I have been taking Saw Palmetto, stinging nettle, and, biotin for years. I had a small bald spot developing in the back of head and growing widows peak in front. My bald spot is gone and widows peak isn't as prominent. It took awhile to work. It does work.
I had reached the point of having to wake up and urinate around 4 times every night. Upon watching health videos by another fellow, whose focus is on correcting insulin resistance (and is big on a healthy version of keto), I decided to try reducing as much as possible all sugars, grains, and starches. Just 3 nights later, I slept the whole night through, and have continued to do so. Also, unexpectedly, 3 weeks later, symptoms of ED remarkably reduced. After about 3 months, most of my fat has disappeared. And other ailments seem to be improving as well. I'm rather excited to see if other things improve too.
what kind of replacements you do? less proceseed more better you will be, less inflammation, im struggling with protein, and get really hungry. when im been full on it
I have not actually done replacements. I don't think I have felt hunger more often. I might be eating more of the things that I don't avoid. But I'm no longer avoiding fatty meats. And I do not often go for lean meats anymore. That might make some difference.
@@flash522gp, first, even when I was young, I saw the obvious flaw in the argument that fat that is solid at room temperature clogs your arteries. If your arteries are at room temperature, you have MUCH bigger problems than hardening arteries. Second, I found out that the studies were intentionally skewed which concluded that saturated fats are bad for you. Those who funded those studies were pushing seed oils, which truly are bad for you. And information is accumulating that fat is your friend, especially saturated fats, like in meats. Eating fat does not cause fat in your body. But it does provide good energy. I used to avoid fatty meats, but no longer. By the way, I am now back down to my very skinny high school weight, back when I was a bean pole. My mom and brother both think I'm too skinny. But they're both overweight. And I've never felt better. My fat has melted away and stayed away.
@Rafael Shumaker Many thanks for the reply, my friend!! Your progress inspires me... I've been eating Chomps (a brand of grass-fed beef stick) and NOT avoiding animal fats, as well as eating more green vegetables, dropped 30 lbs, and am the slimmest I've been in about 30 years (not quite as skinny as when I did High School sports year-round, but nowhere near overweight!). Still eating my share of simple carbs, though, but after reading your comments (& I'm pretty sure I saw the same video with the doctor recommending cutting out the simple carbs and late evening snacks, and doing keto, Etc.), I'm working on further improving my diet in order to get over the prostate issues, Etc...Any other suggestions?
I just took my vitamins after 4 week hiatus. Do you know why ? You probably do. Because of the video you made. Thank you Dr. Rachael Ross. Your the first female doctor I've turned to for my male health. That's cool.

i started taking saw palmetto and i suddenly developed gynocomastia , but not just chest fat, actual painful lumps under my nipples . I still have them . I asked my doctor and the only thing he said was that they could cut the lumps out! Surely understanding the problem and treating it is better than cutting me up!

