    I was at this race in the pits helping with the #55 bob sobey pontiac entry...our biggest thrill was the seamingly amount of cheers bob got at driver introductions for being sponsored by Harley-Davidson. Way more than even paul newman recieved! Those were great days to be involved in trans-am racing!

    I remember this weekend distinctly. I was working as an pit lane official for CART and when Dan crashed, they called "all hands" out on the track to clean up the mess (there was fluid and body parts everywhere). When we got to Dan's car. I thought it was an RX7 or a Nissan -- there just wasn't much of a car left. Without seeing the SCCA accident investigation results, my thought is something broke while he was running flat out and the car just turned into the wall and hit a TON! I didn't hear that it was a fatal accident until after the Indy Car race, when I was at the airport waiting for my flight home. Even if you don't know the driver, a fatal when you're working on track ALWAYS hits like a kick in the gut!

    Great video! You forgot about how Stuck would load the engine by riding the brakes in the corners with the throttle still down to keep the car on boost, which would give the car much greater mid range out of the corners

    SCCA should've kept the spirit of "modified-stock" in mind when it rebooted the Trans-Am series. Many of the cars fielded were the equivalent of today's NASCAR entries: a composite body loosely resembling the make's chosen model hung over a fully custom, race-bred tube frame chassis and mechanicals.

    The Audi had an 5 cylinder engine, not an four cylinder engine as they said in the video :)

    • @brianbirc
      @brianbirc ปีที่แล้ว

      a 5 cylinder ? adid not knw they existed 4,6,8,&10 are the only I have heard much of But when I only knew of single cylinder 2 stroke dirt bikes . I foud a 3 cylinder 750cc 2stroke 750 street bike and I bought it. The HI&H2 Kauwisaki 750cc triples were fast as could be at the time at 55-65 mph just drop into 3rd and no clutch in the powerband would wheelie away! 3 heads 3pistons 3 carbs and 3 pipes. like an RD 4oo that was known as Radical death the 750cc tripple is known as The Widowmaker. The audi having allwheel drive is a big plus for fast cornering . In a fullsize Bronco I built for a off road vehicle I could build alot of myself saving some money. With the Ford TTB I plated and gusseted for more strength and rebuilt my Radius arms to beams atronger up and lower atatchement on the arjms to the beamsand a vertical piece that is welded to the top & bottom of tjose plates making them like one piece . I drilled a hole in it and tapped the beam to run a big grade 8 bolt into the beam making another conection to to each beam to help It is able to do very well in rocks and sand and fast over the whoops very smoot in controll. With gears and lockers front and back I often only use 2wheel drive on slippery terrain fast in 4wheel drive on flat roads I can gas it hard through the whole corner and out it pulls me around the corner insted of drifting it! It ads some safe control and faster speed for sure.

    What a pity the other American teams all threw tantrums over the whole 1988 season, which resulted in more engine restrictions and weight penalties for the Audi. Which was the only car in the whole field to be constructed from a factory shell, had only 5 cylinders & less horsepower than every other competitor. It’s advantage was not just quattro, but good old fashioned GERMAN engineering which made the Americans look like idiots. No surprises the following year the Audis were banned.

    • @turnpiketumbler8938
      @turnpiketumbler8938 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's interesting that the Merkur XR4i's won every race barring one, in the previous season. No real tantrum there. I think Merkur's were European Ford's, that were sold on the American market. Was it that two European cars, that were looked down upon by their American competitors. Rinsed the competition two years in a row. Or was it simply superior German technology, that caused them to ban the Audi's?

      fuel slosh. when hard braking and turning with low fuel, the fuel will slosh away from the pickup tube in the tank. think of the last sip from fast food cup with a straw . car almost stopped after the turns (fuel slosh) when the car straightened out after the turn it took off again. he was running on fumes.

      Less rules and restrictions in gto. The roush 4 cyl 2.5 merkur here had around 650 hp, an then in gto, 1300 hp in qualifying, in the thunderbird body. Here in that race, they restricted the audi and merkur (added weight, limited boost, smaller width tires...) because they were too fast.
