- Triumph's Street Triple R was our favorite of all bikes last year. Does the STR still have what it takes to remain one of our most loved motorcycles after we pit it against Ducati's all-new 2011 Monster 796 in a naked middleweight duel?

I love the headlights on the Triple R! I also love the very, very wide rear wheel on the Street Triple R.
If I got to pick between one, if they were both free I would definetly go for the Street Triple R.
I have ridden the Street Triple R and It blew my mind !!! It's so light and powerful, so sporty and yet so docile. Just the best Naked to this day. AMAZING
The best review I've seen yet of these two bikes. I've been really leaning towards buying to Duc because I really liked the new styling but couldn't shake how much I liked the S3. You convinced me to go down and test ride the S3.
Thanks!
I've grown accustomed to them and I love the way they look with the new flyscreen. Super mean stuff.
This video has been a great help so far. Originally wanted a Bonnie T100 in black but for the same money, I had no idea Triumph had these going as well. I've always wanted a Ducati but not sure if I can spend the extra for a very plastic bike. That twin is phenomenal though. Having all these great choices is awesome, even if confusing. Time to start demoing
Interesting take on the power. On magazine which put these two bikes on the dyno showed the Ducati with more power at every rpm until its 8500rpm redline, then the Triumph showed more top HP all the way to its redline. The same story was true for torque. Maybe the second rider needs to recalibrate the seat of his riding suit.
Can't say I like the look of the Triumph in that colour, they look amazing in white though. I saw one in purple that looked surprisingly good too.
On the performance side, triumph has been upgraded with an aftermarket exhaust, however the Ducati is kept standard.
The termi's shall definitely bridge the gap significantly.
@RicardoSS85 the triumph street triple R has 78kw or 104.5hp.
Though I am referencing the new model, this hasn't changed from the 2011 model.
this is from the Triumph Australia website (youtube wouldn't let me post the link)
@MX5GS get the speed triple?
45 seconds in and I’m falling asleep already
sick music on the background
How is the wobbling at highway speed?
@anshumanabhisek You raise a very important point! Getting a bike is about getting something that gets your heart racing. Its like falling in love - no amount of facts can tell you which bike to fall in love with and if you prefer one over the other because its your preference, no one can tell you you are wrong. That said, I personally prefer what the look/sound/setup and all round package of the Triumph over any other naked bike.
It was in the early 90s that ATK had many models that had no suspension adjustment..They said that owners did not know what they were doing with the clickers and through ignorance made the bike handle like a pig..Even more true today when most owners never touch the adjusters..
Love the Monster...Triumph is a great bike, but it's ugly. I wouldn't be buying one of these to race so the differences are negligible. Ducati FTW...
@WaltDesine
The 1100 competes with the Triumph Speed Triple, not the Street Triple. Might want to check your stats.
Fire the sound director. Great info tho!
I'm in love with the tripple street. definitely my dream bike.
Mate, I can read - my remark was in reply to the comment from WaltDesine which suggested putting the 1100 up against the Street Triple and I was pointing out how invalid the suggestion was. I also know about the Street, since I own one.
whats the difference between the street triple and the speed triple ?
good review
I also dont like striple headlights, I took them both for test rides back to back and had much more fun on the Ducati. Also found the engine of the striple had a whine that started to annoy me after a while where the monster sounds awesome. more rattle at low revs but I'd still take it. youtube audio never does monsters justice. They sound awesome in the real.
The lack of answers actually says a lot about the Street Triple reliabilty;) I'm going with the Monster 796. Anyway, thanks!
People, I'd appreciate some opinions about possible reliability problems with the Street Triple. Mainly timing chain tensioner problems, oil leakage in the head gasket, coolant leakage in the radiator hoses and faulty electronics. Thanks a lot.
I actually like the new lights, you could always pick up some round ones cheap though.
@fullfunk Definitely agree with you there! I have a '10 STR, and when I go to a big dealer in Toronto for parts, which is the biggest Ducati dealer around here, it makes me not want to ever ride a Duc. It's like they go there to hang out? Worse than the guys on Harley's who hang out at Tim Horton's all night...
actually, it's a valid comparison. Sport Rider mag had a shootout last yr w/ BMW F 800, Yamaha Fz8, monster 1100 evo and street triple 675. the triple blew away the monster almost in every performance category. the triple have more horse power but less torque than the monster w/c is expected considering the displacement and technology of the engine. 1st triump 2nd Yam 3rd ducati 4th bmw
@1986SoWhat I agree... I own one (2008) and it is the best bike I've ever owned by far and I've had many cruisers and sportbikes.