@charles ezzell Yes you can ingest the oil. I buy my oil from Sprouts foods. It's a small 8.5 Oz bottle from Ellyndale Farms Virgin pumpkin seed oil. I take 2 teaspoons on empty stomach in the morning. The bottle will last about 4-5 weeks and cost roughly 10.00
For hair loss pumpkin seeds and rosemary oil(put 4drops in shampoo and leave it on for 10 to 15mins while u have ur shower) seemed to work for me so i'd give that a try too :)
@@reginaldbarnor1537Pumpkin seeds are for eating so I'm sure powder would be ok. U don't need much. Just a small handful of p.seeds a day. My partner bought rosemary oil from an essential oil seller so I just used that. Some people put 4 drops in a tablespoon or 2 of a "carrier oil" and massage that through the hair and scalp. But I found that messy. Others said u can put the drops in each handful of plain shampoo(any will do) and mix it around in the hand before lathering it through. And then leaving it on for 10 to 15mins while u have a shower before rinsing it off. Like anything takes a few weeks to work. Don't know if it will work for everyone but won't hurt giving it a try. I have been taking Finasteride 5mg for BPH and hair loss, for the last year and half. Yes there is the side effect of decreased libido, but with TRT therapy it solves the libido issue. My hair growth results are great! Due to the BPH issue my health care provider covers the Finasteride cost.
Didn't hear you mention zinc, but apparently Russian men have a low rate of enlarged prostate because they have traditionally eaten large amounts of pumpkin seeds (pepitas), which contain large amounts of zinc. The thing about zinc, though, is that you have to take an ionophore like quercetin to get zinc past the lipid barrier and into the cell.
Just wanted to say that you are a traditional woman that men do not see or hear such a beautiful woman any more with so much intelligence and well spoken words to encourage us all I would like to continue to support your work and channel but there not a thank you selection to do so thank you for your time and your confidence smile
Saw palmetto contains some beta-sitosterol but also comes with additional plant-based compounds. The primary difference here is the potency. When you want natural supplements for prostate health that are more potent, then opting for a formula that primarily uses beta-sitosterol is usually the better choice
There's another doctor that says new studies show that "Insulin" sensitivity is the key component to BPH ! Supposedly every time we eat carbs or sugar our pancreas tries to deal with it with insulin and the prostate is enlarged from too much insulin in our systems.. even sugar substitutes trigger an insulin response.. Type 2 diabetes is a key factor as well because of the lack of insulin sensitivity the pancreas over produces it and that causes numerous problems in the body !
Just confirming to anyone out there who has a problem, saw palmetto combo'd with stinging nettle root does stop hair loss 100% , ive had blood tests done before and after, it has been 3 years now and 0 recession, everything has remained normal, and i feel good.
@sehzadelee I think as long as you dont have any serious stomach issues youre good to go, i tend to combine both i pour the saw palmetto capsule into the tea but thats just me, i used to use them at separate times of the day, just be consistent and ur dht will drop, once it does u can take it even once every 3 days, doesnt have to be every day
in the prostate, testosterone if converted to estrogen which causes prostate swelling. i had a swallen postate especially after the maid always neglected making salad when cooking for me. I fixed my enlarged prostate by eating salad daily, and sun flower seeds for 6 months, at that stage i stopped using Alphaszine and not i may go to the bathroom once a night, and some nights not at despite not taking medication, before i learned how to improve it, i used to go to the bathroom 10 times a night...
Hi Dr. Ive been taking saw palmetto with pumpkin seed and some other herbs for months and also have been using a shampoo that also supposed to block DHT. Im noticing growth of hair in certain areas where it was growing noticably thin. Even stylist has seen that too. That shampoo also has some saw palmetto in it too. Anyway happy to be seeing improvement.
Try adding micro needling that can be a game changer if you have already thinning hair coming out, i had big spots in my beard and started micro needling and it was gone
For me Saw Palmetto elevated my blood pressure and triggered/expedited my baldness. I started taking Saw Palmetto at age 20 for Chronic Prostatitis. I had a full head of hair.
i've noticed much more effect from pumpkin seeds...actually eden organic roasted/salted pumpkin seeks. i still take saw palmetto, but when i truly notice a difference in needing to go to the bathroom each night is when i take the pumpkin seeds...when i forget or lapse, i need to go much more often. takes about 3 days for taking or increasing pumpkin seeds to work, but it is very noticeable. thanks.
I don't think people realise how devastating hair loss is to a man's self esteem and self image. It's seen in society as "stop moaning about it and just get on with it".
It really depends how you look bald. For one, it doesn't work great if you're not of the slightly more masculine phenotype. You also need to have a nicely shaped head to get away with it well. I always thought I'd be devastated if I lost mine when I was younger. My grandfather, father and full brother all were bald. My full brother (2 years older) lost his almost complete horseshoe by about 22! I have a much older half brother (16 years my senior) that still hasn't lost his and is about to turn 60. I was hoping that I was going to follow in his footsteps, but not long after 30 I started seeing the outline. By the time it was thin enough to say screw it, that it will look better shaved, I really quit caring. The look works for me, and I honestly love most of the other parts about not having hair (e.g., feels better, stays cooler, easy to wash and dry, no need to style). Unfortunately, I still have to shave it every other day of so to keep it looking good. I also go without facial hair. It kind of depends on what you're working with, though. I'm 6'4", 220lbs German and Italian, and decently muscular even though I'm extremely limited on exercise/gym time. Before you get worried, though, assess what you've got and also know that the older you get the less you're really going to give a f♡(
These days, it's much more acceptable to shave your head, and hopefully rock a great chromedome. But imagine turning 19 years old in 1971, and you are already beginning to noticeably lose your hair, within a popular culture where having a full head of hair is absolutely EVERYTHING. It very definitely changes the course of your entire life, as it begins to erode your self-confidence and your self-image. I mean, at the risk of sounding selfish & shallow, it's like, in one fell swoop, your dating options and choice of women are drastically diminished, in that, you can no longer marry someone who is on the same level of physical attractiveness as you(unless you're rich), so you are essentially forced to do all of your shopping for dates in the discount stores, if you catch my drift. That's not to say that you can't discover true love with a relatively unattractive person, but it does cause one to wonder what that alternate reality would have been like, had you never lost any of your hair.
@@drrachael Dear Dr Ross, a big thank you for your YT clips. I particularly like your approach of not being purely conventional medicine based. So glad you covered this topic of genetic anagen alopecia Dr Rachel. The problem is that compared to finasteride (or off label dutasteride which blocks both 5AR enzymes 1 and 2), Saw Palmetto is far less potent as a 5ari inhibitor. Saw Palmetto has been around for a very long time. In clinical trials finasteride's side effects have been shown to be close to placebo. Unfortunately regardless of the low incidence of side effects of 1mg per day of finsteride, the side effects for those who have them are real. Topical finasteride has shown to produce far less side effects as it is far less systemic (though not totally) when applied to the scalp. No harm in trying Saw Palmetto but compared to the drugs we have today for MPB it has no comparison to 1mg finsteride a day. Thanks for sharing!
Agreed. I have tried saw palmetto with no good results. I have had excellent results with 1 mg of finasteride pill along with Rogaine. I am 61 and have more hair now than I did in my late 20's. One way to save money on finasteride is to have your doctor prescribe them in 5 mg pills and cut them with a pill splitter. That way I am only spending about $3 per month. I have also been very fortunate to not have had any of the side effects from finasteride she mentioned.

