  • It seems like when you travel these days there’s either nothing healthy or if you find something healthy it’s really expensive! Also since Covid, airlines are no longer providing meals for free and you’re having to spend money on a meal that’s going to be subpar and not satisfying or even healthy. In this video I’m going to show you how I meal prep a couple of things so that I have some healthy options on the plane Without adding a lot of extra bulk to your carry-on bag!

    I bought a small heater element I can set in my stainless steel mug to heat water.. It needs a plug but takes seconds. I found a curling iron silicon cover to store it in. I have a trip coming up and I have a 4 hour layover. So now I can make oatmeal, soup, instant coffee.

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Excellent! I love having that hearing element! Especially if I’m staying at a friends house and I decide I want a hot cup of tea or soup late at night. I don’t feel like I have to go rummaging in the kitchen to get hot water I can stay in my room and heat water up and make my own tea right in my room!

    • @jbloveday9538
      @jbloveday9538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes we often used the immersion heater a lot when we travelled overseas. I wanted to buy one in Italy and didn’t know what it was called, so using my Italian dictionary I asked for “something to boil water in a cup”. The guy in the shop knew exactly what I wanted and opened a cupboard full of them! 😊

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jbloveday9538 that’s great! I think when you travel overseas you start to realize that not every hotel room is like a U.S. hotel room. Sometimes you don’t have anything to make a cup of coffee. Oh you noticed the coffee maker is disgusting. That little thing doesn’t take up much space but it can provide you really hot water when you need it for a cup of tea, coffee, or soup or just getting some hot water to use your wash cloths and clean up.

    I don't think I've seen food on an airplane since the 70's. LOL My family has a tradition of stopping at Subway for footlongs on the way to the airport.
    We have the same dehydrator! Even if you don't have a fresh garden to pick from, you can put frozen vegetables right in your dehydrator. I'm a pumpkin spice person, and pureed pumpkin dehydrates really well. Also, check out the True Lemon brand, they also have lime, orange, grapefruit, etc. I make virgin mojitos (I call them No-jitos) with True Lime, mint, sugar, and water.
    You can also make your own "backpacking-style" foods. Cooked pasta, cooked rice, cooked beans, all dry & rehydrate really well. You just don't want fats because they don't dry, you need a freeze-dryer for those. I've even been able to dry my chili.
    My grandmother had crazy high blood pressure (1970's) so she did some rather "unique" things when cooking that I just enjoyed. One of them was boiling ground beef. Mixing water with ground beef will actually absorb into the meat, making the fat separate easier. I like using this method when working with kids, because if you bring it to a boil, you know that it's all evenly cooked and higher than the minimum safe temperature of 165 F. Drain the water, the fat goes with it, then you can season your meat. Also, if you like leaner meats like turkey, buffalo, etc, you can cook it through without it getting dry.
    That method will allow you to dehydrate meals like spaghetti Bolognese and chili. You can throw your dehydrated meals into your suitcase so you can have a good meal with absolutely minimal when you get where you're going, take of the bra and kick off the shoes.

    Thank you for the great ideas. I always have a water filter bottle for cold water and a thermos for hot water. I got a couple of the green bags on your recommendation, and although I haven't flown since the pandemic, I have found them useful on numerous occasions. As I write this, Vancouver airport here in Canada is full of exhausted travellers who have, in some cases, been there for days. A very packed flight was delayed, and everyone was stuck on the tarmac in their seats for 15 hours - passengers said there was no food in all that time, and they were only allowed a couple of tiny cups of water each in all that time. Because you never know what will happen when you fly, especially at this time of year, I always make sure I have 5 days worth of lifeboat rations in my 'plus one' carry on in addition to any snacks I might have packed for my flight. Those things can be a lifesaver if food runs out and you end up stuck somewhere you weren't expecting. "Survival tabs" are easy to eat, come in smaller packs, and can fit into tiny empty corners of your bag. I also pack a few Millennium Bars and Soldier Fuel bars.