Both bikes have their strengths and weaknesses. Our friend bellow is correct, both are great bike manufacturers! It's a metter of what is more or less important for you as a rider.
Anyone no if seat height is the same?
@RicardoSS85
A "lack" of responses would imply that people aren't having any issues worth complaining about. People tend to speak up more when something has gone wrong vs. when things are going how they should. That's assuming one would actually use a silly website like TH-cam to get the feel for a particular market...
yes
I've rode both ...Triumph is in another league, far superior bike.
@shafro1 thanks for the info..
Yes you're correct Walter, the 1100 Monster and 675 triple both make around 100hp. It's the torque where the twin has the advantage but I'm sure you already know that and so does everybody else. They are only comparing it because it's around the same price point as Yarek has already said. But yes the street still makes more power than the 1100cc ducati engine interesting isn't it?
Ducati all the way...v twin,riding position,sound,handling. ..that is just me!
IDK... tough call. That having been said I switched from S3 to MTS 1000S LOL.
@anshumanabhisek I wanted the Ducati 1100 at first, but then I sat on one in the dealership. Uncomfortable...unreasonably uncomfortable. The whole point behind having a handlebar is to have a realistic riding position for the street. I ended up with the STR and I'm perfectly happy.
How tall are you
Yep
how many takes did it take to come up with "naked funksters"? 0:19
how tall are you guys? you get your knee down with little effort and the bikes are at stock height. Im 5'7'' and have a hard time getting my knee down.
@WaltDesine It's not really a valid comparison to take a bike that is about 40% more expensive, has a 1000cc engine vs a 675cc engine. The 1100 has a lot more power too, as it should have with 50% more capacity.
How would it compare to the Street Triple and not the Street Triple R? I'd guess then they'd be a match in the suspension.
I own a 2010 Triumph STR and I love the light weight, fine handling and excellent torquey powerband. Just right for me cos I am 5'-8 and 160lbs and the riding position is a little more sane than the hard-core sportbikes. But I think it looks better with the stainless high pipes; pricey and loud aftermarket pipes are not worth the couple of extra horses you might get. Don't need a screen; the wind balances the weight on my arms. Ducatis are wonderful too; whatever turns your crank.
@Pinkycrust Main guy talking, Pete is 5'8" ... Rider in white leathers, Jeff is 6' 0"
@jasonwolffjb There has been a lot of trouble in Britain with plastic tanks as the Gasoline now has more ethanol in it. This is all "Green" bio ethanol and it melts tanks. People with classic racers with fibreglass tanks have been suffering. Check your brand of gas to see whats put in it.
wich bike is better?...street triple r or ducati 796?.....i want to buy someone??...
please , help with your comments.....thanks friends¡¡;)
Ducati needs to get with it. These guys were far too kind to 'ol Ducati. They know that the handling, smooth power band of the Triumph is worlds ahead.
a pair of termis and the upgrade of the ECU coming with them will solve the problem of power ( since the street triple has an arrow exhaust). Now for the twisty bits, i know which bike i would have...
@jasonwolffjb Not only consider what RicardoSS85 said, but remember too that the Ducati is still more expensive than the Triumph, so cost has to play a role too.
i love the duc monster always wanted one for my first bike but i am triumph for life
@whiterabit09 I'll repeat: the MONSTER has 87hp and 58lb-ft torque. So, although it has a little less power than the Street Triple, it has more torque.
@jmancru You said you didn't own a bike before, but have you ridden? If you've got some experience, go do some demo days.
Too bad Triumph ditched the double-rounds...
They Really needed to put the 1100 Monster up against the 675. Similar Power and Suspension components. Of Course the Ducati name exacts a Premium Cost, but this would be a Classic Old School vs New School competition...
@opmike343 I don't agree with you man. If you're having a great time, you just post something like 'all ok with mine', which takes you about 5 seconds! I used a lot of different media to get the feel of both the STriple and the 796 (including the silly youtube website) - only one choice could have been made. Ride safe!
i so wish i could afford a ducati monster 796 and in that colkr scheme. drools
+John Benedeck That's true...best buys are old garage Ducs. The 2007 s2r 800 is a good example. Most have super low miles and sell for 4-5grand. But if you want a modern hooligan bike get the STriple.
