Thank you so much for your content, after making knives a couple years I have a lot of respect for makers who grind freehand, especially without texturing on the blade to hide grind lines.
Free hand grinding…. You actually have to eyeball where each of your grind lines go… the plunge, to the tip… to the same height on each side. I’m not knocking anyone’s process of getting the job done, but most new knife makers, and people wanting to get started in the craft, would be totally in awe watching an old school knife maker grinding a blade with nothing more than a single/full speed 2x72 grinder and his hands.
You can't talk too much if you're doing an informative video. I'm glad to see someone else grind bevel down I thought I was the only one. I can't even take a leak left handed more or less grind a bevel😂 great video lm glad to see you making more
I’ve learned a lot from you over the last years.. Today I spied the belt holders and grit organization you manage. I bet I make some of those soon. I dig your new shop space. You laid it out for work flow really nice. Merry Christmas from Oregon.
Merry Christmas buddy!!!! Just fyi, you have been a HUGE influence in my life for the last couple of years now:::::))))))) have a wonderful holiday break::)!)!)!)
Love the new shop.. I’m just starting to try to free hand grind. I’ve used a jig with good results but I’ve always wanted to do one free hand start to finish. You look very comfortable doing free hand. With your comment about still having to focus and pay attention even after all the knives you have free handed makes me realize that I’ve got a lot to learn still. Great video and as always very informative and helpful. Go bucks and good luck against Bama 👍😂🏈
Hey bro, really nice video. Thanks for your time and explainig... but what dou you mean... use brand new fresh belts for grinding... you mean use new belt for for each other nife? Thank you
Great info. It helped me realize I am on the right path and that it is my 1x30 costing me most of my time. The more passes you have to take the easier it is to be off I guess. Once I upgrade to a 2x72 my bevels will be done in less passes and should start to look cleaner at the transition to flat. Also thanks for reminding to just put on a new belt already!
Thank you! I agree with the others that you can't talk too much. Your videos are great and are a confidence builder for me, just getting into this craft.
I've only recently started making a few knives, found your channel and sub'd. Great content that is well explained. I wonder if you might share some thoughts on heat treating the 01 for the file guide? Many thanks.
Matt i just realiazed your in your new shop huge congrats it looks amazing im jelous i have a 10x20 building that is totally full lol thank you for the awesome grinding tips im having problems keeping the edge the same thickness at choil and tip always thicker so i need to adjust my pressure a little more then? what do you recommend final thickness on your average hunting knife thickness prior to secondary bevel? Merry XMAS Mark
Great video! Jerry Hossom told me he grinds edge down, or rather finishes with edge down to actually see the bevel line, course that is a different grind altogether, I've tried edge up . . . it's so so, someone once told me "One snow flake don't make a blizzard" so gonna keep trying it! Love the grind progression discussion! I learned beveling from Mike Stuart of Ekim knives videos and then practice/ practice!
I'm just learning... I've been experimenting with edge trailing and edge leading. I find myself more confident edge trailing and seem to be getting more consistent bevel. Not sure because I'm just learning to ancor my arms and finding my comfortable stance in front of the grinder... is one better?
When you're pulling the knife across the belt, do you keep the knife horizontal the whole time, or do you tilt the handle upwards when you are getting closer to the tip? I hope that made sense.

It’s something I’m seeing less and less unfortunately
It’s not actually freehand grinding when any type of jig is used.

Awesome thank you for the feedback!
Hello, friend! Doing hand-held descents is cool! And I'm slowly starting to make folding knives! Good luck and I'm waiting for new videos!
Very cool! Thank you for watching!

01 heat treats really easy even with just a forge and canola oil 👊
Great video, you also have a merry Christmas of the bevel😂
lol you too!
Another great video Mat. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Thank you!
Thank you for the knowledge
Thank you for watching!!!

I’d go around .15 at the edge! And yes it’s all about the pressure!
I learned a lot!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great tips!
Thank you!!
Great video, thanks.
Thank you for watching!

What grit did you go to on the flats before you started the bevels?
220
Outstanding
Thank you!!!

Edge up you get a cleaver bevel with less belt slap on the top line
What your thought on flat vs hollow grinds?
Man I love a good hollow grind.
Mat who does your water jet service? Thanks
Water jet knives on Instagram
When you're pulling the knife across the belt, do you keep the knife horizontal the whole time, or do you tilt the handle upwards when you are getting closer to the tip? I hope that made sense.
Just slightly depending on how you want your bevel to look
thx. keep doing what ur doing. personally i like when you explain a lot@@gentrycustomknives8008
Need the link for the grinding jig.

Was the knife heaymt treated already?
Heat*
Yes
No cooling?
I have a bucket I’m dipping in next to the grinder
Is the knife in an annealed state or is it tempered before the grinding process, love the videos, thanks from ireland!
Says he made 98 of them at one minute.... says he has ground a MILLION of them at 5 minutes. WHAT IS IT?!?!? HUH?!?!? 98 or A MILLION!?!?!? ;)
Somewhere in the middle lol
