  • A few weeks ago I showed you how to fix a UEFI boot loader. Today we are going to fix an MBR boot loader. a master boot record partition as it turns out is a lot harder to fix then a GPT partition. But harder doesn't mean its impossible. I'll show you how to do it in this video.

Thx for teaching an old dog a new trick. Usually when the /bootfix fails on me, I assume it's because the OS is just beyond repair. Now that I know it's because of 1703, that's a game changer for me! We can collab ANY time you want, brother! 👍💪

I wasn't aware of what was causing the problem ether until I did the research for this video. Many guides would mention the 1703 issue but were never clear on it. It wasn't until I tried it on a 1703 disk that it worked. The video almost didn't get made because of it.

Hello Rich, I can't tell ya how much I appreciate this awesome video. Early July of this year (2024) we had a lightning strike that took out 3 routers, 2 computers and a UPS. After almost 2 months of waiting on replacement parts (2 motherboards, new memory) I'm finally getting things up and running again.
I haven't tried the repair solution you shared in this video, however it looks extremely promising and will actually work.
Hopefully I wouldn't need direct help from you, if I did happen to need a little extra guidance would you be willing to answer my questions and assist me?
Hopefully I can manage to hold my mouth right as I'm performing the steps you have shared in this video. In a brief explanation the system I am working on is mom's computer and it is a dual boot (Windows XP Pro 32 bit and Windows 10 Home 64 bit) there are 2 hard drives, each drive is a terabyte in size and each drive has 2 partitions split as closely as possible to 500 GB per partition on each drive. A recent discovery was the XP is on one of the drives and 10 on the other drive.
I didn't intend to do that as I intended both OSs to be on one drive and the other drive would be exclusive for storage.
Anyway I have a slight concern that the dual boot as described could cause the operation of repairing the BOOTMGR to fail. Anyway thanks for taking the time to read my post 😃😄.

This was an absolute life saver. I installed a new psu with the wrong cables and something happened to my ssd so that it couldn’t boot anymore. Just went straight to bios. I spent nearly 10 hours troubleshooting and testing components before I found this video. My boot files must have been corrupted somehow and this fixed them. Can’t thank you enough.

If I had MILLION$ to give you, it would be yours!!!! Holy cats!! I was dead in the water and you resurrected me!! 🙂 I knew what the problem was...just had to figure out a way to resolve it. This video was PHENOMENAL!!! Luckily my Windows installation CD is pre 1703, so I didn't have to fight that issue. I did, however, have to side track a little off your video and find a fix for an "Element Not Found" error when running BOOTREC /FIXBOOT. But once that issue was resolved, everything launched with success exactly as you demonstrated in your video. Just friggin' YUUUUUUUGE KUDOS to you!!!!! Thank you ~

Thanks so much for the video! In my case, I have a dual boot Windows 10/Linux Mint system. While trying to upgrade to Mint v22, GRUB got corrupted. I then removed Mint and GRUB, leaving only Windows 10. But that apparently messed up the MBR. I followed your instructions, but when I reached the bootrec /fixboot command, I got "Element Not Found" error. It turned out that my Windows boot partition wasn't active. So I used your last instruction (diskpart> active) to set it. After that, bootrec /fixboot completed successfully. Following the rest of your instructions, Windows was able to boot!

Thanks for posting all this. Even as a technical person, what this tells us is that windows is inordinately complex and for no good reason. My daughter's win 10 disk just gave up and fortunately before it died, I managed to clone it. So to avoid all this horrendous boot nightmare, that's what I recommend - buy another disk of the same size and clone your OS. Microsoft will probably say that's an infringement of the license agreement, but I play fair - the clone goes in my desk drawer until I need it. For those who might complain that this method requires the purchase of another disk, my answer, from my experience of Windows disk failures, is that you're going to need one to replace the failed drive, AND its much harder to reconfigure your new disk when the old one fails. Happy disk drives :) :)

I let Windows 11 Update from 23H2 to 24H2 on unsupported hardware (LGA1366, Intel X58).
After that, Windows 11 then decided to break the bootmgr on it's own and refused to boot into 24H2.
It just gave me the good old "BOOTMGR Image is corrupt. The system cannot boot." error instead.
(i guess this is Microsoft's way of keeping unsupported hardware away from 24H2 lol).
Despite what you said, i had to purposely break/delete the boot folder and bootmgr to fix it
(step two alone did not work, so breaking the boot loader on purpose was the only way).
I am now finally able to boot back into my Windows 11 PC again (albeit that it went back to 23H2).
So i'd like to say thank you so much for this video, as it really saved the day for me.

