- In this video we revisit the budget 454 build. We have rebuilt this entire engine with no machine work, and trying to save money wherever possible without sacrificing horsepower or longevity.

Really nice job. It brings back memories when I helped my Dad put the engine together on our 1950 olds rocket 88 engine I was 8 years old I am 71 now. You did a lot of great shopping on those parts for that engine build too. All those parts add up but hey you will have a real screamer of an engine no matter what car you put that in.

This reminds me of my first build..my first car,a 67' SS Camaro that had a 327,not a 350..I was 16 way back in 1982 and was making $2.75 an hour..took me forever to be able to afford to do the engine myself how I wanted it done..I did have the best machinist do all the block and crank work and balancing but I did all the building and install..it was so badass...now watching this video is making me jones all these years later to do another one,which I will eventually do when the time comes.

You can definitely build horsepower using aftermarket and used parts. Did it a lot racing brackets but when we stepped up to Super comp (8.90) Super E (7.90) Then Top dragster (7.50's) we built BBC engines. Dart blocks, splayed 4 bolt rod caps, filled block, Scat crank, Carrillo rods, Crane roller cam, the entire valve train was Jessel, Brodix Brute force ported aluminum heads. Matched intake, 1050 Dominator ported to 1150. On the dyno at 468 cubes it built just over 1000 horses and about 900 plus torque at 7400 RPM running on C-14 racing gas. Ad on some nitrous it ran 7.50's. Got out when qualifying alone was in the mid to low 6's. Just built a really reasonable 350 small block Chevy blower motor for my rat rod. Used almost all used, vintage and some new parts and a 1960's GMC 6.71 blower. Good job proving it can be done on a budget. Always enjoy your family oriented video's. Keep up the good work.

It's good to start them while they are young, I taught my son how to build engines when he was 12. He's in his 30s now and still wrenching. He's better than me at it.

Also when you're breaking in a camshaft you want to use non detergent engine oil. If you use regular detergent engine oil it will wash the cam Lube off of the cam

I didn't know at the time I traded for it but I acquired a L21 454 ,thought at the time was a L29 but after researching I found out just why the L21 engines were sought after over all others! Enjoy the channel buddy, sometimes its nice to take a step back and start back over like we did in our previous days of building cars!

This is how my Dad and I rebuilt engines in the 70s and my Dad did the same before that with his dad in the 50s. I love to watch all the comments of all the kids that think everything needs to go to a machine shop etc. We didn't have the $$ for that we rebuilt Chevys and MGs and Austin-Healeys and Pontiacs and Sunbeams etc. in the garage and after that I worked in the Oilfields and we rebuilt Detroit Diesels in the field and on offshore platforms and they all worked as they should. I'm doing a full roller 880 block 350 right now and watching a ton of videos te remind myself of things I have forgotten. It's been 20 years since I have rebuilt one. Man have to the prices of parts gone up. Awesome to see someone passing on knowledge to the younger kids. Thanks for the Video.
Worked at a gas station in the mid 1970's. Checked oil with gas purchase, etc. Had customers that I saw 2 times a week for a fill-up. I liked seeing these 454's in cars that were driven by little old ladies. They had no interest in getting there, fast. 350's were everywhere. Saw a few 402's... I really like your content, and the goats. We are almost neighbors. I'm in Asheville.

Great job on the engine build part 1 and now part 2. This brought me back to my high school days when rebuilding my 1970 SS 396 Chevelle motor. Something about a big block that you just can’t resist! It’s only fitting that you put this in a vintage Chevy. My favorite is a 68-70 Chevelle but a Nova or even a Camaro would be cool. 👍🏻

@@Sleeperdude Yes , I learned to let the son mar the car with the plastic bucket ; while washing it. I learned to be less fussy and perfect. Kids and relationship is of higher importance.

Why do I watch your videos because, one family participates in your projects and two this is about as true to real life builds that the average person can do for themselves. I mean it always pissed me off when most of the videos out there say a budget build today you can do at home and then they basically build a vehicle that the average person can't afford to do because of whatever reason but love working on our projects without having to go take out a huge loan to do so. This is truly how a person who loves to do things like this would do on a budget. When others say build on a budget they forget to say how much the budget is 😂. If your budget is like mine it's like this and build at home the best way and affordable as you can do.

This reminds me of facing valve faces on a bench grinder I marked a 45 degree mark on the tool rest and faced the valves on a 2004 caravan

I'm no pro engine builder, but when you clean up those holes for the head studs I believe you might want to use a bottom tap. Normal tap won't clean the threads all the way down. Hope this helps.

