Personally I think the rewrites are better than just raw criticism. It’s at least constructive and fun and I don’t see how it is worse than a critical review.
dont stop the rewrites! it sounds like you're stopping bc you feel they come off as disrespectful to the writers but they are such cool though experiments it would be a huge loss if you stopped doing them!
i agree, it was this exact kind of content that brought me into his channel, he's great at it. You can tell it comes from a place of love for the characters and storytelling.
If Nando really feel uncomfortable with the idea of "rewriting" , maybe he can change his approach to "what if I could write X without studio's constraints." So to not imply that he's better than the show writers, and merely a thought experiment on what one could write without outside influences.
Please don’t stop! I haven’t checked that video about why you intend to, but this series is literally my favorite thing on TH-cam, it’s why I subscribed and I love every episode
The most remarkable thing about the show for me was that in a show entirely about whether or not aliens could live peacefully on Earth, they did not even say the word 'Asgard' at any point. You'd think they would talk about the one successful and peaceful alien colony on Earth, if only to say why the Skrulls couldn't do the same. It felt like the showrunners must not have known about the end of Thor: Ragnorok, which is kinda wild given the film came out in 2017. Secret Invasion ends with the US declaring war on Asgard, and it seems like it was entirely accidental. I bet we never hear about that again.
O snap thanks for the Dimension 20 timestamps! And yea I don't see how they could sustain the anti-Asgardian plot point, just based on the tone set in Th4r. Especially given how they went so deep into the idea of Asgardians as gods i.e. Omnipotence City, as opposed to aliens like Skrulls and Kree
But in definition they are alien . Beings from outside of earth . Just not Norma biological beings. They are powerful but marvel chooses to call them gods ….. they aren’t gods just very powerful beings . And everyone in the multiverse experiences an afterlife. Asguardians specifically go to Val hala . It’s explained in moonkight
To be fair, they didn't confirm Asgardians settled on Earth until 2019 during Endgame. They might have been developing by then, but delayed by COVID. Then again ... that's still more than enough time to rewrite it.
It's more than possible a New Asgard cameo was dropped during the massive reshoot process. Heck, one of the shots from the trailer shows Nick Fury walking in a park while being stalked by a pair of ravens. I was SO sure New Asgard was going to play a part in this show from that shot alone. Imagine, Fury contacting an Agent of Asgard for information or an alliance in case of all-out war!
Nando please keep doing the rewrites or “without studio constraints” as someone else commented. Genuinely among the best essay-esq videos on the platform
I think this was a pretty strong, respectful way to do a rewrite. Pick only the media that massively failed for a variety of unexpected circumstances and it still feels respectful
It was never disrespectful to begin with imo. He was never "This is bad, trash movie, I'm here to correct it... yadda yadda." It was always, "I like/appreciate the movie, but there's this part that I did not like and here's why it doesn't work for me..."
@@casualpotato44 My comment was more a response to Nando's reluctance to do more rewrites, not this one in particular. It's not that Nando is being disrespectful at all -he's always been great. It's more about that, because art is subjective (we assume everyone is making the best art they can), any rewrites are inherently "disrespectful" in big quotes (by implying the artist's best subjective opinion is a bad one, at least to the re-writer). Point being Nando can and should do more rewrites without feeling like he's disrespecting original writers as long as he focuses on movies whose failures are beyond the writers' control.
Nando: "I'm not going to do any more one change/rewrites." *Secret Invasion gets released* Nando: (Plays opening sequence of Spider-Verse) "Alright. Let's do this one last time."
