The Father is Greater than I

  • Jesus tells us in the Gospel of John chapter 14: "The Father is Greater than I."
This may be a confusing statement, especially in the Gospel of John, since in no other Gospel, it can be argued, does is Jesus divine nature made more clearly.
So, the questions becomes what does Jesus mean in the context of the entire Gospel of John, and what does he mean in the immediate context of this verse?
Listen as Dr. Pitre explains in this video, which is a portion of a video taken from his series, The Mass Readings Explained.
    Notable Quote:
"And so, what do we say as Catholics to that? How do we interpret the verse?
Well the answer to that’s real simple. We just ignore it. We don’t talk about it. We don’t preach about it. We just pretend like it’s not there. No, okay, that’s wrong. That’s not what we do. The Church canonized the scriptures. This is not a surprise to us, that Jesus says, “The Father is greater than I” in the Gospel of John. The Church gave us the Gospel of John and said this is the word of God. So the question becomes not “what do we do with the verse?” (in the sense of, “do we take it out of the Bible” or “do we ignore it”), the question becomes, “what does it mean? How do we understand this verse in context (in the context of the whole gospel).” And I’m going to come back to the living tradition in just a second, and we’ll look at how this verse was interpreted by St. Augustine, but for now I would just make this one clear point..."

@Michael Red Hawk ,,,, be careful sir,,,,,,,, we are not all brothers or sisters to false teachings. They can be, but not of the BODY OF YESHUA JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!! Months ago the Pope said "" JESUS FAILED AT THE CROSS!!! The Pope also said that the Darwin theory cannot be ruled out in the creation along with helping JEHOVAH because ""JEHOVAH could have not done it on HIS OWN!!! Look up on U Tube of Mass being said in the vatican filmed as it is being held of priests singing to Lucifer (SATAN) admonishing him as YESHUA'S FATHER, AND THAT YESHUA JESUS IS SATAN'S SON. THATS JUST RECENTLY. THIS ISN'T SECOND HAND HEARSAY SIR. THIS IS OPEN TO THE CONGREGATION ON SUNDAY'S SERVICES, AND AFTER THE PRIESTS SINGS THIS INTO THE MASS THE CONGREGATION ANSWERS BACK, """AMEN"".
""AMEN""!!!!! MEANING THEY AGREE IN THE FULL SENSE OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, OR THEY BLINDLY AGREE, AS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH RITUALS ARE IN LATIN. BUT!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT IS BEING SAID ENGLISH INTERPRETATION IS HIGHLIGHTED UNDERNEATH. TO FURTHER WHATS BEING SAID HAVE GOOGLE TRANSLATE THE LATIN WORDS INTO ENGLISH AND THERE YOU HAVE IT.
MANY PEOPLE I TALK TO DOES NOT KNOW THAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OWNS A TELESCOPE HERE IN TUCSON, ARIZONA THAT'S ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD. HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED AND CAN REACH FAR INTO THE GALAXY. THE NAME OF THIS INSTRUMENT IS "" LUCIFER""!!!! GO FIGURE!!!!
I SENSE YOU ARE A TRUE MAN SEEKING THE TRUTH!!!!! I'M ALREADY CONVINCED THAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS SANTANIC. WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN HERE IS PART OF WHY I KNOW THIS.
HERE ARE MY OTHER REASONS FOR IT.
#1..... they promote HOMOSEXUALITY. Both priests, and NUNS commit fornication with the same sexes. YET they take a vow of CELIBACY. WHY??????
#2 ......many in the higher ranks have mistresses.
#3..... many have fathered children and disown their own offspring because of illicit behavior.
#4..... priests having intercourse with nuns and the babies of this union, many are aborted and burried in secret plots.....( by the way, nuns have reported this very thing).
#5....... the molestation and rapes of young boys and girls in their schools and orphanages.
This has been a practice for centuries veiled in deceit and coverups, some even murdered.
Many other reasons, but you get the idea. One last sickening thought is those PRIESTS LEAD the CONGREGATIONS ON SUNDAY'S SERVICES, HANDLE THE BREAD AND WINE WITH THEIR FILTHY HANDS AND ITS ALL IN TBE NSME OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
SIR,,,,, YOU TELL ME!!! IS THIS OF THE GOD YOU SERVE????? I DON'T THINK SO!!!! THEY COME OUT OPENLY AND PROFESS """THEIR GOD""".
MY GOD IS NOT MIXED WITH OTHER gods Of NO VALUE!!! All others are FALSE. MY GOD IS THE ALMIGHTY GOD YAHWEH JEHOVAH, YESHUA JESUS HIS SON, AND THE LEADINGS OF GOD'S HOLY SPIRIT. ALL others ARE IN VAIN. DO YOUR RESEARCE BROTHER, GOD LOVES YOU AND HE WILL NOT LEAVE YOU AS YOU SEARCH FOR TRUTH. BELIEVE!!!!

