still does not solve the issue of hot oily air going into the intake and combustion chamber EBS is the best solution for the bike and definitely get a sump plug from fueling as to not worry if you bike ends up have sumping issues.
I bought a $20 stubby 1/4 ratchet that holds bits. Sooo much easier than trying to go at this with just Allen wrenches. I wouldn’t recommend the tools he used in this video. Took me only an hour with a ratchet.
Great suggestion- thanks 🙏🏻
Honda give you a bike to review?
My wallet did …😂
Harley should recall the bikes and fix them but probably to much to ask they built that they should fix it
If that's a Goldwing I'm unsubscribing
😂
I don’t get it. The stock one looks exactly the same? Its vented like the oem. I can’t figure it out why spend 300$+ on this
Stock cover only vents trans
Your new nickname is smelly fingers
I chrome unit for sale in original box if anyone is interested
I don't have an M8 but one day I may, was that an Indian in the background? It'll be between us .
Check my instagram channel to find out 😂
@@HOLYSHIFTI don't have instagram.
I’m not sure you needed to do that as Harley vented the transmission from the factory when they knew there was a problem.
$350 is just stupid. Buy a $30 vented oil stick!
Got to work on your pull out game 😂😅
Like dad told me
That's what she said lol !
Stubby Allen wrench with a stubby ratchet wrench would have been your best friend. Cut the Allen wrench short then use the 3/16 stubby ratchet wrench
Great idea
