      What audio recording has ever been produced without using software? It’s all a myth everything is hybrid to some degree it’s just to what point how many times it’s been converted and the quality of those converters at each stage which by the time it reaches your sampler is already aLOT.

    Yes i definitely agree with you about hardware sounding really good. I use hardware in my production, the difference between the software, hardware is that hardware has a more open airy sound. Also the keyboards and machines have analog circuitry , which comes out the outputs and into the input which help power the sound.

    When I first started producing I learned in an analog studio. Mackie boards with remotes running into ADAT machines. I love that sound mixing was easy as hell on that format, when I built my own and realized how much that equipment actually is it was cheaper to go digital. If I had a choice it would be hardware all day, but yeah nobody hears the difference anyway.

    MPC's is basically a computer/controller with a DAW like program inside it. It's all a mind thing cuz In the core of all standalone hardware equipment is a computer/operation system. The difference may lie in each tool's factory pre settings or template which can always be altered.

    Ive been using Ableton for awhile now, it was a situation building a pc to run it the way I wanted. Went the round with different mixers and ways to plug in outside of just midi. Its all hardware, hardware synths sounds amazing especially the old synth. All 80s, 90s, early 2000 tracks was made using hardware synth send to a mixer or multitrack. Like you said, you can make anything sound great if your good at what you have. Here is a quote from the great Bruce Lee " Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own."

  • @MsInstrumentalBeatz
    @MsInstrumentalBeatz ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice vid, one of my favorite channels to watch. One thing to note is that many hardware synths and keyboards are made for live performances and they have to cut through a dense "live sound environment" like through other instruments, singers and crowd noise. For this reason, I think hardware keyboards are actually created to sit in a mix well. For me, I enjoy producing using synths and keyboards because it's fun and I like that I'm tracking with audio (not midi) which gets me closer to a finished song. Then on top of that, the tracks sounds closer to being mixed. Mind you, I'm running them through a DI box and some specialty preamps most of the time.

  • @NYGiantsDiEhArD
    @NYGiantsDiEhArD 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My position on the topic is that a COMBINATION is the most deadly. My humble “poor man’s” setup is: Mac Air 2 laptop that costed around 1.5k (beefy enough RAM to do the job), a Behringer Poly D synth (based almost exactly on the trillion dollar original Minimoog; sounds fat as fuck) and a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 to make love between them. So really, kinda a simple but trick modern setup. Of course I have studio speakers, I have an American Fender Strat, I have a Blues Deluxe tweed amp (which sounds delicious), but these are auxiliary to my current production process, because I don’t have a valuable guitar mic. So really, it’s synth for bass and lead, interface, into my computer for everything production concerned. And honestly, it’s not bad. Some will say you lose some “warmth” from digitizing the analog signal of an analog synth through an interface and into a DAW, but honestly, I think that’s sentimental bull crap. I mean, maybe it’s true to the obsessive ear, but I think the point of having hardware instruments is that it gives you assurance that you’re dealing with a real instrument so the sound is true and realistic. I don’t always trust a 50-dollar plugin in terms of authenticity and sound quality and would rather spend the $500-$1,500 on a nice juicy synth that I can play with my fingers. Conversely, I don’t see the need to spend a fortune on all-hardware workflow products like mixers and recorders just so I can say my vibe is so “90s” and its analog signal front-to-back, tape track sequencing and all. I mean it’s cool if you’re rich and have a degree in music production, but for normal people, it’s like buying a rare classic car for daily commuting. When it comes to actual production infrastructure, lean into the 21st century, get a DAW, and call it a day. Leave the “hardware” ritual to awesome synths and real guitars that you can then record into your DAW.

    I'll put it like this...I like brass instruments. and until this day I have yet to find a vst with some full, rich, brass like the ones from the Motif XS/XF/MOX/MODX. That includes some other sounds as well. It isn't as convenient as vst's but the sound quality and thickness is way better.

  • @tbonebeats6429
    @tbonebeats6429 ปีที่แล้ว

    The workaround to achieve the same thing with a daw is to go out the individual analog outs and come back in.
    That extra step from digital to analog to 1/4 cables, then to analog to digital adds something to the sound. Which is basically what your hardware gear is doing. Your hardware is a daw with digital to analog converters.

    I would agree with this for analog synths and real instruments. However, stuff like workstation keyboards like the MODX, you can the equivalent and probably better (given the higher quality of virtual instruments over most workstation sounds) by running outs of your audio interface into the inputs. Same exact concept. In that regard I’d say that the digital keyboards aren’t better sonically

  • @beatsheik
    @beatsheik ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed with everything! Daws are for efficiency but hardware is for sonics.
    I went through about 8-10 vintage hardware samplers in the last few years and saw that a hybrid approach is the way. It just shapes each sound into a similar spectrum and you can throw that into a DAW to spice things up and youll be done.

  • @py_a_thon

    One of the strongest arguments in favor of analog synthesis and hardware is 2 fold.
    1. Limitations breed creativity.
    2. Even industry software synths can be a pain to tune, and the presets often sound like trash(or everything else). Analog synths/hardware tend to sound good with minimal tuning, and the presets are less...shall we say, "demo mode" sounding.
    That being said, a high end soft synth WILL sound amazing. Once you know what you are doing. As will some random vst you find at 2am.

    To achieve this with vst instruments, you'd
    be better off re-recording the vst synths
    analog by using stereo paired mics. It
    solves a lot of the work in trying to get the
    *'3D-Sound* with in the box techniques."