I am up in Ontario, my mother lives nearly 4,000 km away on Vancouver Island, and we are both facing environmental conditions that make it pretty much impossible, and certainly not safe, to leave our respective homes. A very good friend of mine turned me on to a product called true lemon packets, which is a dehydrated lemon powder that you can mix with a little water to use like lemon juice that you can add to your arsenal of things on your longer trips to keep you fruits from oxidizing or have a little lemon in your water or tea... Hi there! First of all I’m so happy you were able to find my channel and have found some great content! I do have a container garden and it is on a drip system. So it gets watered every other day automatically. For my indoor plants I just make sure I give them a good watering before I go and if I’m only gone for two weeks then I’m not too worried about it. If I have smaller plants that require water a little more frequently then I’ll put them all into a pan and put some water in the bottom the pan so they can soak it up from the bottom. I have tried a couple of the watering systems like type where you put a bottle on top of it and let it water but it turns to either 1. Not give enough liquid or 2. Everything comes out all at once into the plant. If I’m going to be longer than two weeks I have been blessed to be able to have my parents stay at my house and take care of my indoor plants.

    I love this video! I was wondering if you might be able to do a video on what to take for longer term like hurricane evacuation. We usually have time to prepare. I live in Florida and live in an RV. We had to evacuate this week to my daughter's house. We had sooo much stuff for food that was heavy! I'm vegetarian and brought lots of fresh stuff. I don't want to do that again. Your ideas would have been amazing. I didn't know exactly how long we would be there so I planned for a week. As it turns out it was only 3 days and thankfully all is well for our area. Prayers and love to all that were not so fortunate. ❤️

      Hi Robinson, first I want to say I’m sorry that you had to be evacuated but I’m so happy you and your family are safe from the hurricane! What’s incredible is because of that and some other things that have been happening here in California that is actually the video I’m making right now! I feel like you and I are so much on the same wavelength with this right now!
      I think a lot of people underestimate being prepared to evacuate their home so I am going to make a video on that and it’ll probably be a couple of videos because one will be having a bug out bag and one will be having your car prepared and one will be what you would need to have in your garage for a longer-term shelter in place. Really appreciate your feedback and again I’m so happy you guys are safe!

      Hi Marlene! that collagen soup is very tasty and very good for you! Since you don’t have a garden or dehydrator there a couple of options. First you could buy a dehydrator which I would recommend having if you have room in your place because you can buy frozen vegetables and place them right into the dehydrator and they will be dehydrated overnight and you can put them in mason jars or mylar packages and keep them for emergencies as well! The second option is to go ahead and purchase dehydrated food from a place like Amazon and then mix up your own. Those mylar bags from Amazon are great because they come in several sizes and I can use the larger sizes to pack large amounts of dehydrated food from my emergency kit and then I use the smaller ones for my travel. However I do have a friend whose son is highly allergic to peanuts and when he flies they have to alert the airline ahead of time and then the airline will remove peanuts. That being said the airlines cannot control the people won’t bring things like peanut butter, pretzel stuffed with peanut butter, peanut butter crackers, peanut butter cookies or other related peanut snacks so it’s really up to the individual of the allergy to make sure that they wear something like an N 95 mask to prevent them from a reaction. I personally will ask the people seeing on either side of me if it would bother them if I had peanut butter. If they were to say yes then I just would not mix it up and that is the beauty of having powdered peanut butter with you is that I can mix it up once I get to my hotel or Airbnb and still have a snack. 🙂

      I have to disagree. An N95 will not protect against all peanut allergies, so I think as responsible travelers, we do have to take our fellow travelers’ health into consideration. No one needs an emergency landing due to avoidable anaphylactic shock.

      @@chelsabrinkman417 I'm sorry. I travel a lot and I cannot take everyone's health issues into consideration when I am getting on an airplane. Or wear your HazMat suit if you're out in public. Perhaps you should suggest that the gift shops not sell Peanut M & Ms or Peanut Butter cookies.

