Kato N scale Kobo MP36 Caltrain ESU LokSound install
It's been a minute since I've posted a new video, but the rumors are false! I am still alive, so continuing with my horribly shot, terribly narriated, and poorly edited video series, I present the following:
A quick walkthrough of installing ESU LokSound in a Kato N scale Kobo MP36PH locomotive along with proof of life.
The basic rundown is this is a Kato Kobo Customs (Mr Saito modeled and painted) Caltrain MP36PH locomotive that I installed ESU Loksound along with advanced lighting in. Decoder is an ESU V5 58741 decoder that was rotated, 11x17 speaker and 3d printed housing. Seperated out ditch lights, red marker lights, seperate headlight.
The install itself was pretty straight forward except for the mars light being painted on the model. I drilled that out and used clear window cement and an 0402 SMLED. As I went to wire that, I planned on using Aux6...turns out this is a logic output and not actually usable as a powered output. So rear light was sacrificed. Sound file S0847 was loaded and function mapped, unit tested and tweaked, etc.
If you have additional questions, feel free to shoot me a message over on facebook: dufordmodelworks
or email me at: kelley@dufordmodelworks.com
As always, I hope you learned something. If not, I hope you were at least entertained! Thanks for watching!

Caltrain MP36s don't have mars lights; they have a train number board instead which doesn't oscillate. There is an alternate Nathan P2 in the horn pack that suits the engine
welp...I guess it's a lit train numberboard now. Easy enough to address. CV163 is now 2 for the P2. Thanks!
Hey Kelley, nice to see you back at it. Another nice install. I pretty much did all the same work on an Athearn N scale MP36 about a year ago, but the GO Transit locos didn’t have mars lamps so I was able to use that powered AUX output for a rear 0402 LED. Just wondering if- could you maybe have wired the rear LED in conjunction with the twin red LED’s, such that all 3 would illuminate when in reverse? I know that forward voltage differences between red & white LED’s can be problematic, but it’s a thought.
I could have done that (put the rear LED and LED that lights the red marker lights) on one function, but the problem then becomes that the rear light would be on when the loco is in push mode. Honestly, I'd be suprised if the rear light would ever be used once this thing has a few commuter cars hooked up behind it. Side note, the LED powering the red marker lights is white also...the light pipe itself is tinted red.
@ Ah, yes … didn’t think about the push mode issue. Agreed - scrapping the reversing rear headlamp is no biggie!
Also getting ESU super thin #36 wire in several colors
The decoder I am getting is the ESU loksound 58941 with the SO516 UP 4-8-8-4 big boy sound file
The speaker used is the ESU 50340 dual sugar cube with sound baffle enclosure
Love the channel. One of the fellers at the club tuned me into your stuff. I'm hoping you can help me. I'm trying to do my first decoder install with lighting on a Kato SD70ACe with the Loksound 5 5874. Headlight, rearlight, ditch lights, and number boards and maybe a cab light if possible. I have read to understand that resistors are needed for aux 3,4,5 and 6. Is this correct, and what would you (if willing, of course) recommend i use to be succesful. I'm newer to the hobby and just trying to learn what I can to be succesful and confident without wasting money through failure as much as possible. I am planning to use aux1 for F0, aux 2 R0 (led's that come with decoder. The other lighting I'm planning on using 0402 smd led. Any help and infonis greatly appreciated. Hope i was clear enough. Thank you in advance. Take cqre!
for aux3, 4, 5, and 6 use a 4700 ohm (4.7k) surface mount resistor on a scrap of PCB for each 0402 wired SMLED. You can find these on Ebay pretty cheap. I bought a roll of 2000 years ago...I doubt I'll ever run out. It's acutally pretty simple. aux1 and aux2 don't need dropping resistors as they are set up for LED's so you are correct there. Just keep polarity in mind and be mindful of how small the solder pads are.
@nightmare0331 thank you very much! Cheers!
This brings back LOTS of memories, I lived in Arlington Heights and I remember these in the 60's and 70's as a kid. I would love to get back into trains with this exact set up. Do you need a special power pack to get the sound from these trains ? Thanks!
Merci cordialement, Johan.

Thanks for sharing. Also i have to do mine. I want to ad red light flickering on boiler as fire. I mount it on two FEF-3. Was more easy since are accepting the same decoder card used in SD70ACe and another narrow locomotives. That setting allow just wire for spkr and reverse light from loco to tender. Loksound V5 being a nice decoder, have a lot of aux function. On FEF i add also red Mars light fwd 😂😂😂
thats a sweet train :)
Very cool looks like I have to look for one 066 car add-on set
Almost like an old Concor, but with two motors. Thanks for the insight and now I know where to start if I ever buy one.
I like how you used just one dropping resistor for the U+. Is that because only one strobe led is on at a time?
@blayzslayr87-221 there are two surface mount resistors on a scrap piece of PCB. Each 4700 ohm and connected to the red (+) then both tied into a single (+) blue wire back to the decoder
Screaming like a screamer does. Love the F40ph! Nice work with the strobes!
