Forgot where exactly I saw it but it was another channel on TH-cam that suggested loading up a surface conditioning belt with wd-40. It produces a very clean satin finish and could help with rust if you are grinding high carbon steel
Great video as usual. Thanks for all the info. Two questions: Are you beveling after heat treat? Also how do you heel the blade from chattering or catching on the belt? I’m having some issues with that right now when I’m grinding, especially with higher grit belts. Thanks!
Matt great video what do you recomend to pratice with? should i make a bunch of mild steel blanks id ok grinding but am a long way from perfect your bevels are so clean and crisp ,also i find it hard to keep edge the same thickness thanks Mark Congrats on your new land cant wait to see it all come together for you and your family
WHAT!!!!!!! NO HAND SANDING!!!!!!! Why would you want to skip every knife makers favorite part!!!!!! 🤣😂 Great video as always
Lol 👊👊👊
I love those trizac belts.
Man so do I. So great
Thanks for sharing you knowledge and giving good tips, I learned all I know about knifemaking on youtube and this type of videos helps a lot!!
Well that’s awesome to hear! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the tips my man!
No problem! 👊👊
I'm only getting into knives, awesome info on the belt progressions & the tape idea.
Glad to help!!! Thanks for watching!
Great video for beginners and intermediate knife makers. About what thickness is the blank for that size blade before you start your grinds?
Normally around .125-.140, and thank you for watching!
great knowledge
Great information. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
Thanks a bunch!! Great info as usual! Like others, I need to learn free hand grinding!!
Well hopefully the video helps !!
I just learned recently. Getting better but it ain’t easy. But I never hand sand. I can’t stand all the time.
I haven't tried the surface conditioning belts yet, i use a cork belt with wd40 and get a fine finish
I need to try one of those!

I’ve tried that and don’t like it. I might be doing it wrong though lol
@@gentrycustomknives8008 probably just comes down to preference! Beautiful work regardless
Awesome! Great job as usual!
Thank you!
What's the benefit of a full flat grind for the user ? and thanks for the tips !
I feel they are just a little more “slicey” I like it for skinning knives

Yes I do my bevels after heat treat and what belts are you using when you get chatter?
Do they work on CPM REX121?
I’d think so
@@gentrycustomknives8008 So you haven't tried it yet?
I finally tested it. And they don't work.
I may have missed this so I will ask, do you ever do any bevel work pre heat treat, either stainless or CS
I don’t unless it’s one I’m doing a hamon on.
I was just about to email you and ask exactly about your process since I just bought a 2x72…so thanks! No WD40 on the surface conditioning belts?
No wd40 for me! Congratulations on the new grinder!
@@gentrycustomknives8008 can I ask why no WD, what does it do that you dislike sir
Nice. Thanks for sharing 👍
👊👊👊
Do you heat treat before you flat grind?
Yes I do

I’d recommend buying some 1075 and make knives out of that for practice! That way if it turns out you’ve still got a good blade!
@@gentrycustomknives8008 thanks will do matt im ok on grinder but not like you some day maybe
Great video. I am a fairly new maker and use a jig, watching people free hand and get such consistent bevels...sigh!
It definitely takes a little practice !! Let me know if you have any questions!
I know this is kind of old but why are your blades oily? Is it to keep them from rusting? And what lube do you put on them?
Correct, I use rem oil
I too have a problem with rust. Mostly because of humidity. I just bought some strikehold. I’ll look into the rem oil.
Thanks
How did you learn to knifemaking?
