      It's actually a condemnation of modernity that his kindness in helping his neighbor is even remarkable. I remember when I was growing up, my father was always either helping or getting help from neighbors for various projects.
      In today's world, you are lucky if you know your neighbor's name!

    Saved my butt with your video. I was replacing my daughter's 24 year old hot water heater and ran into the old PVC being expanded and the couplers wouldn't fit. I was ready to call a plumber and eat crow but decided to Google a resolution. Kudos to you!!! Picked up a heat gun and I was back in business! ❤

    Your a genius. I have a 2500 gallon water tank and irrigation pump that broke at a PVC joint on the suction side. After cutting away the broken pipe the new 2 inch couplers would not fit. Your heat gun and soap trick helped me fix it in under an hour. I plan to leak test tomorrow after I let the glue set for 24 hours. Thank you so much.

    Giving a thumbs up for helping a neighbor! I don't mean to knit pick, but I've been gluing PVC for over fourty years and was taught by the best at a very young age. When you twist the pipe after the glue, you should ALWAYS only twist in one direction,
    about a 1/4 turn or better, not back and forth. I'm not going to bother explaining why, but let's just say it makes for a much stronger bond. I was also taught, and have always done so, when you are coupling two sides, you should glue both ends at the same time, then turn the pipe (in one direction only) between the two joints. That way, both connections get a twist, not just one end. Nice tip on the oversize pipe scenario...👍

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been doing it that way since 1989, never any problem. One thing about PVC, if it's clean, when it's glued together, it never leaks. Thanks for watching!

    • @ryancook1608

      Manufacturers recommended procedure, which is probably found on the can.
      8. Push pipe FULLY into fitting using a ¼ turning motion until pipe bottoms
      I'd also like to say that heating and bending pvc water lines are not in compliance with plumbing code or the manufacturers spec. Should have probably cut that pipe somewhere back beyond that 90 to a place that would allow a fitting to go on correctly.
      And what's the point in talking about primer and inspections when it's obviously not getting inspected. I've heard that all sorts of plumbing is gotten away with in FL.
      I'm from Wilmington NC, one of the strictest counties in the USA for inspections. I had to be a grade A student to make it. After years so trusty that I could pass an inspection on reputation alone... They practically write the international code from there.
      Anyways good vid, and thanks!. Now that I'm out of construction and onto being a service tech $$$, this info may come in handy as a last resort for a temporary repair...

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Ryan Cook If the PVC pipe manufacturers can heat and flare the ends of the pipe, so can I, no difference. If I cut it further back, then end up with the same larger pipe, then I gave myself more work. As for the twisting, how exactly do you plan on twisting a 90 deg elbow when installing it? :-) Lastly, there's nothing temporary about the repair.

    • @ryancook1608
      @ryancook1608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@electronicsNmore I'm just a technical person, I have to be, there are specs and codes. So if the manufacturer must use hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and scientific engineering to mold PVC, it's ok for you to use a blow dryer, even though it goes against mnfg spec and the plumbing code. Ok... As far as cutting the pipe back to just under the ground, level, or just above, I am positive the fitting will go on correctly, and save you the time you spent heating up the fitting and destroying it's integrity. I could have made this repair in five minutes, and correctly by all standards. About glueing 90's onto pipe, simple, you dry fit a piece on the other end, glue the 90 on, give it a 1/4 turn until aesthetically straight shown by your dry fit piece, I do it all the time. Are you an electrician by trade and experience?

    • @ryancook1608
      @ryancook1608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HVACLife it's not religious or obsessive, it's just the rules. It's not arguing over a particular way of doing things, it's letting the rules be known. There are many ways to do things correctly. Where I come from the code and mnfg spec are highly enforced, one could even fail an inspection for being a few inches to long on their hanger spacing. The rules are the rules, there's a correct way to do things and an incorrect way. It's not about what could work for a time. That's all. I still appreciate the video and may incorporate this technique one day as an emergency temporary repair.

The pipe in the ground is 40 yr old thin wall 3" pvc and there are no couplers available anywhere I have searched. Doing this with a 3" sked 40 coupler should work. I had not thought about heating up the coupler. Fingers crossed ! Just a follow up a little later from commenting, it worked ! Boy, am I happy, thanks again for the tip !

    It’s crazy how often I come across oversized PVC. Back in the late 70’s to early 80’s apparently the different manufacturers all had the same ID but to prevent different brand fittings and pipes from being used they changed their OD just ever so slightly. I work for a large water utility company. We end up having to use Bolted Couplings to connect our copper or brass pipe to their private lines.
    This by far gives a cleaner appearance. When we are done my work all get buried. Great video and great tip.

    Another tip for a solid glue connection is to debur the ends of the pipe after it's cut. If not the ridge left after cutting will just push the glue into the fitting when the pipe is pushed in. Like a syringe. You don't want that syringe effect.

    I'm installing a drain pipe in my yard. French drain from retaining wall to a channel by back porch. Then I need to connect a PVC pipe or some type of hose that is smaller in size to go through a backwall fitting. It barely rains in Phoenix but, since ground is hard, when it does my backyard floods and water sits for several days. So , since it doesnt rain a lot I'm not concerned about the smaller pipe not keeping up with water filling drains.

    why was the existing pipe too large? never seen that with stuff from the 1970s up until today. Was it actually 1-1/2" (probably not, that would be a lot larger)? Was it a non-standard pipe to begin with? (not Iron Pipe Size (IPS)?) Very strange...
