Indycars (CART) at Long Beach, 1988..but *really* different this time.

- I found another one from Univision! For folks that haven't seen my Spanish language upload from Detroit '89, here's the TL;DR. My local ABC affiliate often preempted Indycar racing. But I had cable, and Univision was on basic here, because Atlanta.
I really don't think this one was 'en vivo', because it's so much shorter than other videos of this race other folks have uploaded. But I have to admit..it's probably the only way I got to see it back then.
Jessi moves to 'pit reporter'. I don't recognize the 'play-by-play' guy, but can't help but notice Fangio II doing 'color commentary'.
A bit of coverage of the Pro-Celeb..Willie T. says he's gonna cheat!
Al Jr. gets a pretty good jump, Galles is probably happy they have him back. Teo's Porsche needs an early push start (I actually miss the days when we corner workers were allowed to do stuff like that).
Another example of how motor racing is an International Sport: Emmo speaks Spanish! None of the Brazilians I know who aren't racing fans would ever even try to learn that language.
Al Jr. and Danny dice for a bit, and then Mario finds some speed.
Later on, Mario's out. Lil' Al gets by Danny, but the pass is before the FCY. Running around the truck is also before the FCY, Al extended the lead shortly before that. Foreshadow of 'things to come'.
And Bobby Ray comes home second with a Judd in the back. Followed by Cogan in the Machinists' Union car. Not bad for a privateer, IMO.
Cool stuff in the commercials..Mario memorizes a few Spanish words to sell some kind of oil additive. Seems like Polaroid has a contest to send some lucky Latino people in the US to go watch "Sabado Gigante" in person.
Only clue I have about that weird '20th Century Stories' thing with Capone, etc. is that I know there are times when nobody wants to buy commercial time in a telecast. In TV, we call it "fill".
1988 was certainly a banner year for Indycars/CART: Danny Sullivan, 3 Andrettis: Michael, Mario and John, Al Unser Jr, Bobby Rahal, Emmo, Rick Mears, Raul Boesel, AJ Foyt, Arie Luyendyk, Teo Fabi, Scott Pruett, and the list goes on. We really were spoiled then.
Muchas gracias por el video 👍. "Little" Al , dominante . Ahí estaba Jorge Koechlin , como decía él , un hermano peruano . Juan Manuelito Fangio ya se empezaba a quedar pelado
I am pretty sure I saw a pre-race segment during the Indy 500 a few years ago where I saw a certain 4-time race winner from Brazil speaking Spanish, so It does happen.... 🙂🙂🙂😉
OK, I did some research. Jorge Koechlin is the guy that I didn't know on the broadcast team. He's actually from Peru! FF, F3, and some kind of weird series in the UK with obsolete F1 cars. Yeah, Wiki's not always accurate..but it seems he's still working on media coverage of Latino drivers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Koechlin
He used to comment the CART races on ESPN from 1990 to 2001
A great commentarist!
gran recuerdo para el piloto peruano
Another jewel from your channel buddy, and in my language, thanks man! By the way Jorge was an extraordinary commentator for espn latinamerica, then for speed channel Latin, well today espn don't give a Damm about indycars or motor racing, and Jorge unfortunately is not working on the big channels (ESPN, Fox Sports), I hope he can come-back.
RIP Chespirito

"Haha! Let's go out and party, to a nice dancefloor! Some, haha! Some pretty girls, some bottles of champagne!"
The master of engine Mario Ilien who built and still building greatest engine, for Chevy or Mercedes Benz, for Formula one or IndyCar, simply the best in business
Never knew they covered IndyCar, a few years ago, they got the broadcasting rights from F1.
Cuando Univision era Univision ahora es pura porquería