      The container for the apples and carrots is actually a hardware container. Seals well enough for this but I wouldn’t put any liquid in it per se. The little dividers are removable so you could take them all out and put something larger in or just a range of how you want them. Note that they are not a food safe container but I feel that since I’m not keeping anything in there for very long I’m not that concerned about it. I appreciate the concept and application, but I find that simple things like even just reaching down to my personal item at my feet itself is sometimes just a chore. Managing a whole food ritual inflight would be unimaginable to me - and frankly, with the volume resulting, not worth my time. I am a "volume eater" and those little tiny amounts would be just enough to tick me off considering the effort needed. LOL. I do carry things that I can eat quickly if I need a boost; trail mix or crackers tend to fit that bill. Otherwise, I'll eat what's provided if there anything. I fast for periods of time, so I'll use the flight time as a time to do that and just not worry about needing to eat anything at all apart from a quick grab n go while my seat-mate is up. Plus, I'm not a fan of hauling around things that become dead weight to me. I'd rather pack two sets of disposable cutlery / chopsticks and toss as I go. My pre-flight and during flight protocol involves not eating in general as I don't like having anything in my gut to make me bloaty. Sorry to be so blunt - but I hate having a gas bubble in my colon begging to be free. Emptying out the whole system and keeping it empty until I get to the ground is usually the better way for me. Now....coffee on the other hand......

      @TheoryofSimple  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jonathan, and thank you so much for your feedback! Yes, everyone is different with how they pack and these are just suggestions. I used to be a volume eater but I found that due to that I had fatty liver disease and needed to try to control my blood sugar and blood pressure. I also practice ia bit and fasting so for many flights I don’t eat anything, but I always bring some snacks in case like you’ve seen a couple of my other videos, I was stuck for 36 hours and was happy I had some thing with me to eat since by the time we got to the airport in Albuquerque everything was closed and it was too late to get anything from the hotel. I like to carry my own cutlery and sometimes my food containers because they are used during my trip and I really am trying to get away from single use plastics. But I do agree with caring deadweight. If it’s something you really aren’t going to use, you definitely should not be carrying any extra weight. I know especially for men and taller people that there’s just no leg room on those plans so if you can get any sort of space to get your feet underneath the seat in front of you that is more important for your comfort😊❤️🙏 and about your frankness with the gas bubble! You’ll see in this community that we are all very frank and I think most of us are at the age where we just know that it’s OK to talk about these things you’ll probably hear some weird things come out of my mouth in the videos🤣😂

    I always observe fellow passengers on board flights. Most people are not preppers so they bought food from coffee shops and diners in airport or from flight attendants. • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it comes down to a few things and it may be that people don’t know how to prep it could be that they don’t want to because it’s just not in their wheelhouse. I think people who fly a lot and have experience some issues while flying tend to be more prepped for their trip. When I pack my bag to fit under my seat I always think about what I actually need on the flight and then Kohl’s and things that I may need if they lose my luggage or for some reason like bad weather you are stuck in an airport without your check luggage and you just want to be comfortable and safe. Here in Hawaii you can get bentos from 7 11 or other okazuya places Zippy’s is easier. People who are not from here will say where can we get that
    And they say next time they will buy. it’s never offended anyone. It even comes with one takuan which can be smelly.
    As for the person who got irritated with the family that had onion bagels and could smell their breath. How bout you maybe your scalp smells or your breath or your clothes are you perfect.
    Really if they were on a four seater how did you smell them from across or front or back
    You must have bloodhound nose. Cause I don’t know if there are any five seaters
    Ok strong perfume yes I can understand they are not allowed on nurses at hospitals. And I remember back in 80 Giorgio was awful smell to me
    But that’s life. Glad in hospitals nurses cannot wear strong perfume or cologne
    But we will be more aware of like strong perfume stink sneezing farting toe jams but we cannot please everyone that’s life and reality
    Someone maybe pregnant can’t stand smell or have chemo and nauseous or just not feeling welll
    So best to bring mask and maybe hoodie to cover head that should help
    And portable fan to deflect smells. And maybe have mints gum or something to ward off smell so you only smell what you chew.
