Thanks for another great informative video! One extra tip that I found helpful was to remove the existing drive by unscrewing the side 'wings' and removing the drive and the wings together as an assembly. That way it is easy to then access the screws holding the drive in on the right hand side.

Done it! I finally was able get the button to work, access the drive and restore the EX5 factory sound banks. Brilliant thing this floppy emulator.

@@mr_floydst Is not actually fixed yet. The buttons are still (many of them) problematic. I keep pressing with different angles and strenght and eventually some of them work. I imagine is some kind of dirt or mould in the boards where the switches lay because once i got one button to work it seems to be easier the next time. Now that I got the synth with all its voices I just gonna enjoy it for a while after that I will takle the problem by getting to the boards and seeing if I can clean them. That involves dismantelling a few other thing because they are located in the front of the EX5, opossite to whre you open it. Ill need some time and courage to do that. Cheers
I'm getting a "bad disk" message when trying to load the original floppy disks into the EX5, well, I just ordered a USB emulator...now I'll be bringing my EX5 up to date!😎 And thanks to this video tutorial by Mr Floyd it will be easy, thank you.

Yeah I got this message too... means floppy drive is dead. Did you end up installing the USB drive?
When I bought my EX5R some years ago, it had a Jaz drive installed in the floppy bay. I swapped this out for an internal SCSI2SD board. Either the Jaz/Zip or SCSI2SD will allow you to save and load much larger .Wave files than floppy emulators can. If you wish to keep the FDD emulator, then you can mount a SCSI2SD in a external case and connect it to the SCSI port on the back of the EX5. Some EX5/R did not have the ASIB1 SCSI Interface installed - but, these can be salvaged from the Yamaha A3000 sampler which has the identical board. These samplers often sell for much cheaper than buying the SCSI board itself from somewhere like eBay and you can also use the A3000 as a decent FX unit after the ASIB1 has been removed. The ASIB1 has two SCSI ports - one internal and the other external. :)
Thanks for watching my video! And thanks for your input. I think it's a matter of how much you're willing to spend. The floppy emulators are around $20, while scsi2sd (plus the yamaha SCSI interface) will set you back by around $200.
I didn't think about this but I guess it makes sense; because it's emulating a floppy drive and 3.5" floppies have a capacity of 1.44mb, you cannot load the large type of sample files with it that you could with the SCSI interface? Is that correct?
I have an EX7 with the original floppy and also an EX5r with a SCSI card and a modified compact flash reader. The compact flash reader allows me to load very large sample files no problem.
I have installed the USB after buying it 3 years ago. Now i can sleep in peace sir.
Well, haha. I once took 20 years to send a former school mate a VHS tape he wished to have a copy of. It was very hard to track him down after that time, but I felt quite the relief after it was accomplished. In the meantime, mankind had evolved from VHS to cloud streaming services. ;-)

Hi, Floyd - I wanted to post this for future reference by people who own a Yamaha W5 or W7 synth. These USB Emulator drives won’t interface with these synths because they don’t use the standard PC floppy drive ribbon cable. The W5/W7 uses a narrower cable that has a flat end that slides into the floppy socket. There is also no plug for a power cable on the W5/W7. And, the floppy drive screws mount from the top instead of the sides as seen on your video. Your particular drive seems to have those screw holes, but it’s worth checking with the drive seller to make sure those screw holes are there.

Yes, Alex, very.. :)) So I installed my Gotek emulator, then downloaded USB-Floppy Software - Ketron (the site has only Windows 7) version whilst my PC is on Win10.
I took a 8Mb flash drive, fomatted it to 100 partitions, 1.44Mb, using the Ketron, it worked fine seemingly.
I inserted it into Gotek and Yamaha appeared to "see" it, and then I recorded a quick notes using the seguencer and downloaded that Wave and All data to the flash and it appeared working - no mistakes on the EX5 screen, a saving bar was moving, etc.
But after than I returned flash to the PC and tried to open it using the standard File explorer - it shows the flash itself as FLOPPYO1 but nothing is on it, Explorer reads "This folder is empty".
And I did want to listen to this WAV file from EX5. ((
What might go wrong here, Alex? Any hints please? How to open it? Thank you! :)
A quick update: I got it that the Ketron File Explre should be used and - Yes! :) it showed me 99 folders and saved *.1S and *.1A files on the flash from the sequencer.
Does that mean that the flash is working properly?
How can I then downloaded a WAV file from the EX5 sequencer so that I can play in on my PC for example and share?
Hi I have a Korg i4S and got the Gotek drive, I have the problem that it cannot read the USB stick. I formatted it as a 1.44 MB disk with the software but it doesn't want to work. do you have any idea what could be the problem? My english is really very bad, if you speak german it would be much easier for me.

