  • Quickly shot, poorly edited and narrated video of a couple of recent installs. Only the finest from me! :)
Both of the models use similar techniques and components but are also slightly different.
Kato F7a- Frame machined (actually just swapped from one I had in my pool of frames...the original will get machined the next time I set up to do F unit frames).
When components were being swapped over, the DCC decoder was removed, and components were cleaned and lubricated as they were reassembled. a 'factory' light board was modified and installed.
The stock 3mm LED was replaced with 2 0402 warm white LEDs that were heat shrunk to the separated front light pipe.
ESU 58823 V5 micro decoder was installed along with an ESU 11x17 sugar cube speaker with short baffle. S0711 sound file loaded and mars light set to aux1 (green) output. Everything reassembled, missing front coupler replaced, tested, etc.
Kato N scale E5A- Frame machined (well, just swapped like the above one. I generally machine frames in batches and pull from a pool of spares as necessary).
As components were swapped over, mechanism was cleaned and lubricated. DCC board was replaced with a modified stock light board. Separate mars light headlight were set up utilizing scrap surface mount resistors from other light boards, wired in and heat shrunk to the separated light pipes.
ESU 58823 V5 micro decoder was installed along with an ESU 11x17 sugar cube speaker with tall baffle. S0761 sound file loaded and mars light set to aux1 (green) output. Everything reassembled, tested, etc. The middle steps were broken off prior to me receiving the model, so there's not much I can do on that part.
There are stills of other installs over on my Facebook page.

Just a quick shout out to followers of Kelley at Duford Model Works. He installed DCC LokSound in my two units featured in this video and I couldn't be happier with the results. He did the work perfectly, quickly and at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend Kelley for anyone wanting to upgrade their locomotives with sound. Kelley was very helpful and replied quickly to my inquiry about doing upgrades to my locomotives. He answered all my questions and provided a very reasonable price listing for his services. I didn't use Duford Model Works because I couldn't do it myself, I did it because I didn't want to do it myself. Unless you can do it yourself, I don't think you can find anyone else to do quality DCC or Sound upgrades for a better price. I plan on having Kelley upgrade some of my other locomotives in the near future. Also, any of my future locomotive purchases will be for DCC ready locomotives and I'll pay Kelly to install DCC with sound. Thanks again Kelley.
