Rare Wooden Ore Car Still Rolling On The Tracks And Artifact Filled Cabin -Tribute To Miner Roy Ladd

- We follow the footsteps of miner Roy Ladd, to many of his hand dug mines, and to one that has the wooden ore car still intact and in working condition. There is also a steel ore car and a beautiful wooden skip car in the mine. After going through the mine we hiked to Roy's favorite cabin to see how he lived and the things he left behind.
Roy was a quiet, hardworking man, with exceptional mechanical skills, who mined this area extensively on numerous mining claims. He was a bit of a hermit and until he got to know you was somewhat reserved. He stayed in many different locations throughout these mountains.
He served in the military in WW2 as a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. His entire crew was killed on a mission, but, luckily for him, he was on a different plane at that time.
He drove a Chevy roadster through the mountains to some of the claims he worked. Supposedly, he had two transmissions in the Chevy, one reversed to achieve suitable gearing for crawling up the steep hills.
He took work as a mechanic during the winter months when it was too cold to be high in the mountains working his claims.
We had a great time getting to know a few things about the man who worked so hard building these mines. It's very rare in the mine exploring world to know much, if anything, about the individuals who actually worked a particular mine. To see Roy's tools and equipment, and to hear some of his backstory, is truly special for us.

Nice video! My wife and I met Roy Ladd back in the early 70's. He was very proud to show us his old car collection in the sheds. I was born and raised in Mina and my dad worked a lot of the mines around the area and knew Roy. My family moved away from Mina in 1964. We used to travel back to Mina every year for vacation and happened to run into Roy while out exploring. This video brings back a lot of happy memories!

Was Mina a busy place when you lived there? I've passed through a couple times on motorcycle rides, one of those running out of fuel and waiting hours at that truck stop for fuel late at night.

@@chillislives as a young kid it seemed like a huge city to me lol! Maximum population of about 300 people when we lived there. It had a two room school, grades one through six, and a library. Several bars and a few restaurants and three gas stations! The Southern Pacific railroad still came to town a couple of times a week. Seemed real busy to me!

Hi Tom & Julie, I love watching explores of abandoned mines but it always adds a more personal touch to the video when you can see who the miner was and what he achieved in his life. That wooden ore cart was just stunning to see, I'm very happy that it's survived and is out of the weather, the cabin was cool to look through seeing all of his knickknacks. He must have put a lot of hard work in making the tunnel and winze as well as laying the track and that's without all of the pushing heavy ore carts to the outside, wow he certainly worked hard during his life, R.I.P Roy.

Yes, very fun to see Roy's face and get some of his back story. The wooden ore car is really great to see. What a survivor that is. His cabin is neat, too. Hi Tom & Julie thanks you for another great adventure i liked seeing those old ore carts and lots interesting artefacts ie, pots and pans etc I wish all mine explores were like you and only take photo's instead of thieving wheels of carts and other old and interesting memorabilia just so they can put them in the front garden or a personal museum where only a limited amount of people can see them compared to hundreds of thousands on TH-cam thank you again Pete

Hello Tom and Julie. Great video. I love the pictures of Roy and that old 36 Packard. And that picture of him with his flaying buddies in front of that old B17. Those Flaying Fortresses were such a great bomber in it's day. I've seen footage of those planes landing with almost all their tail shot off yet bought all those guy back safely. Boeing knew how to build them, that's for sure. My stepdad was a B17 bombardier and fly many missions over Germany. He said after he'd drop the bombs he'd take one of the side guys that stock out the front end. I bet Roy had a hard life up there with that mine. He was a tough man that's for sure. Anyway you too look great. Julie's a tough woman that's for sure. Tell her she's looking very healthy. Take care always. Look forward to your next adventure.

Made me happy, and sad to see his life's work. The mine was quite amazing, the cabin falling into disrepair, a bit sad. The bit of history at the beginning was sweet. Thank you for the tour.

I like that red color on the steel ore cart. Julie did a nice demonstration of both carts! Those assorted drill bits was a nice display. Looks like that mine has a lot of character to it. It’s nice that you were able to tie the mine to Mr. Ladd.