Pygeum, prunus africanus works better than Saw Palmetto on the prostrate. Its price kept going up because it was wild harvested and getting rarer. They couldn't get it to grow from seeds and plant groves of trees. The price is coming down now because they found trees could be grown from cuttings and hopefully they get cuttings from the best trees.
I am soooo glad you mentioned post-finasteride syndrome..had it back in 2017..only took proscar for 2 months but side effects lasted 4 years! Lost some height as my bones were affected as well. So blocking dht via finasteride was disastrous.
AGREE! I took two doses of the generic and had SERIOUS side effects. Mine were shallow breathing, rapid heart beat and sweating. Almost heart attack like symptoms. After the second dose it happened again and called the doc. They said it was me and not the drug to get to the ER. I am a super healthy 55 yr old. I know my body and decided to wait. After the second dose - EXACT symptoms again - I knew it was the drug. Called a phama and they gave me the side effects list. What I was experiencing was one on the list. Now I have slight ED since taking this garbage. It must have caused some damage. Most doctor's don't even know the meds they prescribe. I use the holistic approach for everything now.

Men have hairy chests and beards and some think it's too much testosterone but it's often a blocking of testosterone or other factors. It helps to use a sports massager on the head along with topical zinc copper + A mixed with aloe vera + magnesium oil + eat collagen and glycine and use hair stamp needling 1 a week

I actually tried the green berries from a California Palm, and the green husk around the berry also has an aphrodisiac effect on me. The green herb always has more effect than the heat dried version. So green Saw Palmetto freeze-dried or made into a tincture will have a greater effect.

