Long term review of my 2013 BMW 328i X-Drive. Questions answered: 1. What is an F30? 2. What are some common issues/quirks with the F30? 3. What should you own one?
Thank you for your insight. I just got an 2012 F30 a couple of months ago and am trying to soak up and learn everything I can (first time owner). While I had to put money into immediately when I first got it, I do still love the ride! and plan to keep up on the maintenance.
I just traded in my 2013 F30 328i 2 days ago with 115000 miles on it. Like he mentioned I had to do valve cover gasket and water pump. (They do them same time because they’re same area). 900$. I never had timing chain issues. They check its condition when doing the valve cover. I did brake fluid when the system told me every 24k miles or so. Regular oil changes. I also had the oily smoke when starting and had to do the turbo oil return valve pipe thing. That was the only other expensive thing. If it has the base tires they’re pretty affordable and the bmw dealership was actually really cheap to replace them. Absolutely loved that car. Just got a 2018 320i and so happy
@@Businessblend yes same - had to replace Valve cover, ended up getting a coolant flush, and went ahead and replaced all tires. Couple weeks later car ran hot and had to replace defective coolant pump (or container something to that effect). Just got oil change. But has been running fine since!
Re: bit about having other vehicles alongside your F30: I too have had a 2013 and 2017 Ford Fusion (1st was a Titanium, 2nd SEL 2.0 AWD) and two F-150's. I LOVE how the car just fits. Seating position, bolstering, height etc. Been an awesome car for me (2015 328i xDrive Luxury Line). Did all of the said fluids myself. The transfercase was the ONLY fluid change that was hard to do and most expensive as I just went with the BMW D-1 or whatever it is called. The other fluids I've used Redline for the diffs (70w90, did have 75w90) and Valvoline Maxlife Multi-vehicle for the transmission (ZF-8 supported!) but an upgraded aluminum oil pan with replaceable filter (did it at 92,000K, NOT lifetime as you probably know). My oil change interval was set to 16,000KM but I usually change it out halfway through, before winter (Alberta).
Great video! Thanks for breaking down all the main issues in one place. Pretty much the same as what I've been reading up on! Had no idea about the Valve Cover Diaphragm good to know.
Great video, from a potential buyer of this model, 110,000 kilometres, 1 owner from New, and serviced by bmw at every scheduled interval. It has a full bmw service history, sport line $6,200 usd. And I will allow $1,000 usd pa for maintaining it, and $3k put aside for the inevitable timing chain.
I have this exact car, I believe, 2013 318i. Four months; so far no issues. These videos concern me. Question: Oil changes? Dealership only, or Costco/Walmart? Thx. 🙏🏼
Great review 👌🏻 We have a F31 2013 mineral grey sportline full leather gps etc which we bought as our second car (my wife’s car) in oct-23. It had 139000 kms on the clock. Ours is called Mimmi 😊 Thinks it runs great, feels really nice. I’m also missing the sound from the 6 cylinders (we have had a bunch) What I don’t like is how it sounds starting it up cold. Like a diesel 😅 I recently changed oil, air filter etc. and will just change the oil myself regularly every 10000kms. Next time also change the spark plugs and the brake fluid. I can do some dyi but luckily I have a fantastic brother in law who is a mechanic and very helpful and a massive garage so if any other thing goes wrong help I near 😊 Wouldn’t buy it without that benefit… But a great looking car with great performance. Runs as fast as our E87 130i 👍🏻
Had a '08 745li, '12 550i, and '13 328i. 7 was nice, light and smooth with good room behind wheel and controls, 550..hated it, even though it was mid-size, it felt like all the controls and dash was on top of me, plus very sluggish on power down low. The 328 was the best out of those, surprising torque with foot barely on gas pedal and like he said, it just felt perfect sitting behind the wheel as far as interior positioning and space.
This guy has no idea what he is talking about, I've had an f30 for 6+ years without any mechanical issues. If you don't want to maintain a vehicle properly it may not be reliable, regardless of make.
Love your comment but I have the same car and kept on fixing it over and over again even though I used to take care of it on a regular basis. They are endless money pits.
Excellent video!! Getting this car soon!! But it's stage 2 but pops and bangs... I do wonder if it will still be a good daily? I travel a lot for work.
The rough idle at a cold start could be carbon build up. Miy n20 does the same thing I have 190k kilometers on the engine. It started around 160,000K I am going to get it walnut blasted next week. Hoping it will fix that issue. I too enjoy the car alot. It is a 2015 x1
I check carbon buildup in a later video. Absolutely none - cleanest valves ever. th-cam.com/video/lrGB84IbJag/w-d-xo.html Don’t waste your money on walnut blasting - absolutely no need on N20s. It’s the thick oil when cold. Common issue, been doing it ever since I bought the car.
BMW has problems with valve cover gaskets. BMW has problems with Vanos..BMW has problems with timing chain braking and slipping..Great cars to drive but not reliable people..Like he said get a Lexus or infiniti..luxury, fast , and reliable.!!!
The blue smoke is cause you trash the engine and come to the destination and just turn it off. Turbo stays way to hot and oil circle is broken. Cool the car after effort!
Small things. - Turbo actuator - Oil filter housing oil leak (check out that video) - Steering rack damper (check out that video) - Turbo intake pipe (check out that video)
Hello. Do you still have this car? How's your car running nowadays? Did you have any major issues with this car (e.g. issue with mentioned timing chain) since released of this video? I'm asking you because I'm looking to buy a new car and I really like that one with that engine. I've done some researching on bmw's forums and the user's reviews of this car model are divided. Hope this message finds you well.
I still have it. Check out my recent videos on it here: youtube.com/@that_jamesguy?si=peEcE3wzknX1o25f No engine issue, just other issues. The headlight issue being the most severe/expensive issue.
Hey James. I have a good friend who is offering to sell me his 2013 328i. It has been maintained well over its life at the dealership as well as oil changed every 5-6k miles. They took it to the dealership to get everything checked. Oil, plugs were changed and they listened for the timing chain issues and there was no issue. Curiously is $10.5k a good deal and should I buy it as my everyday car. I drive 22 minutes for work Monday-Friday
Here’s a secret, these cars are very reliable, but there will be minor bumps and bruises along the way. If you learn how to fix these easy things by yourself you will save yourself a lot of money. Taking these cars to the dealership is suicide.
The 328i has twin turbo to give 240bhp plus the Msport has a tuned exhaust. Yes your Xdrive isn't the best example in the F30 class. Next time do your homework unless you want to be thought a fool.

Note sure about your specific market, but up here that would be a good price. With documented maintenance like that you can’t go wrong!

Anyone with draining new battery in 2 days
But if you have a sulev model you get the 15 year or 150k miles warranty
