The modding scene for Celeste has some of the best maps! For anyone wanting to learn tech in depth, the 2020 spring collab is an amazing and polished project. It has 5 chapters based on different difficulties, each having a gym that helps teach them! Its amazing
To learn mechanics, definitely complete the game (inc c9) and i recommend the modded map spring 2020 collab (they have gyms for each difficulty that teach you mechanics) i managed to learn a LOT from these :)
Tip for controller stick users: GameCube controllers with the notches are VERY useful because it gives the precision of the dpad and is a joystick. I also found the face button layout pretty useful for just going through the game.

Thank you! Hyper b-hops have a lot of great uses in any% when you need a lot of speed and height (especially in Reflection). Top level runners use em all over the place!

This is a really good overview on speedrunning basics! I just got into speedrunning Celeste a Few Days ago and my current PB is 1:32:sth, but I'll try to learn (and master) the tricks you showed! I didn't even know I had to bind 2 jumps, as it's not needed in a 'casual' playthrough. Thanks!

I finished this game casually in february 2022. Gonna finish it again casually and then going for the deeper stuff. Looking forward to finally speedrun a game. And I really enjoyed the story and soundtrack of this game aswell as the top of the notch movement.

Wow, what an informative video! I’ve watched speedruns for a while now, but never actively ran a game. However, I’m fairly comfortable with wavedashing and those big wall jump (BWJs?) things, and the other moves seem possible to learn. I may actually try out some attempts on Celeste once I watch some routing videos!

Half of this video was just a massive does of Dopamine. I decided to start speedrunning the game after my 20th or so clear on Farewell. Was a REALLY nice base to just have all the basics down in order to get my runs low. To anyone that plans to speedrun, let me give you this advice. Try to beat everything beforehand. Like he said, there are mechanics that are taught IN GAME if you decide to go into that endgame content. If you want to get decent times anyway, your skill level should be to the point where most of these things are actually quite easy. But I never knew there was a button for demodashing. This is a good thing to know. Very good. I gave up on trying to do demodashes myself.
Only half???? 😂 but 100% agree with this. Finishing the game causally is also just a nice experience before you get into these mechanics and then start finding a lot of rooms a bit more trivial. Oh, and yes 100% use the new binding! Demo dashes are soooo important in advanced running and get even more fun with things like demo hypers. But that’ll be in the next video. Best of luck running! 😁
@@ariamelody5560 What platform are you playing the game? This binding was made an option in version 1.4, and so far PC and Switch have that update. I’m not too sure about PlayStation or Xbox
Here are some tips for people who didn’t really understand it: super dash is easier when you jump only a little so jump for like a couple frame and then dash into the ground, Hyper dash helps to know that you crouch after dashing then jump. Idk reverses. Wave dash is jump AND LITERALLY like 2 frames after jumping dash and press jump, continue doing this and you get a wave dash It may not be they way he explained it but it’s the way i do it and it works!
I somehow learnt the superdash mechanic that keeps ur dash after launching urself, on the 2nd chapter by pure accident. It never rly had a specific use in the base game so now it makes a lot of sense being a mechanic used mainly in speedruns
ty for the spoiler warning, I planned on clearing farewell after clearing all c stages since I thought it would be more fitting thematically to do it last. I guess I'll go clear it and comeback to the video.
You forgot to mention that the dash pauses the game (and the timer) for few seconds, so it doesn't look faster doing repeated hypers, like at the start of chapter 3A. But it is faster doing constant hypers than just bhopping between each one.
Oh yea definitely! I’d highly recommend trying everything with the vanilla stuff they teach you first since relearning a lot of the game with higher level strats is super fun and rewarding, but everyone’s got their own way of playing the game!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Corner Kicks do not require a second jump button. But if done with just one button you need to hold the jump button for long enough to reach past the corner and then quickly release it and press again. Which is way harder than using a second button.

It's been a while since I played on the switch and I honestly didn't notice the revamped control settings. I love that they streamlined demos!
Oh yea it’s soooooo much better now! Movement optimization is on a whole ‘nother level using the demo button too

d-pad centric controller with offset sticks (for feather) is what i find best for celeste :)

For spike jumps and corner kicks i suggest if you have a controller with turbo mode set your 2nd jump to turbo it helps a lot

I recommend dashing with right bumper and grabbing with left bumper.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Corner Kicks do not require a second jump button. But if done with just one button you need to hold the jump button for long enough to reach past the corner and then quickly release it and press again. Which is way harder than using a second button.

No problem! It’s easy to get overwhelmed but just take each mechanic one step at a time and you should be set!
