This was an absolute life saver. I installed a new psu with the wrong cables and something happened to my ssd so that it couldn’t boot anymore. Just went straight to bios. I spent nearly 10 hours troubleshooting and testing components before I found this video. My boot files must have been corrupted somehow and this fixed them. Can’t thank you enough.

Thx for teaching an old dog a new trick. Usually when the /bootfix fails on me, I assume it's because the OS is just beyond repair. Now that I know it's because of 1703, that's a game changer for me! We can collab ANY time you want, brother! 👍💪

I wasn't aware of what was causing the problem ether until I did the research for this video. Many guides would mention the 1703 issue but were never clear on it. It wasn't until I tried it on a 1703 disk that it worked. The video almost didn't get made because of it.

Hello Rich, I can't tell ya how much I appreciate this awesome video. Early July of this year (2024) we had a lightning strike that took out 3 routers, 2 computers and a UPS. After almost 2 months of waiting on replacement parts (2 motherboards, new memory) I'm finally getting things up and running again.
I haven't tried the repair solution you shared in this video, however it looks extremely promising and will actually work.
Hopefully I wouldn't need direct help from you, if I did happen to need a little extra guidance would you be willing to answer my questions and assist me?
Hopefully I can manage to hold my mouth right as I'm performing the steps you have shared in this video. In a brief explanation the system I am working on is mom's computer and it is a dual boot (Windows XP Pro 32 bit and Windows 10 Home 64 bit) there are 2 hard drives, each drive is a terabyte in size and each drive has 2 partitions split as closely as possible to 500 GB per partition on each drive. A recent discovery was the XP is on one of the drives and 10 on the other drive.
I didn't intend to do that as I intended both OSs to be on one drive and the other drive would be exclusive for storage.
Anyway I have a slight concern that the dual boot as described could cause the operation of repairing the BOOTMGR to fail. Anyway thanks for taking the time to read my post 😃😄.

@@CyberCPUHey there Mr Rich I'm not sure if you read my previous post, but I have an update.
I have managed to get both OSs on one drive now on different partitions on a new 2 terabyte drive (the original drives will be kept for backups), anyway now it is as it should have been from the start (both OSs on the same drive). I'm going to go nuclear on the original BCD because Win 10 still refuses to boot it says "inaccessible boot device" at least now it shows this on the same hard drive where as before I had to have both of the original drives connected to have the "inaccessible boot device" message. Thank you in advance if you've taken the time to read this 2nd message.

I love this guy's tutorials man. I haven't used Windows in years as a daily driver and if I get such errors I'll simply revert to a clean snapshot for my VM, but this guy simply has the type of energy for a TH-camr that you want to watch his videos even if you'll never have to resolve such problems.

If I had MILLION$ to give you, it would be yours!!!! Holy cats!! I was dead in the water and you resurrected me!! 🙂 I knew what the problem was...just had to figure out a way to resolve it. This video was PHENOMENAL!!! Luckily my Windows installation CD is pre 1703, so I didn't have to fight that issue. I did, however, have to side track a little off your video and find a fix for an "Element Not Found" error when running BOOTREC /FIXBOOT. But once that issue was resolved, everything launched with success exactly as you demonstrated in your video. Just friggin' YUUUUUUUGE KUDOS to you!!!!! Thank you ~

Thanks for posting all this. Even as a technical person, what this tells us is that windows is inordinately complex and for no good reason. My daughter's win 10 disk just gave up and fortunately before it died, I managed to clone it. So to avoid all this horrendous boot nightmare, that's what I recommend - buy another disk of the same size and clone your OS. Microsoft will probably say that's an infringement of the license agreement, but I play fair - the clone goes in my desk drawer until I need it. For those who might complain that this method requires the purchase of another disk, my answer, from my experience of Windows disk failures, is that you're going to need one to replace the failed drive, AND its much harder to reconfigure your new disk when the old one fails. Happy disk drives :) :)