Kingsley Ben-Adair going from a serial killer to a Ken doll in the span of EXACTLY a month is so iconic (Secret Invasion was June 21st, and Barbie was July 21st)
One thing I'd add is that for the title credits sequence, instead of the gawd awful Ai mess they used, have newspaper clippings and news segments conveying exposition about important story stuff: ross getting elected, thanos , the snap, the blip, the avengers.. But have them slowly change as the series goes on, adding news reports that are in the show. Also (and more importantly) changing news articles to reveal skrulls in photographs that (in earlier episodes) just had humans in, maybe even having news anchors in the news clips delivering their stories in later episodes *as skrulls*. This way, as the show is revealing the secret invasion the credits are slowly getting invaded (and displaying that they've always been here)
I love how you include small jokes and callbacks to other comics and movies, it shows that you really know all the source materials and wanted the tv show to succeed. 51:34 really got a chuckle out of me
I meaaaaaan... we just call it the Nando timeline. You've already got plenty of content for a rich & fulfilled timeline that is technically canon or possible without disrespecting what the studio heads/writers establish.

@@garyconstanza3120 let's not forget secret invasion had an inspiring/promising source material, they (Feige and crew) decided to start from scratch by pure dumbness

Can we talk about how dumb it is that it's now canon that all you need to replicate a superhero's power is their DNA? The implications of this are a serious oversight IMO.
Secret invasion honestly is a topic that needs more run time than your average movie. Ideally it would have been a series of movies or threaded through multiple projects. The version Nando outlined was solid. There is little more that could be asked for in story designed to be told in less than 4 hours of content. By how large the cast he would want to use is I honestly do not think it could every have been run as a show budget wise but it was certainly would not have been enough to carry a movie.

I personally think this show should have been called "Fury: Agents of Sword" and been all about Nick and whole bunch of Agent characters doing spy missions, with the overall arc being the Skrull's invading. The show would eventually lead into a Secret Invasion movie. They could have shown more scenes up in Saber as well, with Monica, Agent Brand, etc. Since WandaVision, SWORD has fallen off the face of the Earth. Maybe it was established that it was going away? I can't remember. But it seems odd. I'm sure there are a tonne of characters, old and new that could have shown up in this show, with Talos of course and how he's been doing down on Earth. Eventually, they'd uncover a conspiracy that an outlying faction of Skrulls are trying to invade Earth entirely too make it their own, and perhaps Fury does try to contact Captain Marvel, or other heroes by the time he finds out, but he gets captured or stopped somehow. There's so many ways this show could have been better, and more fun, it's such a shame we ended up with what we got. Truly one of the worst MCU projects.
This is awesome!! I love these rewrites! Helps me think through how to be intentional with themes and character arcs in my own writing! Thanks for the inspiration!!
38:47 Y2K was actually for real a problem -- it just got massively sensationalized AND it actually got solved, and between those two things, everyone who remembers it assumes it wasn't a big deal. But it *was actually a problem*! Ok, nitpick over. This was really cool. Your analysis of why the tv show's premise fell apart was really helpful, and (among other things) you did a really effective job at editing together the discussion between Gravik and Talos -- the visuals you used for it were very effective.
I've been half-hoping, half-waiting for this video ever since the series' finale aired, knowing you could do a much better job. Thank you for the upload!
nando i know you already made your decision but just for what its worth, your rewrites are brilliant and i hope you keep finding a way to suggest alternate paths things couldve gone and work thru what butterfly effects they couldve caused
Your re-writes are always thought provoking and entertaining. Hard to believe someone hasn't signed you by now. Question: is it easier for you to come up with a better storyline once a show has aired or have these ideas been in your head from the beginning. Regardless, you're doing a great job. Keep up the amazing content!
I'm sad this this is the last rewrite, but will admit that you truly saved the best one for last. Thanks for these Nando. Always looking forward to what you have going on next.
Secret Invasion should have drawn inspiration from films like John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), They Live (1988), or The Faculty (1998). Instead, we got a plot suitable for a Saturday morning cartoon.
I'm not someone who hates marvel or enjoys seeing them in a rough patch or even hope they fail forever, however this show really was a failure to me sadly, I love this rewrite and I love that you did this
I know you have the benefit of hindsight and the knowledge of the final outcome and the perception of it when you make these, but I'm nevertheless always so impressed with how thorough and well-thought your rewrites are - Great job with this one! I get why you stopped making these types of videos but man I'm gonna miss them because you're great at it and I think I would have loved this version of Secret Invasion!
