I disagree about Awanezumi being connected to Mew in any way. I always thought that Awanezumi (13:58) was an early Minccino because the foamy bubble motif makes me think of soap, which cleans things much like Minccino with its feather duster motif. Minccino and Awanezumi also share a similar body plan. It also seems to parallel Marill because its face resembles a water molecule.
7:46 If the smaller heads on beta Hydreigon are supposed to resemble missiles, that would explain why the ones on Iron Jugulis can be physically shot out and have an overall pointier appearence (although they act more like drones, since they come back to the body afterwards). The robot _does_ actually take inspiration from the beta concept, just not in the way people thought!
About Kyurem and the original dragon, there was a text archive in the leak talking about the main trio and Victini and for what it said it didn't sound like if the idea of an original dragon was there from the start. Kyurem had it's own thing going on, that was related to but still different to the other two, and there was no mention of it being incomplete. No clue if this is design is from before or after they came up with the original dragon tho, although it looks a lot more "alive" than the icy husk final Kyurem is meant to be
Fun fact: The natives of Hopkinsville, don’t even call them the Hopkinsville Hobgoblins, they call them the Kelly Little Green-Men. Source: Me. I’m from Hopkinsville and everyone calls them Kelly Little Green-Men. We even had a festival for them.
I think the beta desing of hydreigon may be intented to be the pokestar studios mascot, thats the reason why it looks like a tokusatsu monster costume and maybe it may be a reference to the adaptation of various tokusatsu shows in usa
The water mouse thing and the rocky dragon actually originate from a very early test of Gen 5's battle system and animations. They might have just been placeholder designs not intended for the final game, but who really knows.
With how different Kyurem is to its beta version, it really feels like Beta Kyurem was "too similar" The Original Dragon or (sadly) The Original Dragon and the Yellow Dragon were split. Other mons like Gurokken (possibly a Druddigon evo) are probably copyrighted as they're soon to be made real in some way.
I think it's still meant to be the yellow dragon. Lockstin drew attention to the Yellow gem on Kyurem's head and officially it has been a notable feature of it as back when the Kyurem movie was first releasing promotional artwork drew attention to the yellow gem on its head by having it glow, and that same gem does grow more noticeable in the forms. I think the yellow getting toned down is mor like what happened with Reshiram/Zekrom having their red and blue/green toned down from the beta, it's still there and a part of their concept, but simplified so it's not as on-the-nose and complex.
Although I don’t see Gurokken being a Druddigon evo, I would LOVE for Druddigon to get attention sometime soon. I’ve been waiting for the best boy to get an evolution or a Mega!
Btw I can't be the only one who thinks the mid and final evos look a whole lot like Marshtomp and Swampert, right? The mid evo is even a similar lighter shade of blue.
Okay, Imma throw out a theory here. Gurokken may in fact be a Turkey. Specifically Tom the Turkey in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Going off of the image since the sprite is apparently on lockdown, but if the rendition is faithful, it takes a lot of inspiration from the bird. Note the beak like mouth design, the fan shaped spines resembling a Turkey Plumage, the red plates in front to resemble a wattle, and a similar color scheme to the traditional representation of the turkey. Turkeys are native to North America, and its hard think of anything more American than Thanksgiving, espeically the parade, so why is it a Kaiju? My guess is that its trying to incorporate Kaiju elements to make the idea of a Parade Float Pokemon more recognizable to general audiences not in America since both Goji and Parade balloons are massive and drive through the city. Not to mention Pokemon has had a balloon in the parade pretty much every year since 1997. Also to help differentiate it legally from the actual Tom the Turkey. Its probably why it got cut, it wasnt legally distinct enough. I am willing to bet its a Dark type as well. The whole spiny fist and arms means someone gets scratched as it passes by. There have been several instances of thanksgiving parade floats popping during the parade due to passing something on the route to closely, and it looks like Gurokken is doing it on purpose! He's popping the other balloons, THAT FIEND! Finally, incorporating more monster, Kaiju Elements may help it play into both its inspiration, and its theoretical typing as the opposite of its muse. Turkeys are obviously hunted and farmed in droves for the Holiday, so this Turkey evolved to fight back, not content to be your holiday feast. In the Pokemon world, THIS TURKEY HUNTS YOU!
Honestly, I could see the snail-knight also serving as inspiration for the Chespin-line with its armor. Chestnaughts shield and in general the way the "armor" developes has a very similar vibe imo.