    @kvmoore1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree 100% For the actual music composition process, I prefer hardware anyday over software. Now for recording, mixing, and even sound design when it comes to shaping drums, the DAW is like a best friend.
    Yes, tracking out all of the instruments can be a pain in the butt if you have to sync everything and run multiple passes one at a time. However, if you have a big enough interface with enough inputs where you can run everything straight into the interface on separate outputs and track everything in one pass after it has all been composed and sequenced (using the hardware sequencer of course), it's GRAVY!!! That's how I do it.
    The reward and satisfaction I get is the fact the recorded tracks already pretty much sound the way I want them to from the get go and there's really not a whole lot that need to be done as far as mixing other than than just level balancing, maybe a little EQing and/or compression if necessary, and perhaps some effects (choruses, reverbs, delays, etc....). That's basically it!

  • @alexovercast3359
    @alexovercast3359 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can absolutely sound huge with software. Software is key to making modern electronic music. Getting loud and full tracks gets damn scientific (Like lab coat and clipboard lol) with some of those genres. I'd suggest checking out "Baphometrix - Clip to zero production strategy" for an insight into how some of those producers and getting ridiculously loud, yet clean mixdowns.
    The benefit of hardware is the way it forces you to work. This is why I'm building up my gear again after purging for awhile. You gotta get it right at the source with hardware and not get lost in the infinity of options that software can provide. The less decisions a producer has to make the better each decision will be. This is why I'm using a hybrid approach and trying to be focused with a clearly defined process whether in or out of the box. The money chain on the way in is kinda baked into the sample libraries (most of them) I picked up - good raw analog drum sounds tracked through a money chain and in some cases sampled into a classic mpc or sp1200... I layer them in the box and use good plugins (both instrument and processing) to tie it all together. No need going another round trip on conversion usually, unless I purposely want to hit a guitar pedals or use the pres and EQ on the vintage desk I got sitting here- in that case I'm going for the old school rough n ready sound.
    Just my 2 cents.

    Facts. More work but the results are superior to virtual instruments. I am investing in more hardware synths like the Arturia Minifreak. Yes, there is a plug in version but there is a noticeable difference vs the hardware. Nothing like analog circuitry hitting the converters of a quality interface. I sometimes run the hardware instruments through an old mixer and then into the interface. Believe it or not, clients are noticing the difference. For those who are serious, I offer analog summing using the Dangerous Music D-Box. Less processing after the fact with hardware. Great video!

    Well what about analog vs digital..?
    A real oscillator on a bass synth (minimoog or Behringer model D) sounds WAY better than any digital synth or DAW.
    But modern softsynths are beginning to sound so good, you can’t really tell if it’s analog or not.

  • @2ammusik
    @2ammusik ปีที่แล้ว

    I pretty much own only analog synths. Full analog VCO synths and it’s something software can’t quite emulate. The only digital synth I have is the Virus TI2 and I still think the sound beats any virtual instrument I have.
    But like you said. The average listener does not gaf. It’s all personal preference for us music guys. I agree that using hardware gets you a better mix faster. You don’t need as many elements to make it sound fuller. Easy to do the “less is more” approach when doing music with hardware imo.

    Great video Bolo! I've been creating on the MPC KEYS 61 for about 3 months now. I really love it! I definitely hear a difference between the MPC N Logic.. You mentioned you run it into a your preamp. I didn't know you can do that 🤦🏽‍♂️. Anytime I use the MPC ive been disconnecting the monitor cables from my Focusrite interface to go into the MPC. Then reconnecting the cables to the Interface to use Logic. Any tips on a better set up I'd appreciate bro 🙏🏽

    I think hardware sounds better because of the output gain that is on the instruments as well as whatever other hardware you are running them into versus software is always limited to your audio card. You can have the latest software VST running on the most powerful computer you can afford but if you are running the basic audio drivers MME, DX ASIO, etc. or you have an audio device where they didn’t use the best AD/DA converters along with other things such as Frequency Response, Output Impedance, Dynamic Range, Gain Control Range etc. it can sound different on every device you play it on. Kind of like how earphones and speakers can make a track sound different. To sum it all up, garbage in, garbage out.

    Great video, Bolo. I come from planet analog and totally agree with your opinion. I've used more analog gear than digital from the Akai S-950, Ensoniq ASR, Yamaha SY77 and of course all of the MPC's. I once spoke to Rodger Linn who told me about the differences between the SP1200 and the MPC 60II. The SP1200 had 12bit outputs vs 16bits on the MPC which resulted in a cleaner vs dirty sound. It was through that conversation that he guided me towards Bruce Forat and sent my MPC to him for a full-blown modification of the output circuit board boosting the signal to +4db's. It made other MPC's wanna retire 😂😂 Check out Bruce Forat online. ✌🏽

    It depends on the hardware , nobody telling me a cheap casio sounds better than some vst synth piano. While hardware may sound better it doesn't produce the greatest workflow, furthermore it brings in the new modern workflow called hybrid.
    I have a Yamaha motif 88 original.

      That’s assuming you have any computer experience I don’t and I’ve lost so many tracks and music trying to learn also it’s not that much more expensive really because they’re all the ones that are that expensive you might as well rent one out or a studio and the laptop thing you need a producer or you’ll have some reactions and people get tempted but they won’t even be themselves so if the market wasn’t popular with the W-2s they would make hardware that is reliable as an iPhone

    True analog sounds better, my moog one sounds incredible but for modern stuff, there are so many fx applied to sounds and tweaking going on that you can’t do outside the computer. You’ll spend just as much time adding fx to the outboard stuff to make it fit todays over processing.