I'm in the market for a middle-weight naked. I really, really want ABS following a few close-calls on wet pavement on my current non-ABS bike (FZ6R). If the Street triple came with ABS (as the speed triple does), I'd get it in a heartbeat. For now, it's looking like my garage will have a monster796ABS in the spring of 2012...
@GOBbluthagain street triple is 675 speed triple is 1050cc
triumph forever!!!
why dont u show two bikes completely at once to compare
I want to buy the street triple in India when it launches in March 2013...
Triumph is my love :]
@bigboysidd Exhaust doesn't make a big performance difference. The 796 motor is never going to have the incredible linear pull of the 675, period.
How much do these dues weigh? 125?? The suspension can't take a big rider.
@DJaysParadise
It's a nearly two year old video; who is this comment directed towards anyway? Yes, yes, yes, we all know it's better to wear proper gear. This fact doesn't need to be shouted out every single time someone chooses MOTGATT over ATGATT.
could 2 persons sit on Street Triple?
I will own you Ducati Monster 796!!
I just don't like those twin head lights on the Tri
Ducati 796 cannot compete with a Street Triple. I have had a 796 and now I own a Speed.
@remakes personally i think the triple is more comfortable (more crotch room) but go sit on them at the dealer!
I would buy the Yamaha hands down.
it costs 40k in argentina, so dont complain...
That background track has to be one of the most irritating things....seriously get rid of it.
the speed triple looks like something a fat girl would ride.
@fullfunk hmmm... you must own a ducati, no? have fun dude, love my ducati whether hot girls are turning their heads or if I just nailed the cornering on a tough back country road with nobody around to see. It's about riding not petty internet trash talking, ducati makes good bikes, so does triumph. I do like what triumph has done recently and will be checking out the streets and speeds before next season starts.
actually 14k might be alright then :P
somebody needs to start a bloody riot in front of triumph in Argentina
@jasonwolffjb The Monster has 87hp dude... And being a 2-cylinder bike, it has more torque than the STriple (50 vs 58 lb-ft). Get your facts right before posting shit.
Ducati FTW. :P
The Ducati looks way more fun
@remakes I've not ridden a 796, but owning a Street Triple R after 5 years on other bikes, you will not be disappointed with the Triumph. It's comfortable, handles very well, and the motor is something else for sure. It just goes and goes.
@odracirseraoseia1999
I have mine for 8 months- no problem at all!
i want triumph motor in 796 body
i want ducati motor in a triumph body =s
Riding those bikes with jeans on? Oh dear...
Why does it cost 4k more in australia, fuck they rip us off every fkn chance they get.
40000 Argentine Peso = 7642.76 Australian Dollar, I'd take 7.6k over 14.8k brand new in australia any day bro
cmon 3 cups agains 2. ? triumph beats the shit out of the italian
What the hell is your problem?
@alehax27 DOWNSHIFT!! haha.
@noshowdidomenico how true is your comment!! I was in the dealership and the girl behind the counter was an absolute arsehole!!! Ive just past my test and my instructor said have a look at the sreet triple, everyone says its great!!
The Triumph is not my taste...Ducati Monster,...Naahhh...in this category I prefer a Buell :)
I just can't get Triumph over my head. maybe it's because my mom had a Triumph tr7 car in the 80's and it was always broken. in edition to it being really hard to drive, clunky, and ugly. not saying tri bikes are bad. just somehow to me they don't sound very good. almost a "non-brand" to me.
Ducati is just over an inch lower than the Triumph.
And BTW... Plz don't reply rudely cozz I've never mentioned Street Triple is bad........ Its very gud in fact but ugly and a bit cheap luking(Just my own feeling..... No need to argue)...... Daytona 675, however, is in a different league of its own......... Its, in fact, one of the most beautiful bike around after the Ducatis!!!!!!!!!
@fattybarber ...you mean subjective in reviews
remarkably poor quality 'HD'
swapped my 796 monster for a speed triple , monster had the looks and handling but no balls whatsoever ...
what do you mean by balls?
Haziq Z power!!
ah right... I already have the monster and a cbr500 as a second bike. Thinking of trading my cbr for a street triple or gsxr600 for more power lol
I visited a Triumph Ducati dealership today with my dad. The Triumph IS NOT EVEN CLOSE to the styling of the Ducati
@larlar752000
lol =P
