I'm a first time dog owner, my boy is 1,5 years now, and I started preparing many years before I got my Cavalier, Alfie. I thought I knew it all, and I was so ready for him. But I found out that you can only prepare so much, and as a first time dog owner, there will come many times where you come past something, you didn't expect with your new puppy. Alfie was the cutest little puppy, I was expecting a destruktive little guy, but he was so well behaved and non destruktive, it was amazingly easy! ❤ But I didn't ever think to expect all the problems with his food, first off he is a very very very picky eater, there is not much food he likes, I've been through 7-8+ different dog foods kibble and wet food to find something he accepted, and around food nr. 5-6 I find out that he has a sensitive digestive system, so I have to be extra carefull what he eats and I needed to find a food his stomach was okay with. I didn't expect all the visits to the Vet either, good ting I have a good inscurance, because in his first year of life, he had been visiting the Vet so many times I actually made money on his inscurance 😱 because he ate something on the walks, wasn't feeling well, or had too loose stool. But he was also more amazing than I expected, he was such a happy puppy, he had no fear, loved everyone, dogs, cats, humans, everyone. ❤ He is so easy to train, he really wants to please. 😍 He is helping me more that I could ever have hoped for. 😍 I'm not as strong a packleader as I expected, he totally have me wrapped around his paw, but what can I say, those big brown puppy eyes! 😘❤ Getting a puppy is hard work, but also more amazing than anyone can predict! 😘🐶
I agree with the socialisation point. Our lab was a very poorly puppy and didn't get much socialisation until he was around 5 to 6 months because he was to ill to leave the house, which resulted in him being nervous of people and basically everything else except dogs for some reason. When we got our beagle we were determined to socialize him as early as possible so we carried him around pet shops until he had all his vaccinations then he got to explore on the floor. He loves people although he can be nervous of dogs he's never met before, but he was like that when we brought him home :) herky and Milton are great dogs you guys did so well raising them.
Ivy’s a lot of trouble. A lot. She still has accidents in the house, a lot of energy (especially in the evening), messes with my underpants, and a lot more. But, she loves everyone, and wants to play, almost every single moment! She also grows up really fast! I remember my mom told me that Lucy ripped up her pants once when she was still a puppy. Lol.

I got my new cavalier 3 weeks ago and he’s a lot of work! I’m glad I got him now whilst I’m still physically active (I have a disability) as he’s very active and I need to watch him constantly for 12 hours to make sure we have no accidents 😅 He’s a menace haha
So I had a cavalier King Charles up until July 2018 He was the absolute best and no work at all really an absolute angel however at age 5 the breed develops a heart murmur which is why they are a kind of lazier dog breed but my dog didn’t develop this until his last week the vet couldn’t do anything as it was so sudden it starts with a cough and goes downhill just please be aware that cavaliers are amazing but watch out for coughs 💔
Emmaaa 061204 my cav as a grade 3 heart murmur and is on a tablet called petmedin. Although obviously it won't stop the murmur from progressing, it slows it down. So sorry about your fur baby
I had the same happen to me. My baby Harley was 10 when he passed suddenly in the night. We think it was a heart attack. He was scheduled for an echocardiogram a week later. Don’t let your vet tell you to wait until they show symptoms. Get your cavvie in for an echocardiogram ASAP as soon as you know they have a heart murmur. It’s scary but manageable with medication.
Not all cavalier King Charles develop a heart murmur at five years old. My dog didn't develop a heart murmur until she was nine and a half years old. Also my dog was diagnosed with last stages of heart failure at ten years old and tablets kept her alive for nine more months up until two weeks ago
I'm getting a cavie puppy as a gift to myself once I graduate from college, I found a breeder close to me and everything, they've kinda been my dream dogs since childhood, they're just too cute and I love their little personalities
I am really excited because I got a F1 mini goldendoodle and I am picking him up in 4 weeks (on Valentine’s Day!!) and I can’t wait! We are naming him Rocket! I having been begging my parents for over 4 years and I can’t believe they finally gave in!
Herky and Milton is so cute love it 💓 I have a pomeranian and he rarely barks only when he is really annoyed, he's well - potty trained, but the most annoying thing is he is very very picky about his food even his water.
Omg...we have a 9 week old mini aussie puppy. It is like having a newborn baby! It is a 24x7 job!!! Our pup is demanding, mischievous, bites, chews on everything, wakes up few times a night and start to cry and whine. I havent had a full night sleep since we picked him up a week ago. We love our puppy so much!!!

True information Mai! Every puppy is different and the first 4 to 6 months of training can seem like YEARS ...especially potty training! But oh the joy and love you get in return😆 so entertaining😄 Vet bills are real!!! Wish we could claim them as "dependants ":)

We bought a small hand held portable spot carpet cleaner (Rugdoctor) for any accidents etc. The same manufacturer markets a pro-enzymatic pet formula carpet detergent. Also useful for cleaning other stains and general cleaning etc.

Not sure if you have a video already-I know that you mentioned (in the past) certain raw hide treats can cause major digestive problems. It would be great to see recommendations of chew treats that are safe. (Other than bully sticks)
LOL. The video I needed 4 months ago 😂This is great! Did not realize how difficult puppies would be and I think Oakley was actually an easier puppy. He can be rotten, but if he zooms it still makes me laugh every time. Also--they DO grow so fast. Glad I got the few videos I did of him because I didn't take as many pictures. I'm okay with him being bigger because he is definitely more obedient and better potty trained. :)

Great tips Mai! With Burgundy it took lots of patience, she was so active and crazy but also very intelligent when it came to obedience and potty training which was good. How has the silver spray been working for Milton?
My girl Rosie (also a cavalier) does not pee ou poop outside EVER, for some reason, and she waits until we're home to do it. I've tried taking her outside and meet other dogs so if they did something she would copy, but no. What do I do?
My husband and I have a one year old Cavalier St. Charles Spaniel/ Lucy Lynn. Same color as yours. I try to walk her once a day but my health is not that good. One thing I wanted to share. I have had Epilepsy for 48 years , I’m 64 now. But when Lucy Lynn saw me have my first grand mal seizure,my husband, John said it was amazing the way Lucy Lynn got right beside me, stayed right beside me, until I fully woke up and was able to say her name. I had fallen apparently on my face and it was bleeding, so she kept licking it till I was clean. I truly believe she could easily believe she could be trained to be a seizure dog!! It good to have insurance because sooner or later with a Cavalier there's a really good chance it will need to be seen and treated by a Cardiologist and it's quite expensive.

The one my St annoying thing about the Cavalier King Charles is their paw maintenance. You should keep the fur on their paws short. It's s weekly and difficult job but if me at cavalier King Charles are like my Bonny was then they won't mind you clipping their fur on their paws once there's a reward when you're done.
Just as a reminder that socialization does NOT MEAN A SOCIAL DOG ❤ socialization means NEUTRALITY around other dogs. This means walking past other dogs, being around other dogs, but not having an interaction with another dog until yours is neutral. Not saying that the dog can’t be around others in the home or it sees a lot, but not randos you see walking down the street. ❤ have a great day!