Patricia Rowe whilst i agree these actions are horrifically depraved and God will return them for what they have done, i don’t think that completely rules out the Catholic Church 100% because it has been around since Christ. I get what u mean though many priests and nuns are not true Christians and God will punish them

You say Jesus was both fully human and fully God? If that were the case--which it's not--how would you explain John 7:16, where Jesus said: "My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me"? So, if the human Jesus were also fully God, why did God lie and say that his message was not his when it really _was_ his?

    • @cbooth151
      @cbooth151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Belina What you said is so true on two levels. Consider:
      1. If God is a trinity and that the human Jesus is fully God, then Jesus would be a single-person human who is also a three-person deity at the same time.
      2. If the human Jesus is fully God, then, the Father of God is greater than God.
And another thing, you are correct by saying the trinity belief is polytheistic. As the trinity doctrine says:
      1. "The Father is God." [God #1]
      2. "The Son is God." [God #2]
      3. "The holy spirit is God." [God #3]
That's three Gods. The trinity teaching is incredibly stupid.

    • @cbooth151
      @cbooth151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Belina I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses. And you?

    • @cbooth151
      @cbooth151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Belina I believe in the Bible, which says:
1.God is one person, not three. As 1 Cor. 8:6 says: "There is one God, the Father." Jesus added: "I am ascending to my Father and my God."
      2. Jesus is not God, but God's Son. As John 20:31 says: "But these are written that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name."
      3. Jesus is alive since his resurrection from the dead. As Acts 2:32 says: "God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this."
      4. God has a personal name, which is "Jehovah" [in English]. As Ex. 3:15 says: "God said to Moses: 'And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.'"

@Belinda - what a beautiful name for a Muslim (Belinda). We Catholics believe in the Trinity but you Muslims PRACTICE the Trinity.
Quran starts with the Trinity in Chapter 1 verse 1 of the Quran -
In the Name of Allah, Al Rehman , Al Rahim that's 3 times.
Why 99 Allah has 99 names why not 100 or 98.
      ( Tip:The age of Jesus 33years x 3 =99)
Your Prophet Muhammad does everything in threes. Why?
Abulution/ Wudu,, (washing before prayers) 3 times ears, nose, forearms, hand, legs, foot.
Greet someone 3 times - Saalam Vale Kuum.
      Taking oath 3 times.
Divorce by saying 3 times -Talak, Talak, Talak.
      No Allah no Islam,
      No Jabreel no Islam,
      no Muhammad no Islam.
Namus (later identified as Jabreel squeezed Muhammad 3 times.
Please explain why every thing in Islam is done 3 times. The mike is yours 😉

Joking aside though, I believe it was done for practical and health reason. Think about how people, nomads, in the desert, preserving their foods without any refrigeration? Cows are useful to carry stuff, but pigs? They’re fat on 4legs! Not to mention the diseases pigs carry. Even now in developing countries pork is still viewed unsafe - when I grew up we were cautioned not to get pork from random butcher due to the tape worm disease it could carry. Pigs eat anything and it is more expensive to tend.