Dr. Ross, it's been a while since I first contacted you. I never completed my discussion with you. You were so kind and encouraging. Well, I never had male pattern baldness. My hair just began to thin out. It didn't recede above the temples and the back of the scalp as in traditional male pattern baldness. It just started thinning out. I say that I have my Uncle Vic's (my mother's younger brother's) hairline. I know of no other relatives on my mother's side who went bald. On my father's side they all had the same amount of hair since their early 20s. My older brother still has a pretty good head of hair. I had a beautiful head of hair until I went into the Navy. I blame them and have been trying to get dermatology at the VA to give me a hair transplant --- after all, I blame them for the hair loss. If it wasn't for all those shot they made take when i got my first assignment 'cause I can't blame anyone else. (BTW hated the Navy 👿). Believe me, I've been taking saw palmetto for years and it hasn't done much at all --- except keep my prostate within limits. It doesn't seem to have done anything to prevent DHT. Recently, I've noticed my hair has thinned out even more so much so that I have problems trying to cover it and I've gotten into buying hats and looking for new ones. I do have one thing many men may be interested in. I have been taking Fo-Ti Tieng (He Shu Wu) for quite a few years. I've been asked many times if I color my hair. No, I do not. It is rather difficult to find much for gray hair on my head --- a bald crown, yes. But gray hair, not much. 😁
Can anti androgen such as finasteride cause chest discomfort and fatigue? Whenever I try low dose finasteride I always get chest discomfort. No, it's not gyno, I'm referring to my heart. Same happens if I try any anti androgen. Today I applied single nettle to my scalp and hours later my chest starts hurting and I look on the Mirror amd it looks like I haven't slept in a few days...anyone?
I had a negative reaction to opiates....alprazolam prescribed by my doctor as a sleep aid. I only took a quarter of a pill nightly and after the 3rd night I felt pressure in my bladder plus the several times a night urge for urination and I figured out it's an enlarged prostate. I started taking chelated zink and that shrunk it in a week, then I added saw palmetto. They keep the old prostate in check.

I would appreciate adding your advise regarding the recommend doses of saw palmetto and zinc for prostate hyperplasia. Thanking you in advance, and may God bless you.
The reality is about 20% of finasteride users experience side effects. The difference between saw palmetto and finasteride is 1mg finasteride blocks about 70% of DHT while saw palmetto about 1/10 the efficacy. Saw palmetto is a good option if you have symptoms from finasteride though

Some say cortisol from stress causes a conversion of testosterone to estrogen, causing growth of prostate. Is that true? Also I got a recipe from Dr Eric Berg to eat a smoothie of whole lemon including the peel (organic preferably) and a cup of frozen blueberries. The lemon has something that reduces aromatase which converts testosterone to estrogen, causing the prostate to swell. I've been doing this for a couple months and 1. It is really good tasting. 2. I seems to be opening up the flow, I add mango and other frozen fruits also, some ground flaxseed too which lowers PSA. You can add other things too if you want.
Warning: Saw Palmetto shouldn't be used if you are on Blood Thinners. I only watched half this video so maybe this was mentioned later on but if it is not she should have mentioned this!

what is the best brand for saw palmetto
I have been taking Saw Palmetto, stinging nettle, and, biotin for years. I had a small bald spot developing in the back of head and growing widows peak in front. My bald spot is gone and widows peak isn't as prominent. It took awhile to work. It does work.

When you say a while, roughly speaking, about how long would you say?
@@stillnessinmotion81 i'm guessing .. 6 months.
He did say he's been taking it for years. I'd imagine you have to fix your general health first also.
@@rafaelshumaker1883 Interesting...Are you saying you believe it's better to have some fat in the meat you eat and, if so, why?

Same boat. I've had secondary hypogonadism for over a decade & get TRT. I'm balding quickly now, and TRT causes my prostate to enlarge. The benefits of the TRT in energy, mental clarity & weight loss are worth it, but the side effects are no joke. I'm not sure what to do.

Saw palmetto contains some beta-sitosterol but also comes with additional plant-based compounds. The primary difference here is the potency. When you want natural supplements for prostate health that are more potent, then opting for a formula that primarily uses beta-sitosterol is usually the better choice
Saw Palmetto irritate my body
I take only saw palmetto that has pumpkin seed and besides that beta sitosterol.