Honestly, i think gurokken has some design traits of a macuahuitl, or more known as an aztec sword. The rivets/blades along the side, as well as the colour of the arms is what gave me the idea. 11:37
18:00 keys were fairly important in b&w 2 with them unlocking after game stuff. Maybe originally Kyurem had a role in the key system. Or maybe keys were meant to play a more thematic role in the story but that got cut and just turned into the key system
Happy New Year (when it comes)! Thank you for another amazing year of amazing videos - you're definitely one of my comfort TH-camrs, and your passion for what you do always makes me feel more motivated to do the things I love, even when I'm worn out or feeling low
15:18 i was thinking the same thing that having the emblems is too on the nose however now that i think about it given that zekroms is pure white maybe those are supposed to represent the light stone and dark stone. Instead of being something that calls them maybe they were a physical part of them sort of like a core of their body. And of course this is assuming that the light stone would have called zekrom and the dark stone would have called reshiram furthering the yin yang stuff
14:22 Idk why but the tail in the back looks like a sperm cell. But if the pokemon was the opposite of a Mew ( Who looks like a fetus) then sperm cell could make sense. But thats just my theory. It also looks like it has headphones.
Why would that make sense? A Sperm Cell isn't the opposite of a Fetus, that would be the Egg Cell/Ovum. If anything, being a Sperm Cell would make it the Ancestor of Mew.
9:32 😍 those are awesome! I need these knight snails in my team, love them. I also appreciate Simisear more now, really like the fat design, had much personality
11:12 I’m glad he mentioned The Hopkinsville Goblin in relation to Sableye which is a nice nod to other American cryptids To me that other Pokémon could be something akin to the Flatwoods monster It wouldn’t be too far of a stretch either in my opinion, it has frills and big glowing eyes and may even have been planned as an evolution to Sableye But also because ‘Merica Yee Haw! 🤠 🦅 🇺🇸 (Sorry, I’m British and couldn’t resist 😔 )
Hijacking this comment: this Pokemon was found in the Gen 4 scratchpads in-between Magmortar & Porygon-Z. So it was probably a Sableye evo. I do like the more alien aesthetic they had for it. (Also fun fact: Mawile was also supposed to get an evo in Gen 3 before getting scrapped without a sprite)
8:17 I wonder if the snail paladin idea got split into the Goodra line and Chesnaught line? The mid-stage even resembles Quilladin a little, what with the horns (big quills) and awkward round body.
7:49 Hydreigon looks quite a bit like a Kikaiju (or Mecha Beast) from Mazinger Z. Makes sense as the final evolution of a line that's the cross between a dragon and a tanks.
I will say this about beta kyurem, it looks way more accurate to the lore of a dragon missing it's soul. it looks like it's more the corpse of a dragon getting pecked at by birds than an actual complete pokmon
the kaiju one whom I forget the name of could also have some extremely minor inspiration from Gamera, with the arms looking a little like flippers, and the head kinda looks like a sea turtle. Other than that it probably takes mostly inspiration from Jirahs
I posted a comment on it here that goes into more detail, but if the artist rendition is faithful to the sprite, I think its actually a Turkey, specifically a A Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon Turkey. It pulls a lot design wise from the bird, who is Native to North America, and the Thanksgiving Day Parade is the most American thing I can think of. Its probably incorporating Kaiju elements to bridge the idea to general audiences not in America, as both Godzilla and Parade Ballons are massive things moving through the heart of the city. I bet you its Dark type too. Parade Balloons have popped on route during the Holiday Parade before, and with all the spines, I bet you Gurokken is doing it on Purpose!
13:59 - 14:46 I heard the name "Awanezumi" and I immediately thought of Marill instead! You know, the Aqua _Mouse_ Pokémon that people thought was going to be a Pikachu clone before Pikaclones even existed? Awanezumi even looks like it could've been a Water-type Pikaclone.
10:33 its highly thought that thats a sableye evolution, whatever its name was replaced a "Lizargun" which at one point was going to be a Charizard/Charmeleon form that would've turned into a giant gun, its beta placement is in gen 4's dex under 503, aligning right next to the new pikemon that got evolutions a generation prior (honchcrow, Licklicky, Magmortar, Electricite, etc.)
Technically, a "black panther" can be a jaguar, tiger, lion, leopard, or snow leopard with melanism, as "panther" refers to Panthera, the genus those 5 (and other extinct cats) are in.
1:27 'u gawt any games awn ur fone?' 16:19 there is actually a fairly set pattern for the order in which all world languages invent new color words. The first ones are always black, white, and red, and the distinction between blue and green is almost always last.
What I also think is interesting in the final Reshiram and Zekrom design: if you but them back to back so their tails align, Zekrom's tail seems to fit in Reshiram's if there wouldn't be this smoke-resembling part of the engine-tail.
