The sheer strength of will it took to explain that whole "hold Z the entire game" bit and not reference "half a button press" is impressive. My friend TJ will rest easy today.
To be fair, half a button press would be the equivalent to no grabs, but unlike celest, it would actually be interesting for half a button press to matter.
8:14 There’s actually a hard-coded reason for this working as it should: spikes only interact with you if you are moving in their direction. That’s how the one-way spikes in dream blocks in Ch 2 work, because you’re going the opposite direction. It’s also what makes Chapter 1’s dashless golden possible. EDIT: Another comment says that it’s if you’re *facing* their direction, which *might* be the case? I don’t know, all my knowledge is from watching speedrunners and not playing myself, so either could be true.
But could it be also coyote time. Like platfomer program something named coyote time: when you jump but aren't in touch whit the platform you still jump. Is to make the game less frustrating so the player don't say "wtf i tap jump"
@@Samix.7 not really. You can be fully touching the spikes as long as you're facing the same way as them. This can be seen easily on the wind rooms where if the wind pushes you too some spikes you won't die unless you turn. If the wind is strong enough you can even climb with neutral jumps
No, you’re right about the edit, it’s when you’re moving the same direction as the spikes are facing. That just inherently means you’re facing the spikes unless moving vertically, which is why that’s a common misconception.
Oh my gosh chapter 2 was so beautifully in depth LOVED the beautiful flourishes of your voice as you discussed the complex maneuvering required to get around.

@@littlegaybee.they actually are lmao. all players use this mechanic in normal play in Chapter 2 with spiked dream blocks, and it’s required to 100% the game by collecting the winged golden strawberry
For anyone interested, the way that the trick at 8:13 works is that in Celeste, if you are moving in the same direction as a spike is pointing, it won't hurt you. You can see examples of this in some rooms where you go through platforms that have spikes on them. For this trick, because Madeline is moving the same way as the spikes, the player is able to perform a wallkick on the corner of the wall without being damaged
Carrying Theo definitely isn't climbing. That'd be like saying someone used a gun in Half-Life 2 just because they pulled a trigger on their controller even though they were using the crowbar at the time. Besides, wall jumping & wall sliding are a lot more similar to climbing than carrying Theo is & those are obviously allowed.

I can't believe I never thought of this. The dashless 1A was one of my favorite parts of Celeste, I'm totally using this as an excuse to play the whole game again with an added challenge. Thank you!!! Great video too :)
This is a really interesting and unique challenge I hadn't thought of! Also, sometimes things get bound to the same button, this challenge was about not climbing, not "don't use the Z button ever"
I actually attempted this challenge about a year ago and couldn’t figure out how to get past chapter four, so it’s cool to see that it was possible after all! Great video!
Pannenkoek has prepared me for this. You could say that grabbing Theo is only a 0.5x Z press. Because when counted in isolation, you have to count the entire action, but when considered in a full game run, it adds no additional Z presses since you can simply leech off the previous one :)
This is true, but you can't really afford to count half Z presses here. A half grab press is effectively identical to a full grab press, like was stated in the video, so allowing holding the Z button to count as a single continuous press means that it's just a normal run at that point.
"I could just hold down grab from before the game even starts and win with one grab" reminds me of the "half an A press" thing A Z press is a Z press, you can't say it's only a half
Yall are acting like it’s so crazy but my OCD when playing the switch version is so much that I HAVE to hold down ZR (grab) the entire time I play. If I don’t it feels really weird so it’s annoying when my finger starts hurting and I have to take a break
Anyone who expects a consistent upload schedule when constantly doing challenges this insane has brain damage. Love the work and effort put into these videos
That was an amazing video!!! It was so much fun to watch!!! It's so exciting seeing you go from my favourite game from my childhood (Kirby Superstar Ultra) to my current favourite game! 😍
Dude, your blend of engaging commentary, humor, and interesting challenges is excellent. You're doing cool stuff here, and someone should tell you that 👍
It's funny watching a challenge run for a game you actually know well and know most of the tricks for, but you still showed me a couple new things. Loved the video! I'm amazed at the restraint it must have taken to not make a 0.5 Z presses joke during the rant about holding it.
I accidently did this challenge as I forgot the grab mechanic was even a thing after coming back to it months later. I thought that was pretty creative game design at 5:51, still is now that I know what you're actually supposed to do.. after getting stuck at 6:16 I had to give up and figured out there was a grab button. Good find on getting around that wall.
