  • RAF Odiham is home to the UK Chinook Force and the Royal Air Force Chinook Display Team. During the coronavirus pandemic, the Hampshire base's helicopters have continued flying, maintaining their flying programme and stepping up to assist in the COVID-19 response. Last month, we went to Odiham to meet the personnel who keep the aircraft flying.

    I did 12 years on Chinooks at Odiham, left in 2001. No beards or safety helmets back then, just green denim overalls with so much oil on them they were waterproof. lol

      WTF, I am so glad I got out in 2003, It is just wrong, RAF personnel with facial hair is just not the way it should be, I am just an old timer with different perspective and values, or old git I suppose.

    Tried and true engineering marvel. Always impressed when they swooped like some huge insect to drop or pick up troops in Afghanistan.

    Love the Chinook (shi-nook), didn't have the chance to work on it though. I was at Odiham from 1971-73, on 72 Sqdn with the Wessex HC2, then on to 18 Sqdn at Gutersloh, also Wessex, got out in 1976 & left for Canada. From 1983-86 worked on the Kiowa with the Canadian Armed Forces (Air Reserve).

    Miss seeing them now living in Ceredigion, use to see them with landrover lightweights slung underneath quite often where I was bought up in Crondall. Only see them now if there are exercise's going on in the hills.

    I live on the Isle of Wight where you get the occasional spitfire or cessna flying over, but every so often you hear the Roar of a chinook or sometimes a Merlin.

    What’s with the beards

    • @JammyDodger45
      @JammyDodger45 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well when men don't scrape their faces with a really sharp piece of metal the hair that grows gets longer and longer until it forms a beard.
      I hope that helps.