Hi Floyd, is it possible to buy used or copies of the origin Yamaha floppy’s that would have come with the unit? I have an EX5 with no disks, and I’m not sure if all the sounds are still in place on the memory. Do I need the disks to get it back to factory settings etc…? Hi, I inherited an EX5. It's been stored in a basement since who knows when. It works but is quite battered. The keys work, the dial is good and you can change sounds but most of the buttons don't, no matter how hard you press nothing happens. Trying a lot I got some buttons like Voice, Performance, Edit and a few more to respond but important ones like Store, Enter, Disk won't. This last one is specially painfull because I just swap the disk drive for the usb emulator (following your instructions) and I can't access the drive because the damn button not working. My gess is that something has been spilled over or maybe just grim from the years. When i opened the keyboard for the drive swap I saw that the button panels are in the oposite side so it looks quiet difficult to reach them without dismanteling the whole thing.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for watching and congratulations! I'm afraid your EX5's main board is damaged, leaking capacitors most likely - they tend to spill when not used for a long time. You could try to change the battery and do a hard reset and clean stuff with a dry toothbrush, while looking for leaked caps, but maybe take it to someone who can repair it. Prices are going up on the EX5 so it should be a worthwhile investment. Good luck!
I have just bought a EX5, mine has a SCSI port on the back, do they have that as standard? If so, I wonder if the port might be usable with an adapter perhaps?

It's called SCSI2SD. The newest revision has an USB port so you can transfer files easily.

Hi! That machine seems to have a 1.44MB floppy drive. So you should be OK with the model I show in this video. Just search for "gotek usb floppy Emulator". The $20 models will work perfectly fine, no need to buy the expensive ones!

i have install a emulator to my yamaha clavinova 103 electric piano. i did all settings very well. and installed software and copy a yamaha style to usb. so i connect usb to piano. but it is displaying a error msg called invalid data file. but i can see style is playing but no sound. what is wrong please help me ...
Hi, thanks for watching. If I understood that correctly, you can load files but some sounds are missing? This propably is not a problem of the USB drive but of the files you're using. Sorry I can only guess on this because I don't know the clavinova.
Thanks for tutorial. I've successfully installed gotek into my AP60R Casio keyboard and successfully playing midi files from imaged disks on USB. Problem is that once a floppy image is loaded via gotek the keyboard will only see that particular floppy image. If I change the disk number on the gotek the keyboard still shows the titles from the first loaded disk and when I go to play I get disk error, same if I remove the USB drive and reinsert. The only way presently to load another disk image is turn the keyboard off and back on. So, the keyboard is only loading one disk per session and not recognising changes to the selected image. What appears to be missing is a diskreset for the gotek to let the keyboard know the disk is changed. Is this likely to be a jumper issue? Would appreciate any help. Cheers
Hi, thanks for watching! This happens to me sometimes, too. Usually I can fix it by leaving the "load screen", pressing the "disk number" button ten times (so it's back on the intended number), and then loading again. USB emulators only do what they are able to do ... replace floppy disks.
Simply their replace your old mechanical floppy disk controller. Your keyboard is not able to load more folders at the same time. It is not the emulator. It's like changing floppy disks! Each folder represent a Floppy.

Floyd Steinberg you have to remove the stick and load another folder. Some people modify the emulator adding a switch so the keyboard believes that you change the floppy.
Floyd, thanks for posting this video. Last year I was looking at this option for my Yamaha W5 (same era as your EX5), and some dude was claiming you had to “flash” the firmware of the emulator drive to work with your synth, but I thought he was just trying to freak people out into buying from him for his so called “expertise”. Does that hold any validity with you? My brain nearly blew up reading about it. I got so disgusted that I just threw up my hands and gave up on the idea. Thanks, Rick
Hi Rick, thanks for watching. I can safely say that's 100% shullbit. ;) There are some jumpers on the back of the emulator that you might need to change, and that's all (on most keyboards, you don't need to - for me, it worked straight out of the box).

Floyd, sorry, a little behind the times here, but wanted to share for others that this replacement won't work with the Yamaha W5. Instead of the PC ribbon plug connector, it uses a flat ribbon that actually slides into a slot. Can't find any drives that have that slot. What a drag.
do i have to updat the gotek or can i just install and use it , and where should the jumpers be i wanna install it in my ebsoniq eps ...im so lost on what to do ...theres a bunch of vids on installing the gotek but they all show installing firmware
It depends on your keyboard. The EX5 accepted this drive without modifications, but the SY99 didn't - a firmware update and different jumper settings were needed.
I'd recommend installing flashfloppy, as it makes data transfer much easier.

Hi! I never changed the jumpers on my emulator. What do you mean by "blocked"? Does it turn on? My first guess is that you plugged in the floppy cable the wrong way. Does your EX5 work correctly when you unplug the emulator again?

