    That Julie goes up the mountain like a mtn goat!. Sometimes you must take it easy on the woman on a hike but Julie presses on no problem! She is brave walking on that trestle! Tom may be the boss but Julie is the star!

    The side dump car at the bottom is not part of the truck up in the mine, as its a swivel dump truck. i worked that mine back in the early 1990s and i am the one that hauled the gas engine and elevator winch up to the top of the tram.
    We gave up using the too and fro tram and used the elevator winch to haul one of the tram buckets up and down the tram cable.
    The name of the mine is the Gold Spur mine, and you missed one tunnel about 75 feet above the canyon floor.
    i worked the mine on top for about 3 months before i climbed up the small canyon from the main canyon and found a tunnel that was started to run under the ore body and followed a 4 foot wide clay seam. a flash flood had removed the dump because it was mostly fine clay. Up in the main mine, i drilled one hole into the stope and hit a pocket of pure iron pyrite that rained glitter like pyrite down on me.
    In the early 1990s there was a nice road to the camp at the bottom of the tram and i drove a car to the camp with no problem.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for adding all that information, I really appreciate it. I didn't think that side dump car at the bottom would have had a swivel like that one inside the mine. I saw what looked like the box from the truck that is in the mine way down below in the canyon below. Someone must have sent it off the edge. The tram operates as I suspected, just the one bucket up and back. How did you manage to get the engine and tranny up there? If I ever get back there I'll look for the lower working. Thanks again for the comment!👍👍

    them " Old Timers " were tough as nails .... beautiful arial gravity tram ....wow the Bull wheel alone would be hard to get up there with Teamsters ....pretty beefy gauge track ...that track gauge is just like the one we use in the drift mine ..definitely oxidizing sulfides in hat limonite ...imagine the work it took to make the trestle ....Atlas has been around for a while ...gas that thing up and fire it up....another fun explore ...love them old mines with everything still there ....be safe out there

Reminded me of when a friend and I gone on a hike in the Badlands of South Dakota, after about two miles, realized we were in a canyon or wash and the sides to steep to climb and if it rained, maybe miles away, we could be in big trouble and better turn around. I was glad to see it was a sunny day there. Merry Christmas.

    Hi Tom and Julie. That engine and Transmission is an L series engine possibly an L1600 built from around 1967-1978 Most likely in the US from a Datsun 510 Sedan. If you figure Datsun car bodies didn't last very long in those days, your probably looking at that mine being in operation as late as the mid 70s to mid 80s.

    Awesome explore. The mine cart truck you found in the mine actually wasn't to the side dumper at the bottom. Rather, some idiots rolled the box from that truck off the top trestle back in the 70 or 80s. You can still see it down in the gulley.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I figured that was a different ore car base than what the side dumper used. I saw the box you mentioned down in the wash below, but it's way too steep to get down there. Thanks for your input, it makes the video better!👍👍

    Tram and ore tram bucket definitely old school, thirties and forties. That datsun engine and trans from a later period, someone came back in the eighties and reworked it when gold prices went up. A lot of time and energy went into that place, looks like the ore body played out pretty quickly though. Probably not a lot of profit made on that venture.

      I think you're spot on with the analysis. I would guess it was first worked before the 30's even. By the time the tram was put in around the 30's and the 70's engine obviously from a later operator. Thanks for your input, Ivan. Much appreciated!👍👍

    Hello Tom and Julie, Very interesting. It's obviously an old mine that was reworked in the '90's or later. Seems like it was still Datsun in the '80's. I'm guessing that the later operation used only one tram bucket and the winch ran it up and down. All of the air hose and fittings looked fairly new. Wheelbarrow did not look very old. Oh, 12# rail. Thanks for the tour.

    . Interesting explore again. Thanks. Can you imagine combining newer engine and mining techniques with the antique tram way? Bet there were some pinched fingers and lots of cussing to get it going and keep it going. Lots of payroll spent getting miners in and out of that location, no place for a camp by the mine was there? So wonderful we can follow you athletes and see all the sights. Take care.

    For awhile cables and tram cars were all the rage - I guess they made sense when the ore was high grade enough, but later it was cheaper to blast in a road and either haul ore by truck or dig an adir, whichever was cheaper. Must have been neat to see those big trams in action....

    The bins and tram system is probably as complete as any could be? I tried to consider how many tram cars they used to fill the triple bin? Then, thinking of the mule train wagons loaded for processing. I wonder where they chose to process. The history is interesting, even though we don't know for this? Maybe you or Julie read something?

    Thanks for your usual detailed video and stills of the mine and equipment. Quite an interesting operation and looks like it was worked in the 1970's. I was hoping a geologist watching would chime in on the greyish mineral inside the mine. The dark reddish mineralization usually is associated with gold, but it looks like something else was present also.

      You're welcome. David. The engine looks to be early 70's although I'm certain the mine was started much earlier than that. It is unbelievable that man was able to overcome completely inhospitable places into working, money making ventures. To be able to assemble trams at such extreme angles. At Cerro Gordo that tram over there goes on and on over canyon after canyon bringing buckets of ore way up in the air to trucks or processing plants way down below. It's cool that this guy worked at a mine and is able to explain EXACTLY what is what and how it works. neat.