A great guide but in my case I got dead CMOS battery on my laptop and so I could no longer boot my system with GPT and EFI without changing the default setting every time, so I decided to go back to MBR. For that you have to remove any partition that is related to boot and keep only Windows partition itself, then in diskpart creat par prim, format fs=ntfs, assign letter (whatever you like), active. Afterwards use the command "bootsect /nt60 your letter of choice: /mbr" and then "bcdboot D:\windows /s C:" as follows in this video guide. After that I did fixmbr and fixboot just in case, still haven't fixed the fact that scanos can't find any system but finally my system booted up just fine.

This video saved a huge amount of my medical academic data which became inaccessible. Thanks a lot to you.
I absolutely love the way you explain things. Especially explaining the possible reasons for the hiccups one may face when trying to repair their system. I also appreciate the way you explain things step by step with visuals to go alongside the narration. Keep up the good work bro. Such things always help in a crunch when immediate professional help cannot be available.
The issue you highlighted regarding bootrec not being available in newer versions of windows got me thinking a bit. Are there more such tools or applications which have been deprecated by the original publishers? Especially ones which become essential in such scenarios. If yes, it would be extremely helpful, I believe, to compile a list of such tools and the ISO versions which would be required to access them. As a layman with just some working knowledge of tinkering systems to get my desktop up and running, a person like me would definitely appreciate knowing which ISOs should always be at hand. Storage space (both physical and digital) is at a relative premium for me and I would rather keep a few essential ISOs saved on my disks rather than all available ISOs as an IT repair professional might.
I guess I am effectively requesting you to make a video listing out such applications and tools and which ISOs are these available in.
Thanks a lot again. I wish you even more success and hope that you continue educating us.

You can solve MBR more easily
Use a Wnindows98 or XP CD and use Fdisk
    All first command fdisk /mbr
And 2nd fdisk with option 2 you can indicate the active partition
You can also do this via a USB stick
    That also works well

    Out of date!
You don't need fixboot, fixmbr or indeed bootrec at all!
It's far easier than you think.
Delete the useless start partition with your favorite Partition tool.
To create with DISKPART at the beginning of the drive:
    create part primary size=80 offset=1
    Then:
    Format quick fs=NTFS label=system
    assign (gives a letter)
    Then very important:
    ACTIVE
list vol (take note of windows and system partition letters, for this example system is G:)
    Exit
    Then:
    Bcdboot F:\windows /S G:
(Sets up all the boot files)
    Exit
    Reboot
    Easy?
    I used a Windows ISO 22621.2715

Hence, afterwards you should be able to have the choosing menu of opting which OS to boot from. Should anyone needs more details on that, revert here and say it!😉😉😉

They want to look Windows like Mac OS, but don't do anything (rather the opposite) to be more convenient under the hood. MacOS just lists every bootable OS it finds by pressing alt during startup and you click on it to boot from it. Than you can select the drive you want to boot from by default in the settings. If I clone a drive, I can even boot from it on another Mac and the Mac OS I'm working with never had a fresh install since 2008.
Just yesterday I went nuts with my Windows-PC. New SSD seems corrupted (occasional hanging due to super slow file access), but at least was booting the OS most of the time and I made a clone with Macrium Reflect, but it wasn't booting because it did not clone the boot-partition even it claimed it did. Something is totally f-ed up here and I always have to boot into an old HDD first without any OS on it to boot into Windows on SSDs for unknown reason (all GPT-disks). Even after the 5th or 6th fresh Windows-install it's still the case. But Windows is a miserable piece of junk. I had to fresh install Windows 11 a 2nd time after two days, because I've changed the UI-language and couldn't access most of the settings after. They just disappeard. This piece of sh*t can't even wipe SSDs entirely without diskpart and the 11-installer refused to install the OS because it didn't like the partition-scheme. After I've managed to wipe the SSD (once I did it on the Mac because it can), it didn't recognize my RTX 4080 and I couldn't install the drivers for it. How can a consumer OS be so bad?

