    If you look at the side of the Guristas ships you'll see that they still have their Caldari names eg Worm still has M3rl1n on its left side. The RS also has its Sc0rp1on tag (lower tail iirc) which points to Caldari origin

    I pronounce Gila as Yeela and Jita as Yeeta for maximum incorrectness and for the inevitable Gif to Yif reply.
    Also the idea that the Worm is actually Wyrm but was misspelled by pirates is my new personal headcannon.

      Haha excellent headcannon! Jita is officially "Jitter" not "Jee-tah", but damned I will always say Jee.

    I always enjoy your videos, thanks. A Loggerhead is a large sea turtle, which is a reptile. So it does fit but not venomous. There is a worm in the oceans that has been the bain of wooden ships for centuries. Boring holes through hulls. Might fit the ships neme.

      Good point with the Worm there! And yes, right on the Loggerhead. I suppose it's still a big reptile 😅

    Ahoy there Cpt. Thanks for putting this out this video, great stuff as always.
    The angel cartel ships definitely havee the ring of angels in the old testament to me, which would make sense given the whole angel thing. Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see those names in good omens or something.
    Oh and the comparison of the angels to the OPA is spot on. I may or may not have rolled gallente main who mostly flys minmatar ships after reading thise books.

    Welcome back to making videos! Worm spelling may be a translation thing from Icelandic to English? If I recall correctly in older texts worm or wyrm can be seen to mean not only dragons but basically anything reptilian and vaguely snakelike etc in myth and real critters (which to some really old texts are effectively the same in the eyes of the creators of the texts etc).
    Like the Ashimmu and Bhaalgorn, just don't get out in them much.

    • @nikushim6665
      @nikushim6665 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep its proto-germanic in origin, Wyrm just meaning to turn or bend. As it diverged into other languages it became wurm/worm. In a lot of modern cases it does just mean snake or snake like

    • @captainbenzie
      @captainbenzie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's really interesting etymology, thank you!!

  • @halkihaxx5
    @halkihaxx5 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    One point, calling snakes worms is an Old Norse thing. The company being Icelandic, and having many other Norse mythology stuff it makes the most sense. The same wors is used for dragons as well, ormur.

    • @nakenmil
      @nakenmil 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      "worm"/"wurm"/"wyrm" in the sense of dragon is also just an old word for "snake". A lot of mentioned of "ormr" in Old Norse just refers to serpents, especially adders. Especially early on, a lot of Germanic (Norse, Anglo-Saxon, etc.) dragons were literally just imagined as impossibly large snakes.

    The name Worm I think can be taken at face value, especially if you think of the many flavors of parasitic or carnivorous worms on land and sea, hell worms may have just made their way into New Eden just fine with how well some of them can survive.

    worm is another word for snake - at least in scandinavian countries. You also have Wyrm - a snake or dragon in english. We have two snakes in Denmark - one being the hugorm / "striking worm". The world sepent of nordic mythology is also called the midgårdsorm or worm of midgard.

    I read that the Angel Cartel use abstract slang words. They make up their own, like street slang.

  •  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I really enjoyed this; I was really into the main empire names videos. I am really interested in language and words especially in terms of names. Yes, Thank you Captain! Venomous NOT poisonous! Well said, who is eating who is what really matters there! I believe the Mamba have neurotoxins as Venom. Yikes! Great video sir! Of all the Pirates I am not really a fan of the look of the Sansha, they are a little too I don't know... Spikey? They just don't seem to fit the Eve ships to me. The names are great, but the ship models don't do it for me! Then again, I LOVE the look of the Tristan so others would say I have terrible taste :)

    • @captainbenzie
      @captainbenzie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tristan is an awesome looking ship! The great thing about EVE is how diverse the ships are, design wise. Many space games are very "one note" with their ship designs. EVE has so much variety!

    Fun fact 1: mambas are elapids i.e. the family of snakes that includes cobras (both true cobras and king cobras), coral snakes, sea snakes, kraits and death adders. Rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, bushmasters and true adders are vipers.
    Fun fact 2: gila monsters are one of the few identified (conventionally) venomous lizards (excluding snakes, which yes, are *technically* lizards); whilst not fatal it is described as incredibly painful.
    Fun fact 3: as of the last few years the komodo dragon has been identified as being potentially venomous; it has glands in the lower jaw that secrete toxic proteins that are on the border of being considered venom. Scientists are currently arguing about this. It is however not the largest reptile; it IS the largest lizard (although given the technicality of snakes, the green anaconda is longer but not as heavy), but the saltwater crocodile is by a large margin the largest extant reptile.
    Loggerhead doesn't refer to any snake as far as I can find; it refers to either a mid-sized sea turtle or a species of shrike. One is a reptile (well, technically both are.....), the other is insanely vicious for its' size; shrikes are small birds (closely related to crows) that catch anything they can fly off with and impale said prey on sharp objects. If you Google 'loggerhead snake' what you find is documentation of loggerhead shrikes impaling snakes on things like barbed wire.

    Technically, at least the suffixes of the Angel Cartel's ships are from earth:
    -el is from, don't quote me on that, Hebrew, just compare to daniel, israel (Kisrael!), azrael, samuel....
    -bal is out of phonician/cartgenian: Hannibal, Hasdrubal and surely several others which don't come to my mind yet.
    And with enough linguistics and etymology studied, I guess you also find out the words before....