This rewrite is so captivating. I just finished the series and something just felt wrong. I wasn’t hooked or really moved by much in it as a lot felt flat. I’m thirty minutes in here and I really feel this pacing would have made the series shine!
You have an incredible understanding of the two most important parts of screenwriting - character motivations and how to ratchet up tension. This is an incredible story. Thank you for sharing it. PS - I laughed out loud at least three times in this video with just your placeholder dialogue alone.
I love this pitch. I think it's a wonderful way to learn about writing. And it's delivered in a great, friendly way. Gonna miss these videos. Thanks, Nando!
I still think it's bizarre, how they took a major avengers level event from the comics, and turned it into a spy "thriller", without spying, or thriller.
Keep doing the rewrites. As long as Marvel aren't putting the work in to get full scripts before filming, I dont think anyone owes them any grace. Your rewrites are the best.
Another excellent rewrite. I'm definitely in the "just make this Avengers 5" camp (especially with the next Avengers film still years away), but this is an excellent re-working within the 6-episode streaming show framework, and showing the team in action at the beginning is a nice touch, plus the inclusions of Bolivar Trask and Sharon Carter. Picking up Sharon's thread really helps this feel like a vital middle chapter like CIVIL WAR, rather than the optional side-story it feels like now. Also, you really nailed Harrison Ford's vibe with the President Ross scenes, it's enough to make me forget that we haven't seen him in the role yet.
I love the idea of making secret invasion a pseudo avengers type crossover with the shows, with rambo from wandavision, powerbroker from tfatws, a cameo of the new avengers in ep 1, she hulk references, etc. It gives the tv shows a bit more connective tissue to both the movies and other tv shows.
Fury needed to lose the invasion, and then we should have gotten a following movie of the 'Avengers: Secret Invasion'. The show can be Fury discovering the invasion, and then the movie is them dealing with the fallout of Fury failing to stop it ahead of time.
My one change from your thing is I wouldn’t have Rhodes be dead after civil war I would still have him be locked up somewhere and then have skrull Rhodes die at the end… personally wouldn’t like one of the original mcu characters just being a different guy… overall your rewrite was great
This completely pulls in the old feel of the MCU while still feeling fresh, as well as the complexity of the comics and how there are constant overlapping settings and characters at times. I watched the entirety of Secret Invasion for some reason and hearing you rewrite it makes me think the writers just sit in a void or something.
This is amazing!! This feels like PEAK MCU, and I like how you actually made things from FATWS pay off! Sharon Carter, Flagsmashers, Karli, etc. And it ties into Cap4 and Thunderbolts instead of setting up a 2nd Season that no one wanted. Amazing!!
On y2K as a programmer, we spent literal billions of dollars industry wide to take the needed steps to keep the digital world running smoothly, because at the heart, most of our calender systems could not track centuries, and thus everything interacting even remotely with dates, including but not limited to operating systems, and dependency management systems (how programmers reuse code from other projects) had to be reworked, and then everything using those systems had to be reworked. preparations started as much as 20 years before Y2K at some companies.
Really going to miss these rewrites. There is an incredible catharsis to having a strong head cannon narrative to replace the disappointing aired version. This is my secret invasion now.
These are my favourite content you make and the level of detail and quality of ideas is absolutely unparalleled online. PLEASE DON'T STOP DOING THEM!!!!!