Those hand drill bits were all in a pile and I was arranging them by length to see if they were all there and it looked like a full set. Glad that you liked Julie's operating demonstration. Wow, that old wooden cart had it all. The red one, I see it as a tricked out roadster of ore carts. Those wheels! Angled spokes and all they're missing is chrome. 😎🤘🏻

I really enjoy the skip car and miner Winze. It was perfect for one miner or with a helper. And that pipe, cable roller, genius. I noticed the flat metal, hammered in to support the windlass hole. And the whole set of drills!
How awesome you found his cabin and put up all those artifacts. I haven't seen usable enamel ware like that for years. An amazing adventure. Tops for artifacts! That hatchet/hammer was incredible.
Roy Ladd seems exactly like 3 of my Mom's brothers. Mechanics in WWII. One for the air force, but just their vehicles. I think one of them was closer to the fighting. I should have asked him when I was younger. They don't talk about though do they? I've a shoulder patch from one of them. I've never looked it up. I'm going to very soon. Two of them went out to California a lot in the 50s and 60s, I never found out why? My Mom probably doesn't know. She was a teen through the 50s.

What a great story!! I used to own & operate a 40acre placer claim "AA Bonanza Creek Mining" here 114 miles north of Fairbanks near Central, AK back breaking work chopping ice and moving boulders to dredge and high bank sluice for the yellow stuff. I can only imagine how hard Roy worked on those claims, kudos to him and thanks for the story...

That was too cool you guys. I would love to have met Roy, he looks like quite the character, and he had very interesting toys. Very nice Ore Carts and the red steel one looked like it was riveted. Knob and Tube wiring, and square nails make it seem older than it should be. I presume he must have had a winch to get the Ore Cars up and down that grade on the tracks. I think that is the first time I have seen rails done like that, and I watch way too many mine exploration videos. Have you guys seen this before?
That was quite the cabin. The wind noise was audible, bu it didn't detract from the video or your commentary. A very interesting explore.
Yes, Roy must have been quite a character. The winze was a little steep for regular rails. I'm not sure what he powered the winch with. The frame for it was there to the side of the winze.

hands down this is my all time favorite video i think i know the location so when im out that way ill stop by and look around , how cool is that wooden ore cart , i have only seen 1 and it was disassembled and tipped over ..
This is definitely a fun one to find. I won't spoil your search for it by telling you where it is because finding it is half the fun. Please protect the mine and cars by keeping the location to yourself if you find it.

That looked like a fun place to explore, I note the rock was pretty fractured down the winze, if the wheels had been left on the cart someone would have pushed it down the hole, IMHO it's good the y were gone. thanks Tom and Julie.

Maybe someone already commented on the letters on the bucket but I believe they stand for USQMC is United States Quartermaster Marine Corps. In the service the Quartermaster is the supplier of most military needs. For example is you needed new boots or bedding, you would have been directed to the Quartermaster. Love your videos and I agree, she does dress up those barren tunnels!

This is a famous mine! Justin at TVR Exploration documented this old wooden ore cart years ago, and other people documented it even before Justin did. It makes me really happy this mine has never been plundered, so keep the faith and DO NOT reveal its location! We wouldn't want to see these old ore carts as the centerpiece of somebody's rock garden in Lagina Hills, would we?
Not really sure how famous this mine is. I have photos of the wooden car from about the year 2000. The Velvet Rocket was there a few years ago. There were a few names of visitors at the cabin.
Who's watching over the old mine sites?
Abandoned mines on federal property are theoretically protected by the Antiquities Act. Otherwise, the remoteness of their location is about all. Patented mines are a different story. They are protected by Smith and Wesson. Thanks for the comment, Kevin!

How would they bend the rails ? That was a really twisty drift.
They usually used a rail bender, similar to a pipe bender. Maybe they could put the rail in a tree crotch and bend them that way, too. Thanks for the comment, William!
What kind of handheld flashlights do you use? Are they rechargeable? What size batteries? Thank you for your very interesting mine videos.
Hi Jeanne, we both use a Coast brand rechargeable LED as our main hand held flashlight. Julie has a XP11R and I have a little older HP10R if I remember correctly. I don't know if they even make the older one anymore. They come with an extra battery and are quite durable. I've dropped mine at least three times down shafts that I was coming up and it has not broken. They both have adjustable lenses to go from flood to spot.

Its pretty interesting how many of these mines look like one day everyone showed up, the boss says, "We ain't making any money here, let all go home" and no one came back.
That's correct. Many times as the price of the different commodities went up and down, mines would close and reopen again, when there were profits to be made. Other times when an ore body was played out it was cheaper to leave the old equipment behind and move on versus moving old equipment to another mine. Thanks for commenting, Jessica!👍

Maybe if you and "others" hadn't created such a well-worn trail by visiting this site for many years, the items wouldn't have been stolen. This makes about as much sense as information in my video leading to the missing items. How about the hundreds of offroaders and hikers that have combed the hills for years or the Australian mining company that currently controls the whole area? Maybe some of them are the culprits.
