Questions.....
1. How often do you have to replace the main haul line? And what does that cost?
2. do you sharpen hooks in the off season or just replace them?
3. Do you buy bait or catch your own?
4. How much fuel do you go through on a typical day fishing?
5. How many different seasons do you fish? What species do you target?
You guys have been doing this a long time, you make it look so easy, you are a well oiled machine....there is almost this zen like quality watching you work together.....

So I see you toss the carcass and heads/tails but I have had good luck with those parts - seems like some fish have big mouths!!! Bob in Nevada
The tails I probably could lop off and use, but the heads would quickly fill the tub. We've seen quite a few arrow tooth heads come up with a halibut on the hook. (the head was still on the gangion)

Thanks once again, guys. Looks like a beautiful day on the water. I am a bit puzzled, though. At about 45m03s-45m05s, you stop the reel. Blind as I am, I see two fish, and hear the comment, " . . . we try and do our best to give this stuff back . . . " So, is there something else on the line, or something that I'm not recognizing? Not being a fisherman, or familiar with many of the species of fish you can't keep or that have no market for sale, I recognize a few - halibut, cod, the occasional octopus and of course the parade of nuisance sharks/dogfish that go right back, & so on. Not a big deal, but curiosity has finally gotten the better of me, & I figured I'd ask about what I'm apparently missing. In any event, it's enjoyable to see how you work as a team, steadily and with as little wasted motion as possible. Many thanks for posting these. Be careful out there.
Hi Jim. We were hung up on an old crab pot. You can see a loop of line right when the cod come out of the water. I think I was talking about doing our best to bring lost gear/ garbage back in with us, but sometimes it's too heavy or unsafe to haul aboard. This was the case on this occasion as Matt reaches down with knife in hand and cuts it loose. At 45:16 you can see it faintly covered with barnacles just under the surface. @@EISAlaska Many thanks for that info. I've learned a few things I'd wasn't aware of, and for me learning some new things all in one day is a bonus, as far as I'm concerned. You people always take looking after the resource seriously, which to me is a good thing, and one not always seen. My dad, an old-style outfitter/guide often told us that we should try to leave any place we went undisturbed, or better than we'd found it. There were times we'd come across some really odd "left-behind" gear - some of it brand new. I don't understand that mindset, so it's nice to see the idea being carried on by a younger generation. Thank you for your interesting and helpful reply. Best of luck with the halibut, rockfish & cod, and (although I know you don't go in for "drama fishing") please be careful out there. Cheers!
Thank you Jim. Your father was wise and a true outdoorsman. Some folks view us as greedy and wasteful with no care about the future, only immediate profit and gain. That is a ridiculous mind set, as vessels, gear and permits are expensive and paid for over the course of decades. We know our future is with the next years bounty and the season after that, hopefully for many decades to come. The same holds true for our children, and we wish and hope they have the same opportunity to do what they love.

I could sit and watch your videos all day, just love it! Matt, was that skate wings you were cutting up along with the pollack and cod and octopus or was it Humbolt squid? BTW I enjoy watching the fish come up from the depths the best camera view.
Nah, not skate wings. Actually it was a giant squid. Our friend at our processor rounded us up some free bait, 4 bags of the stuff.
With out refrigerator a lot of the smaller boats start out with fresh bait . they take some of that fresh bait and brine it it will give them a extra week to 10 days . salted bait they always have that stuff on the boat as long as it stays dry its good for a long time

Cool stuff - we use the same gear down here in SE Alaska on a much smaller scale for subsistence sets - 30 hooks max then down to 15 hooks no power hauling June - Sept..
Yah that be good putting camera out the back, I were there, I would spend more time trying to see what was commkng up the line, lol. Starring down in the water.

I also like the fact your boat is so adaptable I'm curious do get better results with fresh bait or with frozen bait when your fishing for halibut? You are all a credit to the fishing industry.! I do have a question though, could you sometime explain the function of each piece of gear you deploy. Maybe a diagram showing what each long line is doing in the water.