Man, I've watched both of those vids of yours (the other being fixing the UEFI partition mentioned in the beginning) and can I just say a massive thank you for how clear and helpful these tutorials were made. You really helped me out a lot as I was stuck on my new z790-a wifi 2 not wanting to either see the installed ssd's or later it was giving me massive issues with booting. For me nothing wanted to boot unless I did in manually in the bios. Simple restarting; once I got into windows was giving me the blue error recovery screen. I've spent at least 3 days frustrating over it but thanks to this vid and applying it to my problemsI think I've finally managed to get to a state where it boots, and restarts as intended. Windows is still in my case not on the drive I wanted as I installed windows onto an ssd and not a NvMe stick but at least I can move on to that minor problem, as the booting issues are gone. Thank you again!
I think my problems were due to multiple partitions not communicating correctly together as the boot files were in different place to my windows files. Once I followed your steps, it helped.

Thank you for saving my life. I do something different way to save my Windows because i have slightly different case.
*1.* I have 1 disk running Windows (labeled NVME1 {C:\}) and then i install another Windows on new disk (labeled NVME2 {F:\}). After that, everytime reboot Windows giving me 2 option boot : NVME1 and NVME2
*2.* I remove all partition on NVME1 and because i want to use it as data disk, but not boot disk.
*3.* After step 2 i got boot error because system can't find booting disk.
*Solution :* i follow some of your instruction
    0. Plug my Windows 10 flashdisk (H:\) and boot it, choose repair my windows, choose command prompt
    1. Go to boot disk {NVME2}, select vol, set *active* volume using Diskpart
    2. Copy all files in directory */boot* in my _flashdisk_ to installation disk {NVME2} using copy command (copy H:\boot\*.* F:\)
now after i have standard BCD file, i execute
    3. F:\bootrec /rebuildbcd
    4. F:\bootrec /fixmbr
    5. F:\bootrec /fixboot
    6. restart, and Windows will automate rebuild and check sistem after login

One volumes is 100 MB, and other one is 499 MB. Smaller has in its directory EFI directory and system vol info and recycle bin. It should be the system reserve but it doesnt have any boot related files. Could your method work on my case?

Thanks so much for the video! In my case, I have a dual boot Windows 10/Linux Mint system. While trying to upgrade to Mint v22, GRUB got corrupted. I then removed Mint and GRUB, leaving only Windows 10. But that apparently messed up the MBR. I followed your instructions, but when I reached the bootrec /fixboot command, I got "Element Not Found" error. It turned out that my Windows boot partition wasn't active. So I used your last instruction (diskpart> active) to set it. After that, bootrec /fixboot completed successfully. Following the rest of your instructions, Windows was able to boot!

Thank you, this was very helpful. bootrec /fixboot is not giving access denied, and it looks like I'm doing the correct steps in the correct order, however, my Windows 10 Pro still won't boot. It gets past the bootmgr, brings up the blue Windows logo for a bit, then goes to a black screen with the circling dots and stays there. The hard drive light flashes now and then, but it just keeps a black screen. I also tried formatting the System Partition, and rebuilding it with these commands, with from version 1703. But it still won't boot.
Have you any ideas of what could be causing this, and how to fix or at least diagnose it?

A great guide but in my case I got dead CMOS battery on my laptop and so I could no longer boot my system with GPT and EFI without changing the default setting every time, so I decided to go back to MBR. For that you have to remove any partition that is related to boot and keep only Windows partition itself, then in diskpart creat par prim, format fs=ntfs, assign letter (whatever you like), active. Afterwards use the command "bootsect /nt60 your letter of choice: /mbr" and then "bcdboot D:\windows /s C:" as follows in this video guide. After that I did fixmbr and fixboot just in case, still haven't fixed the fact that scanos can't find any system but finally my system booted up just fine.

