I met Derek Trucks when he was 14 years old. I saw him at a bar in Toronto with my friend Jeff Healey. Jeff got up and jammed with him that night at it was the first time that they met. Derek was already quite accomplished and you knew he would continue to grow. His slide playing is now so unique and has such an incredible vocal quality to it that he stands alone.
I heard about him being able to make the guitar sing. I never believed it. There are some guitarists that have a very lyrical way of playing, and then it’s almost like a person singing. But this was like he was channelling a blues singer through his guitar. Insane!

Raphael Rabello's interpretation of "Luiza" is spot on. The song was written by brazilian legend Tom Jobim, world famous for "Girl from Ipanema". The music gained national recognition in Brazil when it was used as the opening title music for soap opera "Brilhante" in 1982. To me "Luiza" is highly emotional, there is a romantic anguish to it that usually moves me to tears if performed with sensibility. Lucas, there are some amazing brazilians guitarists you should watch, so I came up with this list: -Fabio Lima -Robson Miguel -Marcos kaiser -Nelson faria -yamandu costa -João alexandre -Cacau santos -João Bosco -Mateus Asato -Paulinho nogueira
Thank you, I would never have heard Yamashito if not for you! I am totally blown away by what I just saw. Clearly the first guy, Mead is a fan and can do with one finger what Yamashito does with all of his fingers! Totally amazing, thanks again, I liked and subscribed.
You should have included Marcin Patrzalek. Everything I heard from him is amazing. Best percussive playing I think I have seen. His Asturias video shows some very unusual technique, and that was when he was just 16.
I believe Kazuhito's last name is pronounced Yamashta - without the i. I was fortunate to see him at the Ambassador auditorium in Pasadena CA circa '90 where he performed Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World". Its another breathtaking solo guitar arrangement and starts with another wonderful use of his tremolo/ comping technique. I recall that he was even using his right hand little finger at some points to free up the other right fingers for chording and melodies - what a scandal!! He also changes tunings midway through his arrangements - isn't that against the law?
What is kind of sad, unfair, or I don’t know, strange maybe, that over the years there are plenty genius musicians with some instrument such as the guitar yet the most popularity is given to people who are big entertainers but not always good musicians.
Most of these people are only offering about 1/2-3/4 of what they can really do on stage. I believe the reason being is so they can focus on the entertaining.
I thought I had seem everything ins more than 20 years of guitar playing and knowing tons of insane guitar players. Well, until now; this Yamashita just fried my brain, I have seem amazing flamenco guitarrists using this technique in ridiculous levels but I didn't even know that this was possible to go even further like that. Maybe it is impossible for us humans. =O
I had the chance to see and meet Yamashita years ago in Vicenza, guitar and orchestra (Solisti Veneti). One of the most incredible musical experiences ever. Amazing sound, perfect control, great feeling. I wanted to exchange few words but he only spoke japanese. Anyway no need to speak.
The history of Zymakov is so rough. He was one of the first winners of GFA (Guitar foundation of America) contest in 1991, and some years ago he lost his fingers due to a strong frost in his hometown. I was really in shock when I read the news about Alexei.
The younger guitar players who have benefited from TH-cam and the like, understandably can play things that seem out of this world. However, when I was at University starting in 1990 Yamashita, at that time was seen as someone on a completely different level even from Pepe Romero John Williams Julian bream etc. This is a great video thank you.

Joshua Meader is a guitarist I only recently discovered due to the algorithm and the guy's just insane! Very fast yet clean and very technical as well. The guy's been playing jazz since he was a kid lol. Also what else can we say about Derek Trucks? Each note oozes with emotion!
I’m gunna be honest, Josh is one of my fav guitar idols.
My guitar teacher when I was 14 years old showed me a video of Raphael Robello playing tico tico no fuba. I had forgotten the guitarists name and couldn’t find that video until I saw him in this video. It’s been 7 years so thank you 😂
Yamashita is impressive. He expanded guitar boundaries in many forms
Jorge Cabellero plays Yamashita arrangements, he was doing Picture at an Exhibition for awhile, not sure if it's still on his program
Lucas, there are some amazing brazilians guitarists you should watch, so I came up with this list:
-Fabio Lima
-Robson Miguel
-Marcos kaiser
-Nelson faria
-yamandu costa
-João alexandre
-Cacau santos
-João Bosco
-Mateus Asato
-Paulinho nogueira
Faltou Alessandro penezzi😁
Baden Powell!!!
you forgot Jean Charnaux (yes he is Brazilian) and Marcos Tardelli
Don't forget Edson Lopes.

Has he done anything live?
I believe Kazuhito's last name is pronounced Yamashta - without the i. I was fortunate to see him at the Ambassador auditorium in Pasadena CA circa '90 where he performed Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World". Its another breathtaking solo guitar arrangement and starts with another wonderful use of his tremolo/ comping technique. I recall that he was even using his right hand little finger at some points to free up the other right fingers for chording and melodies - what a scandal!! He also changes tunings midway through his arrangements - isn't that against the law?
Mayer realizes how good he is, and BB is sitting like a proud grandfather listening to the evolution of the sound he pioneered.
Yo that yamashita guy literally exploded my brain i dont even know what just happened
Good slide is hard enough, but making it sound like you're NOT using a slide is beyond good. Dude is a robot.
I wish my wife looked at me the way John is looking at Derek...
I've seen a video of Yamashita - Pictures on an Exhibition - where he frets with the back-side of his thumb on the top of the fretboard
josh meader is fucking insane, glad he’s getting more recognition, his youtube hasn’t gotten too many views
this Yamashita link is the best thing I've heard in my entire life. Thank you Lucas
Lucas’ face on those pinky tremolos is priceless 😂
That was insane. Thanks for such a great presentation bro.
Amazing for sure. Thanks Lucas
These guitarists have INSANE talent! Yamashita became ONE with his guitar smh🔥🔥🔥
That Derek Trucks solo is insane. So beutiful!
So this last guitaris is doing something that should be impossible, right? I just need a reality check.
Dude that one finger tremolo is crazy!
I love how Yamashita switches between his first and third fingers for the tremolo like it's no big thing. Jeez!!
The history of Zymakov is so rough. He was one of the first winners of GFA (Guitar foundation of America) contest in 1991, and some years ago he lost his fingers due to a strong frost in his hometown. I was really in shock when I read the news about Alexei.
Oh no that’s so sad. I can only imagine how devastating that would be for any musician especially one of that caliber. My heart goes out to him
How sad a story. Such talent!
A true tragedy.
I had lunch with Yamashita after I picked him up from the airport and was surprised to find such a quiet and polite man who was so unassuming.
@@rjwh67220 Well, I also met Raphael Rabello when he was warming up on the guitar prior to making his recording at Guitar Solo and he didn't look anything like Yamashita.
That kind of slide guitar playing (single lines) is probably the closest the guitar can get to copy the human voice. So good!
Derek Truck's makes me feel like the guitar is giving a ted talk
The more you inspire the greater you are..I have seen so many incredibly gifted players that I won't listen too because nothing that sticks to my ribs...
