  • Speaking at the Express Adda, Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee reminisced when he went to Tihar jail during his student days at JNU. "Nirmala Sitharaman, Jaishankar were my contemporaries in JNU, it was a safe space for dissent. Recourse to violence is extremely frightening," he said.

Loved the fact that he highlighted that in a middle-class Bengali family, the idea of RSS is literally unheard of. RSS likes to think of itself as this pan-India organisation who were there since two or three millennia. In reality, they literally used to (and still) run away from areas or regions where there is a strong recourse to using logic and reason as a yardstick to judge social realities.

What he said about the JNU air is still so true. The outside elements portray us as very volatile individuals, yet on the side of reality we co-exist peacefully with each other even when we are so conflicting in our thought processes. You won't encounter the different political student groups or their followers indulge in physical fight or violence with each other on the campus over ideologies. Rather, they fight with words, on the podium or during event gatherings, through the mode of debate, conversation, and dialogue. Even when they have to market themselves during student union election time, they wait their turn to address the students, instead of forcing their way first. Dissent is the culture here and is respected, but not violence. Here, one won't be able to point out the left winger from the right winger from any two students indulged in conversation with each other. So when one disregards JNU, they are not only disregarding the leftists, but also the right wing leaders or students, for whom JNU contributed a lot towards the person they are today. Dissent is never anti-national. Dissent is not treason. Be it from left-right-center.

Point well made. Dissenting students were sent to Tihar and thus JNU was safe place 😀

While I welcome Prof. Abhijit's views, I would have liked him to address what specifically would be an apt response to the "tukde tukde" statements that some students apparently made.