I stand by my opinion that Captain Marvel should have taken place at the time Secret Invasion does. Captain Carol Danvers is working with Maria, they discover Rhodey was kidnapped and replaced by a Skrull a month or two after Sam becomes the new Captain America, so he was the one there in Endgame and he attended Tony's funeral. Nick Fury comes down from SABER, they investigate, expose the small group of Skrulls, which are the first wave of an invasion. Then Carol gets her movie, and while hunting the last of the Skrulls on Earth, she encounters the Kree and gets powers, has her final fight out in the woods, and the fight is seen by Kamala Khan, who's on a school camp, so she gets a Peter Parker Iron Man 2 scene and she ends up idolising Carol, who no one else knows about, and then she gets her powers, and for the Ms Marvel Post Credit scene, Monica and Fury show up at Kamala's front door, and we'd know who Monica is, because she was in WandaVision.
Legends of Tomorrow already cast the perfect Booster Gold: Donald Faison. I'm just sad that we didn't get that Time Jail season of LoT where we could have had a Faison!Booster Gold Braff!Blue Beetle team-up.
Great Rewrite! Only thing I would change is keeping Sonya the way she was in the og. She was one of the only bright spots and would hate to see her get killed off so early.
Well done. Your rewrite is brilliant and very true to the MCU we knew and loved. You make all the choices seem so natural, the reveals, the payoffs, and the ways it ties in with MCU past and present. Very satisfying show that should have been.
Yes!! This is brilliant, love the themes, the callbacks to other world building that's been happening in the mcu, the characters returning, and the setup for stuff we know is happening later down the mcu. Even most of the dialogue was pretty Awesome. I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I often find your dialogue a little clunky, (which is understandable, you're more of a "story" guy rather than a "script" guy) but most of it was on point this time. :)
Was nando literally waiting for me to get nebula watch this video and then put it on TH-cam? I literally saw it like five seconds before the TH-cam fans. Oh well at least I can be a few minutes early on the next video
I have some reservations, though many of which may just be my own personal biases, but I like it a lot more than what we got. (Some of my reservations being that two of the only British characters we have not being British at all and instead being disguises of another American accented character in this already far too America-centric for a galactic-scale multiverse setting)
Loved this! Great work. It's amazing that they couldn't pull off anything close to this. You intertwined the themes and made it work perfectly for this day and age. Furys speech at the end telling his enemy that he is worth defending, was beautiful. Having both Ross and Gravek be the antagonists - the authority and the terrorist, with both terrans and skrulls in the crossfire and the only solution is understanding and trust. And in the end it works. Perdect. You did callbacks to everything from Civil War to Thor Ragnarok to Captain Marvel and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, making it feel like a full aand coherent world and not like just random cameos. Please keep doing rewrite videos!
I agree with others I love the rewrites, as long as you acknowledge they aren’t meant to say the actual writers are bad people I don’t see the problem. I am sure writes at Marvel studios are always saying what they would do differently with a script what we see on screen is just the last guys take. Your videos are just one more guys opinion on a different direction. As an amateur writer, other writers do that to my work and I do it to theirs. I don’t always agree with their takes they don’t always agree with mine but it’s part of the collaborative process. I understand if you don’t but I would love it if you keep doing these
Personally I think the rewrites are better than just raw criticism. It’s at least constructive and fun and I don’t see how it is worse than a critical review.

This is light years away from the source material and thank you. This is what this series was supposed to be.
And if you watch Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes you'll see the saturday morning cartoon doing it better
Or The Hidden (1987). But why stop on creature movies? Should've gone with Cold War movies too while we're at it.
What we got is actually a boring story for 5 hours and at the end a Saturday morning cartoon special for the finale
right
I wish Marvel movies would draw inspiration from movies as loving homages while making it their own thing instead of cheap nods to movies/shows.
It's the end of an era 😭
Thank you for making so many clever rewrites Nando.
(special shout-out to the Bizzaro Solution, my personal favorite).
51:34 “Boom, you looking for this?”
Rewrites are the best nando videos plz don't stop it. 🙏
I appreciate that you didn’t change your voice for any characters except Harrison Ford’s
This pitch is great. Every beat works. I hope you continue with these because you are very talented and these are super entertaining.
