As a person with health issues, this was extremely helpful. I travel for work on occasion, and I always pack my own snacks. It allows me to know exactly what I am eating, without getting in the doctor's doghouse. Also, I always pack things I know I will eat, not things I hope to eat. If you don't eat something on a regular basis, you won't eat it on a plane either.

For the sandwich tip, I'd also add: replace bread for tortilla. Smaller, lighter and I'm not the biggest fan of bread so it's basicly not getting in the way of the literal meat of sandwich.

For car trips, packing chicken or egg salad and Hawaiian rolls works great. The salads don't take up much room in a cooler and combined with the rolls makes them easy to eat while driving.

Peanut butter pretzels are on my list no matter where I'm going or what activities my trip entrails. Protein, carbs, and salt, with no mess, and I like that I can eat exactly as many as I want rather than having to deal with the leftover half of a messy bar.

My new favorite snack for traveling is roasted lentils or chickpeas. I love the brand Seapoint Farms for the lentils--their Pink Himalayan Salt Lentils are terrific and not too salty. They keep well, don't smoosh in the bag, and provide a nice gf and vegan protein source.

If you can or willing, I bring a small 12 ounce insulated camelbak and I also bring tea bags and that way I have a hot drink on flights or on the trip. This also works great to if you bring instant oatmeal or instant miso, you can make them in the small insulated cup

Airplane hot water is often contaminated with ecoli. I carry a large stainless steel sealable cup that I get filled in the airport with hot water before the flight departs. I then use that to make my tea with my tea bags in a cup I get from the FA. It could also be used on for Ramen as well. Remember that water on a plane is not pure and is not boiled but only heated.

not tsa friendly, but road trip friendly - get a soft cooler like the yeti flip 12. I frequently drive through horrible food deserts where the only options are disgusting fast food (hardees, wendys, mcdonalds, etc.) or buying processed chips/sugary drinks at overpriced gas stations. packing some deli sandwiches, a couple hummus cups, some fruit, and some sparkling water saves me a ton of money.

Airline in-flight meals must be one of the few areas of life where things have actually got worse over time. I think meals on flights in the 1970’s and ‘80’s was better than it is now. Bringing your own meal is a way better idea. Also, having just done a flight to the UK and back last week, take your own plastic utensils. The wooden knife, fork and spoon drive my mouth and tastebuds crazy, even worse than when the doctor uses a tongue depressor. I can’t stand using them.
