Woodturning - The Biggest Aspen I’ve Ever Seen!

- In this woodturning and wood art video, I turn a piece of the largest Aspen tree I’ve ever seen into a giant pedestal bowl. I turned the Aspen wood in its wet state, using traditional woodturning techniques to get the rough shape, then let it sit in wood shavings until it was dry enough to finish. It was very, very wet! In fact, I had to do a bit of work on the lathe afterwards because it was getting a thin rust veneer on the bed!
Thanks for watching, liking, commenting, sharing and…if you’re not already…subscribing! It all really helps my channel out!
This piece isn’t for sale, but lots of my other pieces are: www.etsy.com/sh...
Very nice piece of workmanship
Beautiful work
thanks, Tim!
Your turning turned out great. To me it actually looks bigger than the log was when you started. Great work.
it does look thicker, more gerth
Thanks! It's actually so big I'm not sure what it will sell!
Nice. Ever thought about torching it to accentuate the grain. 😊
That's a great idea!
Beautiful work.
Thank you very much!

Thank you 👍
😘😘
Thank you!
Looks like birch to me
Nicely done. Impressive.
It is definitely aspen.
I have them about the same size in my area
It’s beautiful, but why didn’t you put a finish on it?
That wet it caused you lath to start rusting huh? Looks great and you did a wonderful job turning it!!!!
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks 👍
really amazing
Very nice sir that took some work beautiful
It was so big, and so wet...but so worth it!
Your chain saw needs sharpening and the log appears to be white birch not Aspen Aspen bark is smooth green and white wood
You're right about the saw. Been putting it off. You could be right about the wood type too. I didn't see the tree before it came down, but the owner was confident it was an Aspen and the tree guys who took it down told him it was the biggest Aspen they'd ever taken down, so...??
Beautiful and a lot of hard work and patience. When you started putting the chips around it I thought you might be going for a “raku” type charring effect. That might be too risky after all your work.
You need to sharpen your chainsaw.😂
You are right about that. I've never done it and the process seems intimidating. :)
Beautiful thing and fun art. Excuse me, may I have the power of the dynamo, how many horsepower, how many kilowatts, and how fast is it? Thank you
thanks! The lathe is a Laguna 18|36. You can get all the specs here: lagunatools.com/classic/lathes/revo-18-36-110v/
A real beauty!! TY
Such a great work. 👏👏
Thanks a lot 😊
Nice. Where did you get that gizmo you put in your chuck?
I can't remember what it's called, but I found it on Amazon.
@@CASWoodcraft can you see it in your order history? I looked but I don't see it
Beautiful outcome indeed!
I think so too! thank you!
Nice work and interesting process. Full view and Like 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm surprised that you didn't put a finish on this piece. Will the wood hold up without it. I don't know anything about Aspen.
Ah, you were watching carefully! Love it. I didn't put a finish on it because I absolutely loved the the whiteness of the wood and every finish out there will, at the least, impart a yellow/orange cast to it. That looks great on brown woods...really brings out their essence...but with a white wood like Aspen, it can turn the wood into a very different color. What I may do eventually is put a lacquer spray finish on it.