      Julie,
It is absolutely redundant to say that the Father is greater than a human.
The Father is GREATER than any and all humans.
      No!
This statement was made by a divine being. So the question is: how can one divine being, be greater than another…?
Can one infinity be greater than another? Mathematicians tells us, YES. Infinity + 1, is greater than infinity.
In theological terms: the Father is unbegotten, He has no beginning, He is divine by nature.
Christ is begotten, he has a beginning (like Eve from Adam), he is divine by the Father’s decree.
And this sense the Father is greater than Jesus; Jesus is greater than Adam; and Adam is greater than Eve.
      I Cor 11:3.
Yet, Jesus is fully divine; just as Eve is fully human.
We submit to Jesus as we submit to a Prince or a King; whereas we submit to the Father through a sacrifice - which we offer by invoking the name of Jesus.
This construct eliminates the need for the unbiblical Catholic Trinity.
Biblical Trinity is the unity between the Father and the Son, with the Holy Spirit being Their invisible manifestation to the world.

♦ More puzzling is John 20:17, words from the post-resurrection God-Man in His new glorified body that isn't subject to death: “Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, *to my God and your God* .”
♦ It's easier to understand pre-resurrection Jesus in His lowly human estate like ours say in Luke 18:19 and Mark 10:18 say "“Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone."
♦ Perhaps when Jesus was stuck on planet earth limited by spatial and temporal boundaries before His Ascension, the Father in Heaven is technically greater due to Jesus "being found in human form He humbled Himself (Phil 2:8)." Jesus In Time versus Jesus Eternal
♦ When The Lord Jesus shows up in the Book of Revelation to John of Patmos, His co-equality with the Father is unquestionable.

Indeed. The Father created the Son; the Son did not create the Father. The Father is the Whole; the Son is One in Unity WITH the Whole....But the Son is not the Whole in Its entirety. You began by saying that here`s what Saint Augustine said about this verse, and since i am Augustinian, can i please ask you to read some of the words which saint Augustine quoted about this exact verse? Like he explained as you did about verses and words which concerns his divinity and others which concerns his humanity... Jesus is the Son of David according to his humanity and Jesus is the Lord of David according to his divinity. Jesus is a descendant of Abraham according to his humanity and Jesus is the God of Abraham according to his divinity ( Before Abraham was I AM ), Jesus is born of Mary according to his humanity and Jesus is the Creator of Mary according to his divinity. The Father is greater than I according to his humanity and I and the Father are one according to his divinity... And many more words... Thank you again and God bless you...

I think we shouldnt be afraid to consider God is greater than Jesus. It does not mean Jesus isnt God and He is still our Lord and the creator of all things in heaven and under heaven. But the Son submits to the Father, just like we will be submitting to Jesus perfectly once when we are in our glorious body. At that time we will be equal to Jesus as His friends and brothers yet at the same time Jesus is greater than us because He is also our Lord and savior. And we are His servants

For the Father is greater than I... It is evident, that Christ our Lord speaks here of himself as he is made
man: for as God he is equal to the Father (See Phil. 2.) Any difficulty of understanding the meaning of
these words will vanish, when the relative circumstances of the text here are considered: for Christ being
at this time shortly to suffer death, signified to his apostles his human nature by these very words: for as
God he could not die. And therefore as he was both God & man, it must follow that according to his
humanity he was to die, which the apostles were soon to see & believe, as he expresses, ver. 29. And now
I have told you before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe. - St. Jerome of
    Douay-Rheims Bible (345-420).

"El Padre es más grande que yo"
    Juan, 14

Exactly. That's why Jesus said the Father. He didn't say God is greater so that we can contrast the divine or God with His humanity. He said the Father. Which simply means the Son is not lesser but under the authority of the Father. The Father, just as in human culture, is above the Son, even though both are God or divine. It's about order and rank. I am as human as my biological father but he is indeed greater than me because he is my father. He's above me.