Mine was a bit different problem but this helped!
    Thank you!
For anyone else who stumbles upon this
My issue was that my system wouldnt take the win 10 bootable drive in either uefi or legacy mode
For UEFI to work, it needs a fat32 bootable drive
And latest Win 10 ISOs have files bigger than 4 gb
But fat32 cant have files bigger than 4 gb
thus rufus would force the drive into ntfs format
    thus stopping a UEFI boot
Win 10 1703 works because the biggest file in it "install.wim" is smaller than 4 gb
therefore it can have the fat32 format
thus it can boot in UEFI mode
Im not really sure what stopped me booting it in mbr legacy mode tho

Thanks Rich! I was about to give up on trying to restore an HP Compaq Pro 6305 Small Form Factor using a "repair cd" when I came across this video. Even though I didn't fully understand the logic of all the commands, I did what your said to do here, brought it back, and it boots up fine now. I am not savvy on how to "Run an older ISO," but when you instructed us to put c:>bootrec /scanos it said "Total Identified Windows Installations:0" YOU then pointed out the BCD file at the top of the list. Well my list didn't have a BCD file there but I just continued following your instructions as if it did, and renamed BCD (a file NOT ON THE LIST, and I didn't delete/break it as you did "on purpose for your video"): But I did this rename anyway expecting it to fail since I was renaming something not there... I entered: c:\Boot>ren BCD BCD.bk and got no error message, but unfortunately, I didn't check to see if BCD or BCD.BK was there now or not. I did the c:>bootrec /fixmbr and it said "Completed successfully." When I did c:\>bootrec /fixboot, it said "Access Denied" like you said it might I just followed you and continued rebuilding the BCD. Even though I had these different things happen during this process, bottom line the PC is running great, so it must have rebuilt all it needed! I was in telecom for many years and have never seen such tremendous support as you have given here...Extremely Impressed Thx again...

This video saved a huge amount of my medical academic data which became inaccessible. Thanks a lot to you.
I absolutely love the way you explain things. Especially explaining the possible reasons for the hiccups one may face when trying to repair their system. I also appreciate the way you explain things step by step with visuals to go alongside the narration. Keep up the good work bro. Such things always help in a crunch when immediate professional help cannot be available.
The issue you highlighted regarding bootrec not being available in newer versions of windows got me thinking a bit. Are there more such tools or applications which have been deprecated by the original publishers? Especially ones which become essential in such scenarios. If yes, it would be extremely helpful, I believe, to compile a list of such tools and the ISO versions which would be required to access them. As a layman with just some working knowledge of tinkering systems to get my desktop up and running, a person like me would definitely appreciate knowing which ISOs should always be at hand. Storage space (both physical and digital) is at a relative premium for me and I would rather keep a few essential ISOs saved on my disks rather than all available ISOs as an IT repair professional might.
I guess I am effectively requesting you to make a video listing out such applications and tools and which ISOs are these available in.
Thanks a lot again. I wish you even more success and hope that you continue educating us.

  • @platterjockey

Yes!Yes!Yes! It worked! Haha! What happened in my case is my PC was doing a system update and the mbr failed. I had tried three other TH-cam tutorials with no luck. I did, however, have a newer USB installation file, and I had to make a couple of skips, but it worked. Now, you should make a video on exactly what to do after recovering from a catastrophic scenario to lessen the chances of it happening again.

I used windows installation to access the hidden partitions and erased all of them for disk 1, disk 0 was my new disk and all partitions un touched. I restarted and no bootible media found. How does formatting one drive effect a completely separate drive????

Here is the thing: on 16:41 minute it shows that return figure "1", but to me it returned "0", and even so, I continued your indications further more to the end and interestingly enough I still was able to boot again my laptop in Windows 10! Strange or what?! However since I've got Windows 10 on "C" partition and Win XP on other partition - though it should've been on "C" one since the right order of installation should be first Windows XP, necessarily on "C" drive and then any OS(Win 7, Win 10, Win 11 etc) on any other partition - can you please guide me how would I be able to or what and how should I do to see both operating systems and so to be able to choose which one to start with/to booth with?! So far I just can't see that menu to choose from either Win 10 or Win XP and it's booting default in Win 10. Kindly awaiting for your professional reply.