I don't think people realise how devastating hair loss is to a man's self esteem and self image. It's seen in society as "stop moaning about it and just get on with it".
Been thinking for 30 years, still thinking, don't care, it's superficial, don't care... biggest worry is sunburn.....
I tell people this all the time - it's absolutely devastating.
Before you get worried, though, assess what you've got and also know that the older you get the less you're really going to give a f♡(
Bruh,, DEVASTATING‼️
I like the way you are discussing things related to hair loss and prostate health. Keep up the great work Doc.!!!

Thanks for sharing!
.5mg is plenty. You can half your 1mgs and double your supply. Overseas that’s the normal dosage.
This is why it's great to let your body fast it helps put with other stuff

My pattern baldness happened at 25 and it was at that moment I knew I was destined for greatness! lol
Great work doc...I'm an advocate for natural supplements

20 percent is high when you take in account of how many people take it

Ever since i watched your videos (about seven months ago) I started taking a saw palmetto supplement daily, as well as zinc (with copper) pills. And thank God and you doctor, I saw a great improoving with my prostate health: easier urination during the day and much less visits to wc during the night! Thank you very much again for your medical advices! God bless you! Many many greetings from Athens, Greece! @@drrachael

Stinging nettle and pumpkin seed much better than saw palmetto. Pygeum is really good for prostate as well. Increases libido.
you are right you did your homework may want to try horny goat weed too
By pumpkin seed do you mean the actual pumpkin seeds or the extract?
@@Prolific707 extract. I take stinging nettle everyday

I enjoy listening to you because you give very great advice about everything, thank you
Is there a pharmaceutical grade saw palmetto that you recommend?
This is one of the finest black women I ever seen she's beautiful.
She looks jewish to me with dyed blonde hair🎉
@@RaymondWalinski nah man she looks Brazilian, or possibly from Switzerland with a good tan and Swedish root lift.
Love your enthusiasm and appreciate your videos. I started using Saw Palmetto due to prostate discomfort over a year ago.. and it helped at 1/2 the recommended dosage. Sadly Ive not seen an improvement in my hair loss which thinned out significantly about 4 years. While the loss has slowed..I don’t see any new hair growth.
she is so amazing - a doctor a clever person a beautyful woman a good speaked - love u!
Great Doc. I love your detailed explanations.
Dr. You are the breath of fresh air. Thank you for all you do for us.
All of the health care providers I had known all of them had no idea on natural cures or herbal supplements. All they knew it was top notch class slapping the patients with prescriptions for big pharma medications.
Doctor Ross, I love your energy, enthusiasm and passion. You deliver knowledge with great authority and confidence. Based on my personal knowledge and wide research on this subject you are correct in what you are saying.
Thanks Rachael. I've just been prescribed Finasteride and have been on Tamulosin for a few months. The potential serious side effects are horrific, so will back them off and try the saw palmetto route. Great site, so informative.

Thanks you for sharing your knowledge. God bless you!
Hormones in dairy promote cell growth - enlarged prostate. Sk if you do not cut down your dairy it may cancel out the SP effect.
Reduce dairy consumption and eat only hormone free food.
I heard that "blackseed oil" is excellent to rub into the scalp to actually grow back hair on the head.
Have you heard of this, Dr. Ross, and if you have, what do you think about "blackseed oil"?
I have heard taling black seed oil is very good for this and it can restore your hair color...but idk as I've never tried it. Worth a shot!
Hi Doc...is saw palmetto better than pumpkin seeds for prostrate enlargement?
many thanks in advance
You should use both at the same time either or is great for the prostate
@@davidthornton7080 thanks 🙏🏾 I guess the doctor is MIA

Hi Dr Ross what is best treatment for benign symptoms of ED ; and Peyronies disease ; urinary frequency for 65 yr old male ?
100%, Saw Palmetto I have been using for years instead of Finasteride (Also use the shampoo and Nutrafol). Great video and very informative, wish I had these videos ages ago but luckily had a good Urologist who told me these things.
How has this affected your hair loss stuff?
It's been good enough for me not exactly full like I'd want it but better than it was before. It takes a very long time and you have to be consistent. @@joshuathered1100