MY FAVOURITE CHALLENGE RUNNER IS BACK! I'm one of your 18.3% female subscribers lmao, I found your Kirby TAS like everyone else and have been absolutely desperately waiting for the next vid to drop. Goddamn I hope you do another HK or Celeste run, but it'd be interesting to see a Mario Odyssey run or something. Platforming is such a haven for challenge runs and I love your narrative styles! Good on you mate, hope to see more from you!
I think your rules for this challenge are perfect - you really captured the true goal of challenge runs like this, and the rules you chose reflect that brilliantly!
Dude this video is incredible, you have a great sense of humor! Nothing beats watching someone find a crazy new way to make an already difficult game even harder.
5:46 for the first section here at the hotel i always just dashed back and forth between screens to get height and grab the key. It's easier than dealing with the spikes hahah! Ive... never done it the legitemate way
I've seen this video about 8 times now. Would you consider doing another celeste video? Something about the combination of your content and celeste just does it for me.
sample : would you want me to say "reverse extended hyperjump"? me not watching that many celeste vids : yeah that's stupid no me after : yes it's more confusing if you didn't
I’m actually curious how far you could get into farewell with this challenge. There isn’t a lot of wall space. You don’t need to climb a whole lot. I can think of maybe one room that you have to hold onto a wall for any period of time. Completely fair not to even attempt it though 😅
I loved this challenge, did it myself and it took me 3hours (I didn't do the 9th chapter) 1 of which was spent on the stupid summit temple room. Except this part, I found every challenging room fun to grind and I want to thank you for proposing this challenge :)
9:53 This is actually just a reverse wavedash 11:29 This is also just a reverse wavedash 12:20 This is also just a reverse wavedash 12:34 This is also just a reverse wavedash 16:08 This is actually a reverse extended superdash A reverse extended hyperjump/hyperdash is when you crouch dash along the ground until you regain your dash, and then jump in the opposite direction of the dash.
This inspire me to do my own run before watching the video and I want to note that the room at 14:58 is a lot easier if you wall jump off of the floor and dash up into the dash block, which doesn’t force you into the spikes. Just for anyone else wanting to try!
Dustyhobo music kewl. Also amazing video, editing, pacing and not wasting time as well as explaining this more advanced tricks with more that just “basically i go fest” while not making it boring.

Great video and music choices
17:22 I feel like Sample's about to talk about parallel universes any time now.
An A press is an A press. You can't say it's only half.
26:14 that level?
oh no.
We don't talk about that.
Finally The return of Sample with his challenges!
Always cool to see more Celeste content like this, awesome video
I actually attempted this challenge about a year ago and couldn’t figure out how to get past chapter four, so it’s cool to see that it was possible after all! Great video!
We gonna talk about how every time he does a reverse extended hyper jump he put that on screen and you can here a vine boom effect 12:20 😂
Pannenkoek has prepared me for this. You could say that grabbing Theo is only a 0.5x Z press. Because when counted in isolation, you have to count the entire action, but when considered in a full game run, it adds no additional Z presses since you can simply leech off the previous one :)
the fact that i fully understand this reference frightens me honestly
This is true, but you can't really afford to count half Z presses here. A half grab press is effectively identical to a full grab press, like was stated in the video, so allowing holding the Z button to count as a single continuous press means that it's just a normal run at that point.
Well then ""TJ HENRY YOSHI"" if that is your real name...
same
The main problem is that this is a ‘No Climbing’ run. Lifting Theo up isn’t climbing.
Honestly this video made me want to buy and play Celeste and I'm glad I did so thanks dude and I hope to see some more entertaining content from you.
"I could just hold down grab from before the game even starts and win with one grab" reminds me of the "half an A press" thing
A Z press is a Z press, you can't say it's only a half
If you don't initiate OR end the press throughout the entire game, it's only a third.
@Pushiswin watch for rolling rocks in 0.5 a presses
Yall are acting like it’s so crazy but my OCD when playing the switch version is so much that I HAVE to hold down ZR (grab) the entire time I play. If I don’t it feels really weird so it’s annoying when my finger starts hurting and I have to take a break
Your videos makes me smile through the avg work day. Thank you!
Your commentary still eclipses mine when feeling at my best. Godspeed, Sample. Your challenges are superior on this website.
probably the best celeste video i've seen. awesome work 👍
Anyone who expects a consistent upload schedule when constantly doing challenges this insane has brain damage. Love the work and effort put into these videos
16:19 more respect to Theo, He is more than just "a dude".
That was an amazing video!!! It was so much fun to watch!!!