8:20 that could be the case, in one of the business documents from the teraleak it was said that black and white didn't do so well in Japan, and they had to reach a more global demographic so the plan was they were going to release pokemon in black and white, then more Pokemon in black and white 2, but they were told to move them to "project beauty" which was the codename for X and Y, they even asked if a T-Rex could fit in black and white 2, but were dismissed to move them into the next generation
Wait, the Theiran forms being tied to the 4 auspicious beasts, wouldn't that make the Disaster pokemon Wo-chien, Chi-yu, Chien-Pao, and Ting-lu apart of the evil counterparts on that side of the Chinese mythos?
Correct The Calamity Quartet are based on the 4 Perils The Forces of Nature's Therians Formes are the 4 Symbols And their Incarnate Formes are Kamis That's why they are in Unova (The OD/Kyurem is the Yellow Emperor/Void), and in Hisui (Origin Dialga/Palkia take the role in those games)
The Sableye one reminds me of a sagahin sea monster. It's very likely based on this, a Sableye but for sailors. Given the unusual anchor-like tattoo on its forearm and the Popeye like arm muscle. The headfins and fangs make it very sagahin-like. The body color and crystal eyes are likely meant to be Sableye. Likely a regional variant before regional variants were a thing.
with the way they have hydragon standing and the flat wings being level with the guns it reminds me of shielded artillery guns/cannons the wings are the shield and the arms are mounted machines guns and the main head is a cannon it's not perfect cause it's no shielding itself in any way but if some stood behind it looking over or under the wing giving commands
Gurokken looks like it couldve been Kommo-o if it were more based on an armadillo rather than tribal armor. A perfect fit for areas surrounding Driftveil and Nimbasa!
Another potentially interesting bit on proto Kyuren: the way the legs are shaped, especially the back ones, are rather reminiscent of Type Null, so maybe whoever designed the latter was going through some unused designs for inspiration
You missed a lot of beta gen 5 beta Pokémon. What was leaked was not just a single beta of Pokémon BW but a SVN repository which contains every change made to the source code with a log describing the change, including all the asset data not just code, which means you can build pretty much every beta of BW, if you count each revision as a beta version then there's about 40 thousand betas available to build and explore.
14:33 I'm not sure Awanezumi would be the progenitor from the west, mainly cause wasnt Mew originally found in South America, it feels weird if it was trying to be a counterpart to mew, it was likely a possible pikachu counterpart at some point but even that im not too sure on
I haven't seen discussion on how beta purloin has both a devils tail and angel wings (fun fact, some cats get hair knots on their backs which are commonly referred to as wings), but the angel aspect was removed in the final design. I makes me think that purloin might have been a split evo early on but they either decided against the idea or couldn't come up with a deign or concept that they were happy with
The Sableye looking guy feels like it may have been the Bouffalant to Sableye's Tauros, or y'know, like all the various other similar looking gen 5 Pokémon that are kinda regional variants before regional variants, would have been cool
Liepard's head (what we know today) kinda resembles to Doronjo of Doronbo Gang from the Yatterman series. Prob added layer to it being theif and fitting the Dark typing more the beta design.
ok I can't find the video again but I'm pretty sure that shelmet was a fake pokemon centro, the main one who posted information about the leak kinda just reposted everything that was in the original thread (which was a public thread) without checking, so multiple fake stuff got through edit : still can't find this video, it's basically someone talking about how a couple of fake "beta" spites they made got reposted by pokemon centro and spread around as part of the leak, I know there were fake "beta" trainer sprites ?? there was a tumblr post too If anyone has the person's name pls let me know I'm going insane here
The thing with the genies could be pretty interesting. Like if we got a legends Kyruem game or something with the original dragon. The genies could be its little minions or something. Then once it splits apart the four of them escape to hisui to try and run from their failure. And then it’s not until the events of BW1 that they finally return to Unova feeling the power of the dragons waking up again. The four of them end up having the capability to reform the dragon, not the DNA splicers.
Gurokken and Awanezumi were apparently just test dummy designs, never meant to be in the final game. They had very complex sprites with lots of moving parts, just like finalized sprites. Gurokken could have been made to test what a big Pokémon would look like in BW, possibly to know how much space they would occupy during double and triple battles. Awanezumi is small, so they probably used it for similar reasons.
Here's a thought, were the Snails an alternate take on the shell wielding idea that oshawott's line took? It's a 3 stage line too, and snails with shells makes more sense as an initial thought that a sea otter with a shell. It may have been the original starter idea, both designs being developed and oshawott ultimately chosen in the end.
I think it would be cool if Selmet and Karrablast had gotten their own evolution AND the trade evolution. Then it's basically one line that happens when they live peacefully long enough, and the other happens when they have a close predatory call.

