The GW website actually crashed for a short time again this morning with the Empire pre-orders. certain stuff still spends a lot of time out of stock. I dont think interest has waned in a way that's going to ultimately impact the game loads. takes a while to pivot from something like their underestimation of demand at the start, as that does appear to have been way off the mark.
I'll be interested to see what they say in terms of the scope of whats next after the release of he High Elves, as this about when I'd expect them to have altered their plans and have something to say/show us/do in respect to those plans. One way or another they're running out of road with the first phase (for lack of a better term) of the Old World. By the end of 2025 I'd certainly predict that the 9 armies will all be out, but what then? Given how successful it has been I'd be suprised if it was just "ok, well we did the thing. thanks for the money. Bye!"

About numbers: LVO has had the numbers of participants to its tOW tournament increased 4 times, it’s now open for 100 ppl (although it is likely the actual tournament will settle around 80+ ppl in the end). Bear in mind WHFB was always weakest in North America. There are Countries in Europe where tOW is actually overcoming AoS numbers (Italy for one).

I was expecting a gameplay and rules edition review. Instead I got a look back on Old World release events as the review. Fair enough, but would have rather have heard thoughts on this edition and whether it's worth playing or picking up/investing in.

      Thanks for the feedback.
I had briefly thought about covering the state of the game one year in but, as its been asked for, will now push forward with getting it done. This week's video will be on New Year resolutions but expect something soon

in hindsight I think more transparency from GW would have softened some of the blows especially as no one really had any idea of what to expect support-wise from legacy rules to new plastic kits, returning models with very limited time windows to acquire and the arcane journal contents. This game has become too great an investment to expect people to be prepared for so many uncertainties and I don't feel that keeping everything secret until a month or less before release is beneficial in any way. This is something of a company wide issue but it particularly hurt TOW because the schedule has been so inconsistent.

With regards to your comment on tournaments, there have been an awful lot of 1 day events going on. I wonder if the volume of them dilutes the attendance overall (though you are right it’s no 40k). The main stat pages seem to only pick up those that use best coast pairing rather than other sites such as tourney keeper (let alone things like Triple Crown who held an early 50+ attendee event but record it all on excel!). There has definitely been lack of big 2 day GTs in comparison though a few have started to appear.
I do also wonder if using tournaments as a measure of success is a bit misleading as if the demographic of players is anything like myself, I’m at the stage of life that with children and work, it’s hard to attend them anymore.

I meant to add that I like the more bite size format of vids you do!

@@Knoffles Thanks for the feedback re bite sized stuff. Regarding tournaments, I agree its an imperfect metric. My local scene also seems to be quieter but of course that might be regional

You know, I’m not sure we can expect much more from GW. The assumption is that everything they do is according to some semi-nefarious plan, but I’m afraid that they’re actually still the bunch of bumbling nerds that so many of the old timers, that are doing interviews now, suggest.

They are all corporate now. It’s just sale numbers, a really terrible sales model too.
Source:me I worked for them from 2013-2018. Under Kirby it was just sales, even at the store level. Once Kirby took a back seat you saw the “Warhammer community team” which is really just a front. They really don’t care about the hobbyists. You can see it in the sculpts and the eavy metal painting team. The old heads have gone on to do other things.

I don’t think people want to attend tournaments of a broken game. I certainly don’t.

So you mention that GW didn’t expect TOW to be so large and they weren’t ready for it. So all your complaints basically boil down to that. Production is planned put years in advance, they can’t just change production in less than a year.
I guess I’m old, but the younger generation seems to love being upset. You do realize as a Gen-Z I can tell you no Warhammer Fantasy released more than two armies a year and they don’t release rules for all the armies at once. Was this perfect? No. But arguing that it wasn’t perfect when it’s still better than any release in the game’s history makes me wonder about you younger generations.

    • @returntotheoldworld
      @returntotheoldworld  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Might I suggest you don't make assumptions about people's age and experiences. I've been playing Warhammer since before you were born, if you really are Gen Z.
The GW of today is a totally different beast from the one that existed in the early days of the internet when there was a shift in relying on White Dwarf for information. A big issue in the early 2000's was that it didn't communicate with its customer base. It does now. As things have changed GW can, and should be, held to a different standard. Are things better, sure, perfect and immune from criticism, no.

@ So… all I’m going to say is that there is a review, a critique and a rant. I can name off ten great things about the release this year. I’m back in a hobby I drop 10 years ago. Fantasy is back and if I let the “Prefect” ruin the “Good” I am never going to happy. I was expecting three armies to be released year, we got more than three. I got two ebooks and I have the rules for every single army!! Ahhh, yes please. I mean I am happy when I think about how I’m painting my orcs again and their rules play balanced with most of the armies. Yes, please.
So there’s some delays. Still a fast year of releases. Sucks I still can’t get the Black Orc Boss because he’s been sold out for months. I had my old Grimgor anyways. The good out way the bad for me. So I give it a 7 out of 10 for year one. Not perfect and can be improved. But it went way better than I thought it would go.