It's so exciting seeing you go from my favourite game from my childhood (Kirby Superstar Ultra) to my current favourite game! 😍
15:55
Literally my thought process throughout the entirety of Farewell. Brain-numbing bass boosting included.
I love this channel! I was in dire need of some more video game challenge run content, and I absolutely adore Celeste! Good shit dude
9:53 Technically I believe this is called a reversed wavedash, a hyper is performed from the ground instead.
I haven't seen the video yet but because it's Celeste i know it's going to be cool
i like it where every time he would do a reverse dash jump it would say it for a little bit and do a quiet vine boom XD
Dude, your blend of engaging commentary, humor, and interesting challenges is excellent. You're doing cool stuff here, and someone should tell you that 👍
17:22 I can't wait to see "Celeste - Watch for Floating Strawberries - 0.5 Z Presses (Commentated)"
He's back babyy
Real happy to see you playing Celeste the game has been a huge hyperfixation of mine recently
i dont blame you for not doing chapter 9 that stuff took me two hours to beat on my first playthrough
I literally just started the game last week lol. Now i gotta watch the challenge run cause u did it, nice.
Beat Celeste a few days ago for the first time and I’ve spent just as many hours completing 4 b-sides for the core as I spent for the entire game
What a cool challenge that I have no intention of putting myself through😆 Very well done on your part!
Ive... never done it the legitemate way
Same
Also, nice pfp
Yep, I was gonna say that
Me too
This is great! This makes me wanna go and finally finish chapter 9.
You may have spent hours on some of these rooms, but you also got to listen to the Celeste soundtrack for hours so it was totally worth it.
Switching to the melee theme song during the wave dash explanation was a very nice editing touch, well played
1:23
Very weirdly gender validating to be subscribed lmfao- thanks for the tiny burst of euphoria, and great video!
Ik this is a year ago but same
I love how every time there's a reverse extended hyperjump, you can hear a faint vine boom.
0:03 HE SAID IT, HE SAID THE THING
HOLY MOLY
This was SUPER entertaining, Props to u for going to all that trouble and spending so many hours on this challenge.
1:17 babe new hrt just dropped
I've seen this video about 8 times now. Would you consider doing another celeste video? Something about the combination of your content and celeste just does it for me.
12:33 reverse extended hyper jump
sample : would you want me to say "reverse extended hyperjump"?
me not watching that many celeste vids : yeah that's stupid no
me after : yes it's more confusing if you didn't
the mantis lords boss music at 5:20. good taste
Prob cuz the climb is like mantis claw lol
Sometimes even on my 20th rewatch of these videos I forget how much I love them, then I hear Melee music when introducing wavedashing and I remember.
9:53 This is actually just a reverse wavedash
11:29 This is also just a reverse wavedash
12:20 This is also just a reverse wavedash
12:34 This is also just a reverse wavedash
16:08 This is actually a reverse extended superdash
A reverse extended hyperjump/hyperdash is when you crouch dash along the ground until you regain your dash, and then jump in the opposite direction of the dash.
🤓
@@deltashield Thanks!
Good human
This inspire me to do my own run before watching the video and I want to note that the room at 14:58 is a lot easier if you wall jump off of the floor and dash up into the dash block, which doesn’t force you into the spikes. Just for anyone else wanting to try!
This isn't a no z button challenge it's a no climbing challenge completely different challenges so this is acceptable. 16:50
19:50 this was the coolest thing ive ever seen
16:09 ummm akshually it’s a reverse extended super dash not hyper
I had a full giggle at the statistics, I literally subscribed after watching 1 of your videos then started binging your channel

Wow, man. Absolutely amazing in your dedication and skill. Not to mention your presentation of this! Great video.
For anyone wondering, the song at 10:38 is from Ace Attorney: Justice For All, and is called Search ~ Core 2002
Also one of my favourite game series
I was looking for this comment :D love Ace Attorney
@@Insert_Creativity_Here Glad to see another fan of the series !
love your videos dude! its so fun watching you be an actual pro at this game lmao
17:35 yeah pretty sure that counts as half a button press ;) lol
A z press is a z press. You can't say it's only a half
This was a super engaging video! Love your narration and dedication to the challenge.
1:20 I am a certified woman now, Pog
oddly enough it fits the theme of the game (wonder if that's intentional
Dustyhobo music kewl. Also amazing video, editing, pacing and not wasting time as well as explaining this more advanced tricks with more that just “basically i go fest” while not making it boring.
17:30 so what you're saying it's possible to beat Celeste with only half a Z-press?
I don't play videos games much, but watching your videos give me huge amounts of happiness, you are a genius