The water mouse thing and the rocky dragon actually originate from a very early test of Gen 5's battle system and animations. They might have just been placeholder designs not intended for the final game, but who really knows.

The headfins and fangs make it very sagahin-like. The body color and crystal eyes are likely meant to be Sableye. Likely a regional variant before regional variants were a thing.
2:30 Dreadwing: *MINERS*
1:15 "So I won't be showing those ones - I'll be showing fanart of those ones instead!" This is one of many reasons why I love you Lockstin lmfaooo 🤣😂
Ohhh this oughta be good! Thanks for a great year, Lockstin!
2:35 the pokemans yarn for the mines 😂
11:44
The Kaiju beast is actually called "Garock". Gurokken is the scrappy-looking beige dog (at least one of the names for it).
with the way they have hydragon standing and the flat wings being level with the guns it reminds me of shielded artillery guns/cannons the wings are the shield and the arms are mounted machines guns and the main head is a cannon
it's not perfect cause it's no shielding itself in any way but if some stood behind it looking over or under the wing giving commands
Thanks for another great year of videos Lockstin! looking forward to more peak edutainment next year!!!
wish you a nice start in the next year 🥳
16:20 So it extra fits how Green and Blue are closely tied in Pokémon.
10:20 There was an cut Pokémon from Gen 2 that was also based off a flying fish
11:46 it could be a pre evo of sableye
I was thinking an evolution based on the Flatwoods Monster, it’s fitting given that Sableye is based off another American cryptid
1:45 Dude, that's just Homer Simpson
The first one even looks like Bart
You could totally mistake those snails at 09:06 as Mudkip Evolution variations.
4:37-4:40 "They tastes like vomit, but they keeps me regular. I'm like a soft-serve ice cream machine, in the morning."
Yesssss I've waited for this! Happy holidays and rest well!
The snail’s hat/chest-plate/shield strongly resembles the shell “door” that a lot of snails use for added protection.
Happy new year lockstin
12:17 you talking about godzilla and movies made me think: could it have been a pokestar studios mon? We have mecha tyranitar for it after all
Liepard's head (what we know today) kinda resembles to Doronjo of Doronbo Gang from the Yatterman series.
Prob added layer to it being theif and fitting the Dark typing more the beta design.
13:04 cobalian gives me zacian vibes with the no armor thing.
11:45 looks like he would say punch first ask questions later😂
2:00 Oh I thought it was Whitebeard
THE ONE PIECE IS REAL!
ok I can't find the video again but I'm pretty sure that shelmet was a fake
pokemon centro, the main one who posted information about the leak kinda just reposted everything that was in the original thread (which was a public thread) without checking, so multiple fake stuff got through
edit : still can't find this video, it's basically someone talking about how a couple of fake "beta" spites they made got reposted by pokemon centro and spread around as part of the leak, I know there were fake "beta" trainer sprites ?? there was a tumblr post too
If anyone has the person's name pls let me know I'm going insane here
The thing with the genies could be pretty interesting.
2:40 PROTO-EMOLGA JUMPSCARE!
I have to admit Proto-Kyurem looks cool, but as something separate from the Tao Trio.
Basculin is literally just the Bloods and the Crips but Pokémon
Gurokken and Awanezumi were apparently just test dummy designs, never meant to be in the final game. They had very complex sprites with lots of moving parts, just like finalized sprites.
Gurokken could have been made to test what a big Pokémon would look like in BW, possibly to know how much space they would occupy during double and triple battles. Awanezumi is small, so they probably used it for similar reasons.
I thought this video was a new pokemon Neo Getsis video, but I was sad when I saw it wasn't but still happy he posted
1:43 Eggman Conkeldurr
Here's a thought, were the Snails an alternate take on the shell wielding idea that oshawott's line took?
It's a 3 stage line too, and snails with shells makes more sense as an initial thought that a sea otter with a shell.
It may have been the original starter idea, both designs being developed and oshawott ultimately chosen in the end.
Beta Kyurem gives off some Kaiser Ghidorah vibes. Notably Kaiser Ghidorah did attempt to eat and absorb Godzilla in Final Wars.
That Cut Sableye/Beeheeyem I'll Call Yueffoh.
I think it would be cool if Selmet and Karrablast had gotten their own evolution AND the trade evolution. Then it's basically one line that happens when they live peacefully long enough, and the other happens when they have a close predatory call.
9:25 they were passin the blunt around huh
I genuinely think you nailed it on the head with the Kyurem Section. The original Dragon is Ryujin.
Zekron's design is a perfect invert of Reshiram's color pallet
I think the cut shielded snail evolved to become escavalier
I have stopped being Palpitoad, and my year improved.