I have never seen anybody so efficient in his movements and work as Matt. Dad is good, don't get me wrong, but matt is a machine! Satisfying to watch! I notice you attach the hooks two over two under. Just habit or is there a method?
Hey, Fishin! Nope, there no reason except that is the way the snap ends up in my hand. I used to flip 'em to where my thumb ends up on the top of the snap, but don't really need to with our snaps since they aren't that high tension.

We usually don't need to sharpen them. Some of them could use some love though, noticed a few busted tips this year.

Its washed out after its been soaking, so it won't put out much of a scent trail if we used it again.

So how do you get the line to sink to the bottom of the ocean
The line is weighted with a small amount of lead - it is in the weave. That way if the have to cut the gear it does not float and they do not have to add weight along the line but sometimes some folks do, there is an anchor at either end and the line is stretched out that way. Sand fleas can rob the bait or eat a whole fish if left on the hook too long. for sport fishing we are encouraged to not fish right on the bottom, they tell us that halibut have eyes to look up so it is OK. We are restricted on rock fish, especially Yellow Eye and incidental catch is likely not very survival able despite the required release device. Bob in Nevada

They are Dexter sanisafe 8". Great knives!

Nah, easier to edit videos without background music, you have to be careful of copyright strikes. The TH-cam detection system is pretty robust.

When your pulling the line in are you also backing down on it or just have the wheel pulling the boat back?
The reel pulls the boat back and we also put the boat in gear when there is a lot of tension on the line from wind and tide.

Around 250-300 per set.

I’m pretty sure the sharks have no commercial value, but would a recreational fisherman keep them to eat?
Probably not locals, since cod and rockfish are pretty plentiful. I wouldn't put it past an easterner to cut one up for dinner though!
You have probably answered this many times but how often do you sharpen your bait knife? Love the content, as soon as the new one comes out I'm on it!
I sharpen is after every 50 lbs or so of bait, just a quick hone on the sharpening stone.

Nah, just standard atlas gloves. As long as you stay busy your fingers stay warm.

The levelwind chain and sprockets is looking a little dry.
After watching your videos for a while I have noticed that when your hauling your line in, as you remove the hook from the line if there is still bait on the hook, you pull it and toss it overboard. What about the bait makes it unusable? Would it not be cost effective to reuse bait that has not been destroyed or chewed on?
The oils and scent in most bait gets washed out and it will also sour quickly after it has been fished. Octopus holds up well though and can be reused.
Question for you. Have you ever had Killer Whales or Pilot Whales take fish off your long line as you bring it in? Seems like that would be a bad day on the water!
Luckily not where we fish. We've heard of a lot of whale predation down toward the south end of the island, and out west.

How many fish does it take to bait your line?
How does the leader clip onto the main line? Seems like there would be some slippage? Also, why are the leaders/hooks came up so twisted this time around?
The tension on the snaps is enough to grip the grooves on the line. The hooks twist up like that when we pull against the current and when we have higher tension on the line. Some times are worse than others, its kind of annoying, lol.

When you’re both unhooking fish is there a way to stop the reel?
Yep, there are two ways, the spool valve at the stern rail, and an emergency shutoff at the reel.

How are you going to mount your line weel on the new boat?
We haven't worked that out quite yet. For now we'll just be fishing halibut on the Fish Tale.

I'm shocked the fish or the birds are not after the bate that you drop off the hooks
I unbait then and chuck the bait close to the boat where the birds are too skittish to fly. They can be kind of annoying, so no use encouraging them, lol.

How deep were you when you caught the black cod ??
I have never caught one here in less than 600 feet...so far.

I think we were in the 60 fathom range there, sometimes they come up on the edge.

Why not put the old bait from the hooks into a tub and dump them into your crabbing area to help your catch to increase in size.
Was that an old crab pot? Didn't see it clearly just heard you talking about something?
Yes it was. We try to haul that junk back to town when we can but it was to crusty and heavy to try to bring onboard.

Anywhere from 75-100 meters on this trip.
