    Great choice, since the Mongolian heavy cav are often overshadowed by their famed light horse archers. Fact is, the brilliant tactical maneuvers and skirmishing capabilities of the Mongols won't be as potent without some raw shock power to capitalize their advantages.

    • @kaybevang536
      @kaybevang536 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There are also accounts of them wearing Jurchen face armor and Khipchak Masks though it could be Khipchak warriors riding with the mongol units since the Khipchaks are also skilled Calvary men especially Kublai Khans personal guard of made up of both mongols and Cuman Khipchaks And Alans

    • @AntonioZL
      @AntonioZL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, you can't just raid and skirmish against armored opponents forever. The lack of organization you create in fast, 'blitzkrieg' like attacks, needs to be capitalized by raw power.

      Similar principle to artillery in modern wars. You can use as much artillery as you want, but it’s mostly to soften up the enemy so that you can actually charge in with your mechanized and infantry groups with less resistance.

      The food at that time was few, in comparison to our american way of life, with huge portions every 3 hour.
      People at that time were very tiny. If you see a bed or a door at castles, I might say people were 5 feet tall. So a pony is a good war partner.

    • @DarkoTrpevski
      @DarkoTrpevski 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@alexschaeller8881 It's not about the food, the horses on the Mongolian tundra were of a different breed than that of the American plains. They were much closely related to the horses of the Arabian peninsula with which they interbreeded. They were small but boy they were fast and as durable as mules are. On the other note most Asian people are much smaller than the rest of us, and it's true that they rationed while they were on the move, but when they conquered big cities or territories the feasts would last days or weeks, so its not like they were short on food either. On a famous note on the sacking of Khwarezmia, they allegedly piled mountains of cats, mountains of dogs, of man, woman and children. They were tidy that way :).

    I would say the horse was also armored with lamellar. It was crucial to penetrate shield walls or to protect the horse from arrows or any ranged projectile.
    Another crucial element is the eye patch. It blinded the horse's vision and allowed them to take full speed to crush enemy lines without any fear or losing speed. Its pure inertia would break enemy lines and discipline causing chaos to their enemies and allow light horse archers to support from the flanks while Heavy cavalry takes all the focus.

    Regarding shoting an arrow from horseback: There were two ways to do it, either while the horse is standing still or during movemt. The second one is the more interesting. During movement, especially fast movement, they had to release the arrow when all 4 hoofs are up in the air, not touching the ground. If they didn't they would risk potential heavy injuries from the draw back power to themself and the horse. To be able to do this you have to train with your horse from early days on. They usually started it with the age of 4 and had to become one witht their animal. The best cavalry archers were so skilled that they could shoot through the eye holes in an enemy helmet up to 150m away, while the horse was galloping full speed.

    Very nice content, but a little correction here, the Mongols didn't hold their lance like that during the charge, that is a couched-lance stance, practiced by the Medieval European, outside Europe (specifically Asia), lancer cavarly would rather use both hand to hold their lance during the charge not place them under the armpit.

      They should, it was the core of the army. The "Keshiks" were the most skilled warriors of the army. Their main duty was to train new units at the field until they all mastered it and ready for battle. In other words, it was the special force that was used like a knight on the battlefield and trained units on the training ground.

      @majungasaurusaaaa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@linshitaolst4936 Evidence for that? Yes, armor of neighboring peoples resemble each other. But we don't have evidence who invented what first. For example, it was the romans who copied chainmail from the celts, a people less literate than them or the greeks but very adept at metal working.

    • @linshitaolst4936
      @linshitaolst4936 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @majungasaurusaaaa This kind of armor first appeared in the Song Dynasty. The rising Jurchen nationality united with the Song Dynasty to destroy the Liao Dynasty in the north. Then, in order to annex more territory, the Song Dynasty tore up the alliance and declared war like the Jurchen nationality. As a result, the Song Dynasty was defeated and lost the Northern Territory. Then the Jurchen nationality established the Jin Dynasty, captured the armor of the Song Dynasty and improved it into its own mounted cavalry (during this period, the Mongols were slaves of the Liao Dynasty who had just been liberated. They lived in primitive tribes without any armor forging technology)

      One was support light infantry. The other is slow heavy infantry. Neither could perform tasks of nomadic heavy cavalry.

    • @fredrickpoggi5493
      @fredrickpoggi5493 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@majungasaurusaaaa Nomadic heavy cavalry could not perform a direct assault on these units without serious casualties. Longbowen are known heavy cavalry killers and the Swiss pikemen would have to be shot from a distance because a melee assault on them would be near suicide. So no, they would not be able to do it with raw power, but with cunning and flanking.

    • @majungasaurusaaaa
      @majungasaurusaaaa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fredrickpoggi5493 None of them could perform a assault on steadfast formations without serious casualties. Formations were there for a reason. As long as the men's morale and discipline held, they were safe.
      Archers weren't cavalry killers. They were support troops. Archery was to soften up the enemy for melee. If archery was "cavalry killer", nomadic archery would dominate ALL aspect of their cavalry warfare, which it didn't. Even in the age of flintlocks it was charging home with cold steel that decided the battle. So light missile support infantry couldn't charge heavies at all. English longbowmen were good foot archers. But they only standout in a part of the world where archery was rock bottom.
      Heavy infantry can deliver shock. But they're slow and can not exploit flanks and rears like the cavalry can. The swiss were feared because how quickly their pike blocks, which were normally very slow, could aggressively maneuver. But by the end of the day, they couldn't make up for the lack of heavy cav. The swiss would love to have heavy cav of their own if they had the means to.

      @@majungasaurusaaaa I'm not saying that these units are in their totality superior, I'm saying that "raw power" alone doesn't give heavy cavalry the edge and these two units prove how "raw power" can be beaten. I'm fully aware of the countless factors and nuances involved in determining the overall impact of a particular style of warfare, but to say that "raw power" alone wins the day for nomadic heavy cavalry is a bit narrow and overly generalized.
      The Swiss pikemen were perfectly suited to stop a direct head on assault utilizing "raw power" and the longbowmen proved to be excellent cavalry killers at Agincourt and Crecy. My argument is specifically against that notion. Raw power alone does not win the day for nomadic heavy cavalry. They had to be, and certainly were more creative than that, hence their overwhelming success as history shows us.
