    *Important Call-Out: TH-cam's compression does take away a lot of detail that is seen in person that devices like RetroTINK, RAD2X, CARBY, and more output. Bear that in mind with any content containing capture footage from those devices. My commentary and opinions come from the Raw Capture Files and what it looks like on my TV, I can't account for what details are lost to compression until after the video is uploaded.

      Thanks for watching and making history!! I got mine from a pre order batch that opened back in early December I think. It arrived a couple of weeks ago. They are still showing sold out. I want to try the PS ones next…

    After doing probably too much research into different hdmi adapter options for the N64, I ended up just going with the relatively cheap Hyperkin HDMI adapter/ cable (which uses the S-video signal). I was honestly surprised at how good it looked, and didn't notice any serious latency. I was very fortunate that a friend ended up giving me an RGB modded N64 with a RAD2X shortly afterward, so I have been able to compare the two.
    I am very impressed with how good the Hyperkin looks on my TV, and I'm not noticing an obvious improvement with latency with the RAD2X. The RAD2X with an RGB modded system definitely has better image quality, but the difference isn't nearly as big as a lot of people seem to say it is, though maybe the difference would be bigger on different TVs. My biggest concern with the Hyperkin adapter is that some people complain about having sound issues with them, and I have also heard some people complaining of them failing completely after less than a year. I definitely trust the RAD2X more in terms of quality and reliability.
    To my knowledge, the RAD2X will make a bigger improvement in quality vs a line doubler that only uses composite or S-video. Most versions of the Snes will have an RGB signal to use without needing any mod, whereas not everyone is going to be willing or able to do an RGB mod to their N64 (which can be expensive if you don't have the version of the system that's compatible with the cheaper RGB mod kits, or if you choose to pay someone to do it for you).

      I still don't have strong feelings about the deblur switch. I think I've seen some people show good examples where deblur looks significantly better, but I think it looks a bit better with deblur off a lot of the time, especially in 3d games. That being said, I think it always looks good either way. I have a pretty good modern LCD TV (a 2018 TCL 6 Series), and the size, brightness, color, and contrast of the screen just blows any CRT I ever had totally out of the water, even when using the cheap Hyperkin adapter, nevermind using the RAD2X and the RGB signal. The TV's input lag is also quite low for an LCD TV
      I have also been experimenting with the upscaling settings on my TV, as it can still do some basic upscaling even in its low-latency "game mode". I usually leave it on, but not cranked up all the way. I think it's probably best to leave it on when de-blur is off, and to turn it off when using de-blur.
      With the RAD2X, I have also noticed that sometimes the video will have bad lag combined with screen tearing, but I have always been able to fix this issue completely by changing the TV's "picture size" settings until the problem goes away. Different games seem to have issues with different settings, but the problem doesn't seem to come up too often to be a major issue. The options are "direct", "normal", "stretched", "zoomed" and "auto". I usually use "normal", because "direct" usually leaves a black bar on the top and bottom of the screen, and setting it to "normal" just seems to actually get the top and bottom of the image from the N64 to actually fill the screen from top to bottom, and "auto" usually seems to do the same thing.

      Great info, thanks for sharing! I’ve enjoyed the RAD 2X for SNES, though for convenience reasons with my set up I typically use my 5X Pro via Component cables. For the N64, I’ve enjoyed my RGB console, though some games tend to look better than others. I will say that the RAD 2X seems to offer the most consistent RGB N64 experience, where the 5X Pro can look excellent for some games but disappointing for others. It’s such a tough system to improve haha. For tv settings, that can obviously range model to model, but for my tv, I had to manually tell it to run 4:3 for most sources such as the RAD 2X, CARBY, and 2X Pro. I put it in game mode, and sometimes have had to mess with the Black Level settings, and that gives me a great image with no latency (that I can notice), along with no screen-tearing or issues like that. I have a Samsung Q9FN from 2018.

