How we get HOT Showers on the Road - Simple DIY System for Campers

  • DIY hot shower system for any car, using the heat of the engine.
    We don't have a lot of space in our Land Rover Defender so adding a boiler was not really an option. instead we installed a heat exchanger, connected to our engine coolant circuit to warm water after a days drive.
    We are able to harvest the heat from the engine and shower more than three people with steaming hot water.

      I guess the cabin heater has to be set at "open", ie "hot" for your system to work - so that the hot engine coolant circulates through the cabin heater...? Also, am I right that if you develop a leak in your hot water system and your cabin heater is set at "cold", ie closed, you would loose much engine coolant. So it's a brassica safety mechanism?

      Really worth the work and money, in the future I want to find a solution to not connect everything in the engine bay to not open the bonnet all the time, always something to do 😂

    Hello, I just had to say how how much I enjoy watching your youtube show. I go on desert expaditions with Popski's private expadtions. As such I'm always looking for better ways to prepare my TD5 110 2004 Station Wagon for the heat of the desert and a re-mapped ECU. Your heat exchanger is exactly what I need to keep the engine tempiture down, while struggling with soft sand dunes and altitude. Such as the Atlas Mountains later this year. I would need a more basic version than yours, with the sole purpous of cooling the engine, Can you help me design one please?
    I also like that you cover all your maintainance issues, most similar youtubers don't show this kind of content. Your tool selection video was the best I've seen and highly recomended it to people interested in buying a Defender for expaditions. Keep up the amazing work!

      Hey Tony, sorry for the late replay. I’m surprised you feel the need of more cooling. I don’t have much experience with chipped defenders yet, but doesn’t matter what we do our engine always stayed cool. Even in Iran with over 50 degrees during the day.
      If you really need it you could use the heat exchanger get a electric coolant pump and a second radiator. Connect it all to a second cooling circuit.
      In my car I’m way more concerned with gearbox and transfer case temperatures than with engine temperature. That’s why we added a transmission cooler. This is more for highway driving but still an important part. If you need More information you can reach out to us via email: Contact.thebluelandy@gmail.com

    Nice and simple ! Any issues in freezing temperatures with shower water trapped in the exchanger ?

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hay Antoine, so far no. Normally the water evaporates while driving. I can believe it could be freezing if you shower and then the water freezes overnight. Didn’t ran into that yet

    Clever system. Is it also connected to the hose carrying coolant from the radiator which flows to the vehicle's heater?

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Michael, the heat exchanger is in series (after) the cabin heater. In TD5 Coolent flows from engine to the thermostat (if open) to the radiator, (if closed) to cabin heater, fuel cooler, shower heat exchanger, and back in to the engine

    Thanks for sharing your system. Which heat exchanger did you use? The amazon link gave a number of different exchangers. Was it a 10, 20, 30, or 40 plate exchanger?

      Hey, sorry for the confusion, we’ll try to fix that the next days.
      We have the 20 plate version.

    This is great practical engineering! How about the pump? Is there a pass through valve or what happens when the engine pumps is being driven by engine?

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, I believe the pump is just spinning driven by the engine. Sometimes I use it in combination with the heater to boost the flow and heat up the cabin faster.
      I having the heat exchanger and the pump in series of the heater causes a bit higher resistance in the small coolant circle. If that is a concern you could start the pump with ignition…

    • @islandworks
      @islandworks 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Thebluelandy it could be done with two simple check valves and putting it in series with the other water line. Then you make sure there is no issue with the pump seizing or anything else.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Frank, sorry for the bad Link.
      It’s a plate heat exchanger with 20 plates. It’s made of stainless steel and is rated for up to 20 bar.
      Search for: “stainless steel heat exchanger 20 plates” I got good results. If not let me know.

  • @lougreeff

    very interesting, would be great if you could convert all that heat energy from the engine into electricity and store it in battery's.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have to admit if we find a way to turn this low temperature heat into useful engine, eg electricity. We would be able to cover most of humanity’s power needs. This is why this low temperature heat flow (eg. From power plants, or engines is only used for heating.
