The notion that this one person can 'fix' and dominate everything, attracting so much projection of hope or despair is disturbing. Especially with someone who seems to have little interest in the actual work of governing beyond the attention it attracts to himself and the grifts he can create.

The US has had a problem with the concentration of power amongst the wealthy for a long time. We have also been removing guardrails to power and consolidating political power on the right. Historically, I would agree that US president's have had little direct impact on average Americans. Politics, in general, used to be much more moderate. However, this election could, and likely will, prove to be disastrous if Trump is able to achieve much of his policy objectives. The effects will likely have rather negative impacts outside the US, too.
*"Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights."* Thomas Jefferson to Richard Price, January 8, 1789
Good interview TY. But I have to say - it gives me the WILLEYS to hear someone else calmly say What I already think is true about Trump - Namely that Trump is purely transactional without regard to our long time friends and allys and alliances e.g. NATO; and that Trump *thinks* he can single handedly *personally* outfox Xi and Putin - a battle tested KGB officer highly skilled in handling useful idiots without them even knowing he did. So there seems to be a huge risk that Trump's huge ego and go it alone "John Wayne" attitude** could easily put him, and therefore us and our allys, at risk of having one or more blind spots that he can't see and refuses to acknowledge - and we already have an example of that when Trump ended the war in Afghanistan by de facto turning our allies over to the Taliban to be tortured and killed just so Trump could have his "deal" done in time for reelection. Btw It is NOT always helpful in international diplomacy, but I personally love the DUKE'S go it alone "John Wayne" attitude**, but like Clint Eastwood said "A man has got to know his limitations" but Trump does not. Can someone tell him "Teamwork makes the dream work" so hire ACTUALLY COMPETENT cabinet members please?
And these are the very one's expect to profit by a Trump administration. Watch them all howl when understanding begins to comprehend the truth that Trump is only in this for his own ego.

The current situation in UKR makes the strategy of slow walking aid and arms to it look ridiculous now. However, at the time it was understandable, as it did seem likely that if Putin were losing it would have resulted in a nuke retaliation, and the Russians have been dangling that possibility out there since the invasion. Biden factored all these concerns, including the problem that Russia had essential oil and gas leverage over Europe. Then, there's the Musk/Starlink factor. Yes, UKR got an essential communications network they could use that was impervious to Russian direct attacks, unlike cell towers, but Musk shut it down at key times and locations to prevent a runaway victory for the Ukrainians. Also, it's hard not to imagine that the network might be compromised in some way, noting how UKR's counter attack failed so miserably. Actually, the counter attack in the north worked well early on, presumably when Starlink was fresh. And then the invasion into Russia was handled with radio/communication silence, making it a total surprise. In any case, Trump/Musk are obviously conspiring right now, for good or ill, and I have my doubts it'll be to Ukraine's benefit. Trump, it seems, is determined to wreck our traditional alliances, and to generate new ones based around himself. Pulling out of NATO is probably the biggest geopolitical mistake conceivable. This is the kind of alliance that would be impossible to create from scratch now. The USA has a military presence all over the world at a fraction of the cost it would be to maintain one without the alliance. NATO gives America an enormous tool to promote our interests and security. But, Trump and his cadre are eager to just let it go, creating a power vacuum, which will be a huge gift to Putin. Unless Trump has some big surprise that nobody anticipates, we could certainly see the end of US hegemony, and probably a great reduction in US prosperity and influence, spelling the end of the US as the world's superpower. There's a reason so many GOP leaders came out and denounced Trump and voted for Harris, many of them. But, most people have no time or interest in even considering these global concerns. They're too busy worrying about immediate pocketbook issues, and the fears and anxieties amplified by FoxNews and the MAGA social media silo. So, the warnings go unheard. Would you hire someone where numerous people who worked with that guy said he was incompetent and a danger? No. But, American voters have. If I were an ally of the USA, I think I would prepare for the real possibility that the USA becomes completely unreliable. It's hard to know what is to come in the next 4 to ??? many years, but I think it's safe to say that normal operations are done.
Pretty well sums up my understanding. I've watched friends and neighbors vote against their own self interests my entire life. But, I didn't expect the whole country to be so gullible and easily conned. This one looks really bad.

Sanger is in the dishonorable tradition of not recognising agency in other parties than the US, China, and for some reason Russia. There is no reason why Ukraine, or the rest of Europe, will take a US-Russian fait accompli lying down. Europe is significantly more powerful than Russia, though it takes us a long time to go from peacetime to wartime production. And the closer the US gets to Russia, the closer we could get to China (within the constraint that we also need to support Japan, South Korea and Taiwan). A wedge between the US and Europe would be more valuable to the Chinese than Putin's failing regime is.

@@rockrecordreport7136 Ok so the court rules against Trump and he says he's doing it anyway then what? Its a joke to think Trump who has committed a multitude of crimes already will follow a court order.
Here in the UK, Trump has already altered attitudes toward America. He wants less American involvement in global events. Consequently, all European nations are now ramping up their armed services. Trump is motivated by selfish rather than idealistic objectives, which ultimately might be the best way of encouraging individual nations to form coalitions to deal with the security of their section of the global community.
Canada already put some people into a policy group to deal with the incoming administration. This just might spur Canadians to stop pandering the US and become more self-reliant. The incoming administration has two choices, stay with allied countries, or don't.
Fracturing broad alliances into regional coalitions seems like it could be potentially problematic and destabilizing. Whatever the case, I don't like the way things seem to be shaking out.

I'm not in USA but watching many commentaries what astonishes me is the focus on the Presidency as if it's an omnipotent autocracy Not part of a system of 'checks and balances'.

Good interview TY. But I have to say - it gives
me the WILLEYS to
hear someone else calmly say What I already think is true about Trump -
Namely that Trump is purely transactional without regard to our long time friends and allys and alliances e.g. NATO;
and that Trump *thinks* he can single handedly *personally* outfox Xi and Putin - a battle tested KGB officer highly skilled in handling useful idiots without them even knowing he did.
So there seems to be a huge risk that Trump's huge ego and go it alone "John Wayne" attitude** could easily put him, and therefore us and our allys, at risk of having one or more blind spots that he can't see
and refuses to acknowledge - and we already have an example of that when Trump ended the war in Afghanistan by de facto turning our allies over to the Taliban to be tortured and killed just so Trump could have his "deal" done in time for reelection.
Btw It is NOT always helpful in international diplomacy, but I personally love the DUKE'S go it alone "John Wayne" attitude**,
but like Clint Eastwood said "A man has got to know his limitations" but Trump does not. Can someone tell him
"Teamwork makes the dream work" so hire ACTUALLY COMPETENT cabinet members please?
Loyalty over competence. America just voted for higher prices and WW3. Its really mind boggling
It is truly shameful and embarassing that voters would ever give this man another term of being president. This won't go well.
I'd say "Won't go well" is putting it mildly.

Attention span on TH-cam is way too short for your essay. Most people won’t read it.

Ex ally has more to lose with his new strategy. Alliances without him are very much on the cards.
Do all people in power, live in their past.

Senator Sanders raised these and several other problems working families faced during his primary campaigns in 2016 and 2020. The Democratic Party leadership sidelined him and even tried to force him out of the 2016 primary (Clinton/Wasserman-Schultz), but they succeeded in forcing an early withdrawal in the strange 2020 primary campaign (Perez/Obama). The progressive movement was reduced to being "The Burney Bros". Even in this report, Sanders is not given credit for his contributions.
