1890's Miners Camp And Colorful Mineral Vein At The Perseverance Mine

  • We make a return visit to the Perseverance Mine and rappel down the vertical shaft to see what we can find. It's an interesting working on another colorful mineral vein.
    This was a lead/silver mine that operated in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We also visited the miners camp to find only one of the original three cabins still standing. The cabins are from approximately 1910. There was at one time a five stamp mill here, as well.
    Here is the link to our first explore of this mine:

      Thanks for the geologic assessment, Jeff. It's always more fun going down than it is jugging back up the rope. There is supposed to be another 60 feet of shaft there. I didn't show it but there was a plug in the shaft about 15 feet below where we got off the rope with a dead deer laying on top of the plug. It wasn't pretty. Hope you have a golden shiny new year with a few fat nuggets in your pocket. Thanks for smashing the like button, too. We'll see you somewhere on down the line.

      Happy New Year!! Great explore! Would have loved to find out just where all the sediment was coming from. Or maybe it was just on occasion with just the right conditions. Too bad the last section was plugged up. Thanks for the hard climb out but you two took us on another Awesome explore!👍

      @@beepseatsfindingfoodtreasu8756 We would have liked to get down to the lowest level to see it, too. Not to be. The shaft is reported to be 165 feet deep with 4 levels. Water runs right into the mine through another opening from a wash that's above the area. Glad that you enjoyed the explore. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year to you!

    0:52 Could be a Maxwell House Instant Coffee jar from the 1960s. The other jar could be syrup, or cooking oil. The difference between a jar and a bottle is the size of the opening. A jar has a wide opening, typically the same size as the jar itself. A bottle has a smaller opening which makes it easier to pour liquids or small solids.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I was thinking about the jar. Another person thought it might be Tang jar. Same with the bottle, I thought syrup, but some others thought it was cooking oil. Thanks for your input, Duck. See you next year!

    Hello Tom and Julie, you know I remember that bottle in the middle. I think from the 1970's. I did a google search and it looks like a Crisco Brown oil bottle. Looks like it was around from 1959-1967. Hmm I don't think I would remember that as I was only 4 in 1967. Maybe my great grandmother had one because I do remember it. Great video.

    Hi Tom & Julie, first off Happy new year to you both, I hope you both have an amazing safe, healthy and happy 2022 and pickles too of course.
    I think what makes one a jar and the other a bottle is that a bottle has a neck where as a jar doesn't. I would hazard a guess and say the jar was for coffee.

    For pits less than 100 feet this works really well : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munter_hitch Great way to start 2022 underground with Tom and Julie, thanks for taking along on your adventures.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. William. While a Munter hitch does work for rappelling or belaying it puts twists in the rope. This is something one would use in a pinch if another device failed. Also, when jugging up a line, we need a progress capture device to hold the upward progress we make when climbing out of the shaft. A Munter hitch is handy to know about though, as is the clove hitch, which is similar to the Munter and something we use very often. Thanks for your input and a very Happy New Year to you!

    • @williamglaser6577
      @williamglaser6577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomandJulieMineExploring I have used the Munter hitch many times on short drops, we use PMI rope which is a static rope ment for caving, I have not seen any rope damage from doing that. It is used for cuick easy decents only. For accending I use a Rope Walker system. Everyone needs to have their own gear and technique and be so well practiced that you can do it safely without having to think about it, so if you are injured or exausted you can still do it safely and easiely. I am not suggesting that you should change how you do things. Just remembering how I used to drop short pits. I have dropped pits as deep as 1.100 feet in free fall, but that requires very different gear.

    This is a nice mine you found. Loved all the different minerals and the color they provided. That rock formation at 28:30 into the video was gorgeous. You called it Tom when you said it was a piece of art. The stopes were really interesting and it was cool how Julie was walking on those tracks bent around the corner in the air over that pastel slope at 16:50. Chasing the source of the water in the mine added to the adventure. Who knew you were a hydrologist. Was wondering why you used only one atrea on your rope ascender? With two you put your weight on one while lifting your other leg. Just curious. Anyway film and narration was excellent as always. Stay safe you two, Rik

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rik, we're glad that you enjoyed this one. It is a fun mine to explore with beautiful mineral veins. That was cool to see Julie walking the tracks over that stope, which seemed to just be hanging in thin air. There is a regular creek running through this one at times, judging from the washouts. There are many ways to ascend a rope. The only way I know of to use both legs is the frogger style. That technique uses two foot ascenders and usually a chest ascender like Petzl Croll. It is probably easier to climb than the style we use except the change over from rappelling to ascending is more difficult, and it also requires one to carry more gear overall. Any way you do it, jugging up a rope can be extremely difficult. I had a tough time earlier this year when I was 180' down a huge shaft and couldn't touch any of the sides of the shaft, which helps to stabilize yourself. I was spinning in circles and not having much fun. Thanks for the comment. We appreciate you!👍😁

    How in the heck did that dead animal get to that drift? You know what couple would be fun to see you explore with? Frank and Sharon from Canada. You’re all good on the ropes and I think, all about the same ages. Cept for you Tom, I think you’d get the old man award..lol. Another fun explore. Oh, did you see any pick marks, being that’s an old mine? Hope you had fun over the holidays. Well, see you next time and stay safe. Thanks, T&J!

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where the dead animal was is below the opening to a wash. Water flows freely into the mine so not hard for an animal to fall in there. We're always up for exploring with just about anyone. I'll take the old man award...I've earned it! I don't recall seeing any pick marks. We had a good time over the holidays and hope you did, too. Thanks for watching, Ralph!

    I was listening to a video on how to change an Acorn stair glide the other day. I thought I recognized that voice and sure enough it was Tom.
    Do you fix them for a living or just did yours? I've been paralyzed for the last 30 year's and have one in my house.
    Love your video's. It would be good to get all the mine video guy's together and explore some mine someday. Each adds a little different aspect to min exploration.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a funny coincidence. I don't fix them for a living, but I am kind if a handyman. That Acorn repair has been a good video for me. I have several "how to" videos besides our mine exploration videos. It would be fun to get all the mine explorers together, although it might create mass confusion. Thanks for the fun comment and hope all is well in your world despite being paralyzed. Keep in touch please!

      We both carry a fair amount of gear. She carries a camera, extra clothing, small emergency tarp, food, water and batteries. A gun, folding shovel, 2 flashlights, stiff hair comb(for removing cacti parts from your body) first aid kit, paper map and a GPS. I carry similar items except in lieu of the shovel, first aid kit and GPS I have four lights and other videoing equipment. If we are on ropes then we each have a climbing harness and a bag of climbing hardware. Thanks for asking. I'm sure I'm forgetting some small things like a pen and paper, short lengths of light rope for securing flashlights and cameras so they don't end up at the bottom of the shaft and a multi tool.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring

      We don't really look for gold or silver. There is definitely gold in some of the mill tailing piles. The recovery rate was as low as 60% at times, which means 40% of the gold that was pulled from the mine still sits in a big pile. Happy New Year!

    did you really just bring some old jars from home and put them on the trail to look more authentic? lol I doubt anyone is going to believe that glass has made it 100 years in the open on a well worn trail.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The glass looks to be from the 60's. If I was going to salt the video I think I could do a better job than that. It looks like someone had rounded them up from the area and left them there.