    Thanks everyone for watching! It has been an interesting and educating journey making content. One thing I've come to learn is the impact TH-cam's Compression can have on the footage from all these Retro Enhancement Devices. Keep in mind that some detail is always lost with compression. My commentary is in response to what I've experienced from playing on my TV and watching the Raw Capture Files. I've added this info to the description of videos going forward, but wanted to post this comment to all the videos prior to that change. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it!

    I purchased one of these some time ago and I really liked it ,I thought the smoothing mode was good ,i also have a modded RGB N64 but I admit I haven't used the Rad2x since I purchased a retrotink5x,I do want to buy a Rad2x for my ps1 though just to see what it's like compared to a 5X

      Very cool! Thanks as always for watching, it means a lot! I’ve also been wondering that exact thing. I’ve been using a RetroGamingCables brand SCART Cable for my PS1 for a while to the 5X Pro, and have enjoyed it immensely. Curious to see how the RAD2X PS would do. Something for the future!

    • @RetroBoost

      It’s pretty…rad, wouldn’t you say? This is definitely the best picture I’ve gotten out of it yet. The 5X Pro with a scart cable could produce great results, but it seemed to vary wildly from game to game to me. Some would just be pixelated messes, where others would be reasonably clean. The RAD2X is more consistent with its quality, there are still peaks and valleys to the image, but it’s great overall.

    I just tired golden eye and man is it blurry with the rad2x but thats 65”

      Some games look better than others. Whether it’s the RAD2X or the 5X Pro, RGB Modded or otherwise. I don’t know that I said it in this video, but I know I have in others. The N64 is just such a tough beast to improve the signal from. I can confirm that Goldeneye is one of those games, I messed around with it one day a few months ago. I can make this perfect profile that gets a game looking good, and then swap to another game and it’s like all that work just doesn’t apply. You probably already have, but try using the smoothing filter on the RAD2X, it’s the best way to run N64 unless you have a modded system with Deblur.

    Works on a snes baby model sns-101?

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I can tell, it will work, but in composite mode by default. That particular models seems to need internal modification to enable RGB Video output. So the answer is yes, but not in the quality shown with the SNES footage shown here, as that was with my original model SNES.

    Holy shit I'm pissed off, I went to the store to buy a Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter, but I accidentally bought a Micro HDMI adapter, which I have to take back
    Tomorrow I was gonna go back there and buy the Mini HDMI one, and now you're telling me there's some Mini HDMI TYPE C CABLE??
    Yep I am selling my Rad2x

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t know it existed either, as annoying as it is that you need to use one, they do list that on product page for it. Plus I made a point to show it in this video to call attention to it, since it is something that is going to be unexpected. Sorry to read you’ve had multiple trips and returns trying to find the right one, that always sucks, I’d be angry too.

      One positive is that they are in incredible demand, you’ll probably get offers here in the comments on it. Should be easy to sell.

    RGB looks worse to me than composit.

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The N64 is such a tough beast. I still go back to the 2X Pro running Composite or S-Video as one of the better looking options for it. The RAD2X in Composite Mode is pretty much equally as good (as seen in an upcoming video). When it comes to N64 with RGB, I think that the RAD2X does a great job with it.
      With the RGB Mod taken into account, we are doing something with the hardware that was never really intended, so there is no right answer, everyone’s opinions are 100% valid.

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TH-cam’s compression probably doesn’t help there. Go with what you like though, everyone has different tastes and preferences! For N64, the RGB mode appeared more defined to me personally. On a phone just scrubbing through some of the comparisons, I can’t really see much difference haha.

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: Watching the footage on a tv vs a phone (this video, not my raw files), I can see the various clarity differences with RGB Mode vs Composite. It’s worth noting that the smoothing is really really good, so good that I can barely discern a difference between no Deblur with smoothing and Deblur with smoothing. TH-cam’s compression makes it harder to tell on a smartphone or smaller screen. All very interesting!