I love the "craptastic" videos!
That looks better than I thought it would. I did the beacon on my metra and I was considering doing the strobes on my VRE, but I opted to just do the emergency light on that model. I have digitrax and TCS in those two models so I'm a bit limited on lighting outputs and normally I do Soundtraxx for sound engines since I like the Dynamic Exhaust feature.
Where did you get the plastic strobes at
They come with the model.
When you mentioned about starting on your "Full size cabinet", my wife turned her head and asked, "Is that you [me]?" I have two full size cabinets in storage. Finished the cabaret two weeks ago.
I bought a kato big boy with the tsunami 2 and they seem to have cheaped out on the backup light. Would this be as simple as connecting the LED to the yellow wires for the rear light? Installation looks a bit of a mess on the dcc sound version. The terminal connections on the pins look like they have wires exposed. I guess this may make it easier to replace the decoder since all the connections on the engine side are 50/59 done right lol
Why did not use all auxiliar light to make a nice locomotive. ESU have 5 Aux port, you can cut light guide, put smd led and like this will have alternating ditch light, red light fwd and reverse. You waste a good decoder, multifunctional for 3 lights.
I actually offer that as a service (ditch light left, right and marker lights) Thanks for letting me know I don't know what I'm doing.
Nicely done.
How do this fit in the F3s?
Can I buy a few of those enclosures for the speaker? I’m currently doing the same conversion, just bought the Alc-42 and superliner set at the Rocky Mountain train show,
Hey Kelley. You gave me a lot of great newbie soldering advice on fb and advice for installing loksound into my AC12 this week. You also converted my greyhound challenger a year ago to esu that I sent into you. This is a great vid! I just got a kato SP daylight e8 off ebay pretty cheap that arrived today. Was just going to do a cheap dcc decoder but decided I'd spend the extra money and throw in a loksound (also for soldering practice before doing my AC12). Thankfully I saw this video first because I was going to mill the frame with everything together (now I realize it's a dumb thing to do). Doh! You've been a real life saver this week! I feel like I should be throwing money at you for the money you've probably saved me haha. Thanks for everything!
Well poo wish I had researched this before buying the dc version that eBay seller said was dcc ready…..
Do I need install 2 EM13 type decorder in 2 motor cars ?
Hey are u the guy who makes locomotives and sends them to Lombard hobby’s or no
Are you?
@@joebalderas2672no
Should have saved all those shaving and sent them to the customer to send to the last guy that did the install to see what they left behind.
Good work!!
Absolutely amazing! Thanks for sharing all the parts and the file name!
Hello, would you know of a dcc decoder that will allow me to add classification lights to the tender and a red safety light(as I saw it done on a lionel loco) in N scale.
I can’t for the life of me find an SDP40F file from ESU that works with this board
ESU v5 file S0765. You will have to function map the lighting correctly and reverse direction since the 58741 is orientated backwards in the SDP40F model
@@nightmare0331 Thank you!
If only I could figure out wiring and stop blowing up ESU decoders
Kelley - nice precise work on the install. Thanks for posting the video! BTW - Thanks again for the excellent work you've done for me in the past installing sound in my Alaska RR Kato SD70's and E8/9's. They turned out great.
I had a decoder installed on a Kato Big boy, and now the independent engines lost part of their initial mobility. Unfortunately the locomotive can no longer take 11 inch radius turns. Does anyone know how this could be remedied? Thank you.
no idea as I didn't do the install, but I'm guessing on the 11" radius issue is due to not enough slack with the wiring connecting the motors to the frame not allowing the truckst to properly articulate or there isn't enough slack with wiring between the loco and tender.
What gauge wire would you recommend running for the drive motors? I keep reading where others have articulation issues and trouble fitting the shell back on
ESU 36 gauge super thin wire works well. I've used it on around a dozen Big Boy installs now. Works well. Make sure as the Loco is getting buttoned up you left enough slack for the Loco to articulate and for the tender to swivel.
I believe this is the problem I’m having
Locsound, don't have a horn cv? The GS4 has an air horn!
15 minutes is long? That's not long. I've seen fix it videos lasting up to over 1 hour! Now that long! 😊
I have a locomotive with the same decoder installed. Everything is hooked up, right, but it says short circuit.
Awesome video! I am waiting for an N Scale Caltrain MP36PH to show up online so I can try to get it
Nice video sorry for your troubles but I'm going to wait for Broadway Limited Imports Challeger not sure of the release date.
I Never Thought C&Nw Had Those At All.Nice!
I would be very interested in seeing more of the work under the shell. I do some installs for myself at home, and I’m always looking for different ways to solve the issues we run into. Thanks for doing these videos in any case!
She tiny and beautiful.
Greetings from Jacksonville, Florida I just got the Kato DC version and I wanted the DCC/ sound version but weren't available. Do you know of anyone who can install the DCC and sound in my DC Big Boy?
Quand tell us who much do you paid for the loco? Thanks and great video!!
It is a beautiful engine and tender but what big Boy isn't lol Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
