  • Thank you for joining me for my FlossTube episode 12!
Today I have my WIPs (works in progress), working on "over one" on 46 count (Sarah Milthroup 1834), some tips for stitching over one and Algerian Eyelet/Smyrna Cross, helpful tools when removing stitches and a linen comparison when you need to substitute linen.
Thank you again for joining me, I hope you will sit back, relax and stitch as we visit together.

Thank you Karen for the linen comparisons. I don’t have a local needlework shop and have to purchase based on what is called for in the pattern or take a chance with the online images. Unfortunately it is very difficult to be confident in the selection without floss and linen in hand. Recently I bought four pieces of linen for upcoming projects and while the linen is beautiful and high quality, only two pieces worked. As we all know, colors vary depending on thread count, so it is challenging and expensive. You provide a real service to viewers with linen alternatives and stitch tutorials with substitutions.

      Hi Renee!
So glad you found us and thanks for your subscription. 🙂
You are right, the sun coming through the magnifier can really cause some problems. Your solution sounds like a good one.
I’ve seen suggestions of a tea towel, some stitchers actually make a little bag to put over the Magnifier, some use a drawstring bag that came with the light and others put a piece of fabric over it. . . . good solutions.
We debated about cutting table for a few years before we did it. I started keeping track of the exact channels I watched and realized we could find another solution that would still work for us and be more cost-effective.
TH-cam TV is what we decided on, with a Roku stick. That is working well, but we may reevaluate and just subscribe to a few channels we like and leave it it at that. One things for sure, there are many excellent options that are available that were not available even a few years ago.
Check out the Pluto channel/app, if you have a Roku or fire stick. ( it may even be available online, I’m not sure, we use Roku to see it )
Lots of channels with vintage ( as in 70/80/90s lol) TV shows and movies. I am surprised how many more channels they’ve added, it is all free, with a few ads here and there.
Thanks again for your nice note, I truly appreciate it

Hey Karen, I was just missing you yesterday and here you are! :) I can vouch for your observation about stitching over one with continental stitch. I have done my last two projects over one linen thread but I use two strands of floss. And you are right, they annoyingly slide under the warp thread of the linen with half cross stitch. So I started doing what I called in my head "the long way around", although to my mind it wasted thread on the back, but I found I didn't have my stitch vanishing under the linen vertical thread anymore. So that's called the continental stitch! I'd read the term when learning needlepoint but it never stuck with me.
To see what I'm doing I wear what is called on Amazon a pair of headband (or head mount) magnifiers. I can wiggle around and reposition myself easier.
I really like doing the over one continental stitch as it is half as many stitches and gI can finish faster! With two strands of floss I think that it fills in well to cover the linen better.
As for the orange fabric I thought of Halloween things, like your black crow. That was very cool.

    • @karencombsstudio
      @karencombsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kim! 🙂
I like your description of “going long ways around”, perfect description for the continental stitch.
Great idea about Halloween theme for the Foxy linen. I’ve pulled a few things that I will show in my next flush tube, probably in about two weeks.

Karen, I am late to the party on this video...but so happy to see the tutorial on the continental/tent stitch and the Algerian Eyelet/Smyrna Cross. But then... the linen color comparison was my very favorite! I am making a chart to keep on hand when trying to find linen substitutes. Thank you so very much for this valuable info. By the way, I am not being critical at all (and you may already know this) but when you showed your over one stitching on your sampler, my eye was drawn to that gorgeous medallion in the upper left corner. I noticed that one of the red curly-ques look like it was missing a stitch or two. I realize that sometimes those young girls made mistakes and reproduction sampler are charted to exactly match the original so your stitching may be perfectly fine. Just wanted to mention it in case you wanted to take a look. I think that HATS chart is beautiful and it is now on my wish list...that beautiful red house! Thanks again and see you next time!

Hi Barbara, so glad you enjoyed the video, it was helpful and thanks so much for your nice comment.
Very happy to hear the linen comparison was helpful. I am finding it helpful myself to compare which linens are similar to each other. Often finding the exact linen is difficult and knowing what is similar is very helpful.
Thanks for your note on the little curl. I did realize it was missing two stitches, I meant to fix it before I taped and then forgot. ☹️ However, I go back and add the missing stitches. Thanks for noticing and for your note about it.
Sarah Milthorp is a very beautiful sampler. It should be released to the public in January or so.

Thank you for your suggestions as to the linens. I did go to Traditional Stitches to find Lakeside since I haven’t been able to find it. Though I didn’t get the color you have, I found one that I liked and ordered. I’m eager to try it! The orange fabric put me in mind of a chart called “A Quaker Welcome” by Lilas Studio (I think). That’s the first thing that popped into my head, but I’m not sure if every color would contrast enough. Thank you again for the video!

Elizabeth Broadhead is such a pretty sampler. Looks like it’s verse is also “over 1” as in Sarah Milthorp. It takes a bit of concentration, but isn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
Yes, I think garden sleeves/long garden gloves will be a useful purchase 😉
I’m hoping I get a blossom or two on the hydrangeas, but I am just thankful this winter’s weather didn’t kill them. Everyone’s landscaping in this area suffered from our winter weather but much of it is coming back, albeit slowly.