51:32 I LOVE this throwback line, “You lookin’ for this?” would be so fun to see come back
I still think it's bizarre, how they took a major avengers level event from the comics, and turned it into a spy "thriller", without spying, or thriller.
Keep doing the rewrites. As long as Marvel aren't putting the work in to get full scripts before filming, I dont think anyone owes them any grace.
Your rewrites are the best.
This is phenomenal, these usually are. It's very different to write these retrospectively, but still. ❤
I still am not a fan of Rhodey being a Skroll since Civil War but the way you did it is definitely better than what the show did.
“You looking for this?” Is gold
The Nick fury lines were spot on and hilarious you gotta keep these up bro
I love the idea of making secret invasion a pseudo avengers type crossover with the shows, with rambo from wandavision, powerbroker from tfatws, a cameo of the new avengers in ep 1, she hulk references, etc. It gives the tv shows a bit more connective tissue to both the movies and other tv shows.
"This should be an avengers movie because it helps engagement metrics or something"
Your rewrite is literally perfect, I am going to miss these videos. Thank you for everything you do!
Fury needed to lose the invasion, and then we should have gotten a following movie of the 'Avengers: Secret Invasion'. The show can be Fury discovering the invasion, and then the movie is them dealing with the fallout of Fury failing to stop it ahead of time.
I love the way you set things up subtley, mentioning trask or shi'ar without it being significant yet. Also im sad armor wars isnt your rhodey now
Don't stop the rewrites man , I need my headcanon
My one change from your thing is I wouldn’t have Rhodes be dead after civil war I would still have him be locked up somewhere and then have skrull Rhodes die at the end… personally wouldn’t like one of the original mcu characters just being a different guy… overall your rewrite was great
This completely pulls in the old feel of the MCU while still feeling fresh, as well as the complexity of the comics and how there are constant overlapping settings and characters at times. I watched the entirety of Secret Invasion for some reason and hearing you rewrite it makes me think the writers just sit in a void or something.
I would love for you to keep doing rewrites. It’s the very thing that allowed me to find your channel.
I'd really wish you'd continue you're One Small Change series. I know a few channels do similar things though.
"Lookin for THIS?" Was the best friggin part. U write for the plucky marvel movie tide turn at the end of a battle so dang well it was perfect bruh 😂
Not relevant to the topic of this video.
@@KnightEclipser video blows it off like it was all a hoax.
Cool
This is amazing.
The only issue is Rhodes death. It still downplays him not being there for Tony's death.
...the fact that you Incorporated "looking for this?" into the mix as organically as you did is testament to your skill. And I wasn't ready!
Really going to miss these rewrites. There is an incredible catharsis to having a strong head cannon narrative to replace the disappointing aired version. This is my secret invasion now.
"Which meeeeans..."
"😞 Yeah, I'm gonna go down there and punch him."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
These are my favourite content you make and the level of detail and quality of ideas is absolutely unparalleled online. PLEASE DON'T STOP DOING THEM!!!!!
As one of the 5 people that actually liked and enjoyed Secret Invasion as is... I really liked your version too
I stand by my opinion that Captain Marvel should have taken place at the time Secret Invasion does.
Does anyone know the name of the music playing when Nick and Maria were talking and he said he took a chance on her? It’s absolutely beautiful
"I don't think I'm a better writer than the people who actually wrote Secret Invasion." - No worries, Nando. We all do.
That’s not nice
I love that little "Boom! You lookin for this?" 😂
Well done. Your rewrite is brilliant and very true to the MCU we knew and loved. You make all the choices seem so natural, the reveals, the payoffs, and the ways it ties in with MCU past and present. Very satisfying show that should have been.
I love listening to these videos like they’re a audiobook. Wish these videos weren’t ending, but I get it.
Dont stop the rewrites sir! We all enjoy them!
I understand if you don’t but I would love it if you keep doing these
To help with engagement I think this should have been an Avengers movie