all i did was accidentally reset my pc when it had an update installing..
i was working on something and i realized i didnt have a usb port plugged in that i needed, i reached around my computer to plug it in and when i did i had accidentally hit the power button on the tower. the screen went black and so i instinctively hit the power button to turn it back on and when i did i noticed that my computer had started an update and was at 2% already by the time i reached over to hit the button again. i got a bad pool caller error code, someone suggested i update my bios which i did and no i have an inaccessible boot device error and my command prompt WILL NOT register that i even have a valid windows 10 key. all this over accidentally hitting a damn button? is there anything i can do to fix this? i have a flash drive with a windows 10 boot on it but my problem PC will not accept it, all it says is that the computer cannot repair or accept the boot file.

Yo, guys! I did mistake when transformed my MBR disk to GPT... Then I walked around this shit around 2 days... Then I understood one simple thing - to do through MiniPartitionTool partition that had windows boot inside Active again... And... Now Im doing back-up of my Win11 Pro with MBR structure(whole disk) to do smarter convert of MBR to GPT again. Now I will do my laptop faster loading XD 1 minute is quite time.

Hi Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge with us all!
I believe my reg files were corrupted after an update on my 2013 win10 upgraded Samsung NP350 laptop. For some reason the only thing I can access is the bios where I can modify the boot device to a usb but the win10 installations won’t even go past the window logo and a little turning wheel. So no startup repair or recovery or cmd option. The screen is turned on but blank. No specific noise from the hdd. What could someone recommend? (There was of course no installation cd with the laptop upon purchase and there’s no media installation download on the Samsung support. I am about to go nuts!

Fail...BUT, let me explain. I followed all of your directions and it didn't work. Then, I went back and watched the video again. It was GREAT that you mentioned that you must boot your flash drive up in MBR and not UEFI if you're fixing MBR. That was the game changer!!! BUT, after I went thru all of the steps, instead of resulting in successfully completed when answering Y to assign the windows installation to the MBR, I got the response: "The requested system device cannot be found" ... Ughhhh. Now what? Answer: In my case, nothing. Because (I think) the MBR had the windows installation by default as C:\windows...so I just ended up rebooting after taking the flash drive out. If my windows install was on another partition, I don't know what would have happened. Resulting boot time? 317 seconds to get back into windows. lol .... Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are the man!!

would AOMEI Partition assistant be able to help with this? I have a PC that had SSD and 2 HDD inside and when I installed the SSD on it... the MBR i guess wasn't installed on SSSD but instead on both HDDS... this causes problems since I would like to remove those old HDDS... But if I remove them my PC won't boot... Will this tutorial work on it? could I do it with AOMEI Partition Asssistant? i'm tryng to find as easy solution as possible that will not cause any data loss...

To resolve issues with the Master Boot Record (MBR) in Windows, you can follow these steps:
    1. Use Windows Automatic Repair:
    - Boot your Windows system and enter Automatic Repair mode.
    - Select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Startup Repair.
    2. Use Command Prompt:
    - Create a Windows 10 USB bootable media.
    - Launch Command Prompt and run the following commands:
    - bootrec /RebuildBcd
    - bootrec /fixMbr
    - bootrec /fixboot
    3. Repair MBR on BIOS systems with MBR-partitioned drives:
    - Launch Command Prompt and run:
    - bootrec /FixMbr
    - bootrec /FixBoot
These steps should help you repair and fix any issues with the Master Boot Record on your Windows system.

Your instructions are out of date!
The "bootrec /fixboot" command can no longer be used for boot repair, because the command always shows "Access is denied". Microsoft has prevented the use of the "bootrec /fixboot" command on both GPT and MBR disks.
Windows 10 version 1703 (April 5, 2017) and earlier installation media.
      - bootrec /fixboot -> "The operation completed successfully"
Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 1709 (October 17, 2017) and newer installation media.
      - bootrec /fixboot -> "Access is denied"
      ==============================
You don't need the "bootrec /fixboot" and "bootrec /rebuildbcd" commands if you use the BCDBOOT command.
      BCDBOOT [/s [/f ]]
If the system partition has been corrupted, you can use BCDBOOT to recreate the system partition files. BCDBOOT copies the boot files from the Windows partition to the system partition and creates the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store in the same partition.
The BCDBOOT command works on both GPT and MBR disks.
      ==============================