Well, according to iw.suntekstore.com/images_cache/271/10019784/136383374310019784.pdf the s0 and s1 Jumpers are needed to determine the device id. try to Change this to 0 or 1 and see if it works. Also, does your ex5 work again when you disconnect the floppy drive?

The Karma definitely only needs a floppy drive replacement. You can use the same one in this video - I have the same model in my Korg Trinity and a Kurzweil K2000.
I just bought a roland w30 with one of these goteks installed, how do you save samples and sequences onto the usb stick???
You need to use that software by ipcas. It's linked in this video's description.

Does gotek have to be flashed to install it on an akai s2000?
Hi, thanks for watching! In most of the cases, the emulator should work right out of the box. If your AKAI has a normal 1.44MB floppy drive, your should be able to just swap them withour further configuration.

Everytime I put the usb into my keyboard I get "Data ERROR". It should be the same for a Korg?

I build a Gotek SFR1M44-U100 in my EX5 but it don´t work, the LED´s don´t light, only the USB Stick is blinking, can the jumper connection be wrong ?

How do I install the GOTEK emulator on the Korg i3 keyboard?
The Korg I3 has USB ports, so why would you want to do that? Just use a USB stick (or if you need to read old Floppy Disks, use a USB FDD drive).

Hi, thanks for watching! This is not an image file, but a zip containing the EX5 bank information. Just insert your USB stick into your computer and it will show up as a tiny 1.44mb usb stick. ;-) Just drag the file to that disk and you're good.

What about the jumper settings?
For the EX5, no jumper settings are needed. For other keyboards, webpages exist that show the correct settings (e.g. the FlashFloppy Wiki github.com/keirf/FlashFloppy/wiki/Host-Platforms)

@@mlcheng5584 My answer is one year late ;-) (TH-cam never displays there are new _answers_ in a topic, so I never saw this) - look at your floppy disks. If there's a "HD" somewhere printed onto them, they're 1.44MB disks.

You can buy the cheapest one on Amazon, they start at $20. Just search for "USB Floppy Drive Emulator" and buy the cheapest one.
My patch set can be stored on a standard 1.44MB floppy disk if you still have one (and a drive).

I have a miditemp mp 88.
This is a midifile player very populair in the begin of the 90's.
I dont think this player has a possibilitie to initialize a drive.

Hi, thanks for watching! As I said in this video, this thing will be recognized as a normal floppy drive by your computer or keyboard. So if your keyboard already has a floppy drive built in, this will work as a replacement. If there is no floppy drive, you can't connect this. ;-) Only thing you need to be aware of is there were 720kb and 1440kb floppy disks back in the day, you have to check that before buying.
Just search on amazon for "usb floppy emulator" and you can pick the cheapest one right away.

Tried everything to get emulator software to work . I used windows 10. i can only format the usb but can't write anything to the partition. Switched to windows 7 and same issues. The emulator software is useless.
If I find time, I'll make a short screen capture (if that'd help you, that is). On my Win 10 PC, it works, but I agree it's a unnecessarily complicated process.
Will this work on a korg O1W ?

For some reason the keyboard says no disk when everything seems to be installed correctly. When I put the usb in, the dots disappear but it seems like the keyboard doesn't recognise this emulator

You can get that program here www.philscomputerlab.com/gotek-floppy-emulator.html (look at the comments on this video, I've pinned that one :-) ) With that program, format the USB stick. After that, the floppy emulator will be able to read your stick.

Hi! The I3 is a brand new keyboard, it has an USB connector you can use for any USB device that makes sense connecting to a keyboard. So you can use any USB stick, I guess. Best regards!

I've done the hardware installed, but have not yet installed any software on my computer that will read the partitioned usb. All of the software looks super sketchy.

Hi, there are some things you can try if this doesn't work.
1.) examine your USB floppy emulator if there are jumper switches or dip switches for setup / configuration on it. If there are, look up their function in the manual and set them accordingly.
2.) check if your USB stick has been formatted correctly using the ipcas software.
3.) check if your USB stick is inserted properly. Some of these devices need quite some pressure to connect.

Couldn't you also buy a USB to MIDI interface for your computer then transfer data to and from your synth via MIDI? That seems simpler and you wouldn't have to open up your keyboard. Of course, if you don't have a computer handy, then your solution would be better.
Thanks for watching! That's true for MIDI files and Patches, but transfering samples via MIDI cable isn't possible on the EX5 (and when it's possible, 10kb/s will really grate your nerves) ;-)

@@davidgibson3724 Please check if you connected the ribbon cable correctly: There's a notch on it. Also, there are "jumpers" on the back of the emulator. Please try to look up how they need to be set up for your keyboard, depending on the model of your keyboard and the emulator you bought.