Or here's another scenario your computer gets hacked the hacker finds your MBR file and deletes it! And if that happens when you log off your computer and when you go to log back in your computer you will either be directed to your bios or your windows advanced settings menu. At that point it's a total shit show from there but it will definitely build up your knowledge and education within computing and IT.

(note) - The number of lines of code in an average operating system (OS) can vary significantly based on its complexity and the specific OS in question. Let’s explore some examples:
      1-Windows 10:
The fundamental components of Windows 10, including memory and processor administration, are managed by the Windows 10 kernel.
The kernel of Windows 10 is estimated to consist of approximately 3 million lines of code1.
This includes both code developed by Microsoft and code contributed by external developers.
      2-Mac OS X (Apple’s operating system):
Mac OS X contains an impressive 86 million lines of code2.
Most of these lines are programmed in C and assembler, which are less tidy but more efficient languages.
      -(Other notable examples ARE)
3-Google Chrome (browser) runs on approximately 6.7 million lines of code (upper estimate)3.
4-The Android operating system runs on 12-15 million lines3.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) uses 50 million lines3.
5-Facebook’s codebase (excluding backend code) Comprises 62 million lines3.
-Now Remember, a million lines of code, if printed, would span about 18,000 pages of text, which is more than what was needed to run old technologies like the Space Shuttle or even the game engine of Quake
      - However, modern software used in everyday life today often requires much more code to function effectively. 🖥💻
Keep in mind that these numbers represent the complexity and scale of different systems, and the actual lines of code can vary based on specific implementations and optimizations.
-Now lets dive in to how all of this happens in the first Let’s delve into the intriguing world of cybersecurity and explore the notorious vulnerabilities you’ve mentioned: LogoFAIL, EternalBlue, Blue Latern, and Pegasus malware.
      -1. EternalBlue: The Windows Catastrophe
EternalBlue is a software vulnerability that shook the digital landscape. Here’s what you need to know:
Origin: Discovered by the United States National Security Agency (NSA), it was part of their secret toolkit.
Target: EternalBlue exploits the Windows Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, which facilitates shared access to files, printers, and resources within a network.
Exploit Mechanism: By manipulating specially crafted packets, an attacker can execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable Windows system.
DoublePulsar: EternalBlue’s sinister companion, DoublePulsar, acts as a backdoor implant tool. Once EternalBlue opens the door, DoublePulsar injects and runs malicious code on the target system.
Lack of Segmentation: The flaw allows lateral movement within a network, enabling malware to spread from one system to another.
      Why Was It So Critical?
Windows Popularity: With Windows being ubiquitous, the vulnerability put countless systems at risk.
Patch Challenges: Despite Microsoft releasing patches, many organizations lagged in implementing them or used unsupported Windows versions.
Weaponized Nature: Originally designed for espionage, EternalBlue’s sophistication made it a potent tool.
      -2. LogoFAIL: Stealthy Exploitation
      LogoFAIL takes a different route:
Bypassing Security Measures: This exploit cunningly evades hardware and software security solutions implemented by CPUs, operating systems, and third-party security software.
Nearly Impossible to Detect or Remove: Unlike flashy attacks, LogoFAIL operates silently, making it a nightmare for defenders.
      3. Blue Latern: A Mysterious Mention
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find specific details about Blue Latern. It seems to be elusive, lurking in the shadows of the cyber realm. If you have more context, feel free to share!
-4. Pegasus: The Spyware of Nightmares
Pegasus is a notorious spyware developed by the Israeli firm NSO Group. Here’s its dark tale:
Capabilities: Pegasus infiltrates smartphones, gaining access to calls, messages, emails, and even activating the camera and microphone.
Targets: Governments and intelligence agencies deploy Pegasus for surveillance, often against journalists, activists, and dissidents.
Zero-Click Attacks: Pegasus can infect devices without any user interaction-simply receiving a malicious message triggers the exploit.
In summary, these vulnerabilities and malware exemplify the perpetual cat-and-mouse game between cybersecurity experts and threat actors. As technology evolves, so do the risks. Vigilance, timely patching, and robust defenses remain our best allies in this digital battleground.