@Paul Rattenbury Big blockChevy head bolts go through to the water jacket. They are not blind holes regular tap is fine

My first motor was a 289 Ford, stock bottom end, stock heads (port matched) careful assembly and swap meet bolt-on parts (carb, intake, cam, headers). It was kinda mild but it had a lumpy idle, it acted kinda hot. I was mighty proud. My car would really scoot but I didn't race for real. Everybody thought it was fast.I was in that motor for $450 (back in 1977)

Good job! I love working on engines, especially the big block Chevy. Parts are very plentiful and fairly cheap compared to an LS engine. I really didn't know what a big block was capable of until I purchased my 1970 Chevelle SS 454 a few years back. OMG that car is the fastest I ever been in. It idles like stock but I don't know yet what they did to the internals, but the car is very fast. Original 512 block, GM 290 oval ports, GM iron intake, LS6 carb, headers, 4.10's. Love it. I suspect your engine N/A will make somewhere around 500 HP/ 500 TQ. With the turbos I don't even want to guess that. Be careful.

Yeah, you need to offer Official Sleeperdude, steel-toed flip flops in your merchandise.

When putting on the lower gear, you can cut a piece of exhaust pipe to fit around it, put a piece of wood on the outer end of the exhaust pipe and tap it in.

i spent $3,500 on a STI Subaru short block = $15, total - radiator starter altenator power steering all new - full rebuilt heads s/steel valves - all top shelf and alloy sump kit STI balancer big oil pump s/steel fuel braided hoses walbro pump and custom fuel pressure regulator .

Im old school and have many BBC vehicles currently. Including my #1 prize possession : 1969 Chevelle 427 COPO
#123 of 373 built.
#2 - 33 Ford Coupe 3- Window 3.5” Chop, Channeled, 33” tire on back, air Ride, 502 GM Performance short block, Polished Alum Heads, big Hyd Roller, 871 Blower, Dual Holley Sniper FI, 400 Turbo trans, 3,500 vert. A/C, Vac pump, power disc willwood brakes. Weld Aluma Stars double bead locks on rear 15” x 15” and 3.5” on front. This car has been driven to Bakersfield Ca & Knoxville Tn from Texas. Not one issue. Has Cadillac CTSV LEATHER Interior, Heated and a/c seats, it looks like an Outlaw Drag Car but it’s an Outlaw Pro Street. The Ole’ Gal’s name is
“SINISTER!” Has a pink parachute on it because without the factory style fuel tank, there is too much room in the back area to fill and looks funny. Even tho the tires are 66” tires across lol.
The parachute and wheelie bars took up just enough space to fill the gap.
With Blower Pulley’s one way it make 1,175 HP @ Flywheel and the other way, 680 HP. I have it on 680 Hp to drive it.
The reason I went thru all my life history (LOL), was to tell you that a little 6.0 Chevy SWB Truck with an 8” Drag Radial, busted my ass. Lol. He was a TUNER and had that lil truck on rails. Old stuff is cool but this new LS stuff is AMAZING!
You have some cool stuff , my starlet went 5.9@120 in the eighth with a 6.0 ls they are good engines but there is just something about a big block

Love watching you. And Ralph’y and the goats hahahaha I always use a old timey oil pump bottles with a little piece of rubber hose on the top so it will seal to the oil hole in the lifter and just simply pump the oil till it comes out the pushrod hole

Warm up the crank sprocket with your mapp gas torch just a couple hundred degrees 200-225 F will open it up to where you can slide it on by hand.

My Dad was a Tank mechanic in the army when he retired he would rebuild a motor in the back yard for $100 and beer/smokes. He had some 2x8s run across two trees and a come along with some huge chain he had to pull a motor. He used kerosene to clean everything and would usually do rebuild a motor in a week. This was back in the 70s and 80s.

I’m excited to see how this turns out.. I just bought a 1999 Chevy 3500 with a 7.4 in it but I could hear a knock when I got it running smooth and I noticed the crank wobbling a little bit so I’m sure the mains are shot. I just hope it’s salvageable. But it’s what I wanted; a dually crew cab big block so now I just have some more work to do lol. 👍

WONDERFUL knowledge...can you imagine, in 5 years, most everything will be EV and we will be working with electric motors...hard to believe for a baby boomer, I hope to be dead before my HEMI MOPAR is dead.....it's gonna be close....Rock on Rocky! This is awesome man. I'm doing a very a similar build except na! My budget build started with a brand new still in the crate LS6 454 I found in a barn. Of course I got carried away and ripped the stock heads, cam and intake off and replaced them with the same heads and intake you have but went with a roller cam setup. Hoping for around 700hp with my combo! Also scored a 78 cutlass all setup for drag racing from the same person in a storage unit! Stole them both 1900 bucks, lol. 🤣
