According to federal investigators, an 82-year-old Colorado man ran an elaborate scheme of counterfeit sports cards, defrauding collectors to the tune of more than $800,000 over several years.
According to Tuesday's complaint, pristine - but fake - Michael Jordan cards were among those that Mayo Gilbert McNeil, of Denver, exchanged for thousands of dollars or valuable real cards.
McNeil was arrested on Wednesday, with the wire fraud charges he faces bringing potential prison time of up to 20 years.
The complaint said that between April 2015 and July 2019, McNeil made trades online with the help of an unnamed co-conspirator, sometimes using a fake ID and multiple email accounts to obscure his identity.
To make the fakes convincing, the feds say that McNeil got hold of the plastic holders and specialist grading labels used by a prominent collectors' authentication company.
Among the cards he faked was a 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card, falsely graded "10 out of 10" for quality, prosecutors said - exchanging one for $4,500 and other similar cards for two valuable Tom Brady cards.
That Michael Jordan card is described on PSA's website as "the most important modern card from any sport in the entire hobby."
The card grading company said a mint-condition version recently sold for $130,102, adding that it is "the most heavily counterfeited card in the hobby."

It happened to me... I was just getting back into cards. I met Gilbert McNieil at the Denver airport and bought a fake PSA 10 Jordan rc. I checked the PSA site and app. The slab serial number came up in the PSA database. The Fake PSA slab looked perfect. Lighthouse holder. At the time of the purchase the Jordan RC was selling for $18K. 2 months later they jumped to $30K. I paid $15K . So I wasn't getting some crazy red flag deal for $4500. The card is beautiful btw. Just a fake. He had an accomplice who went by the name Sylvester. They are both guilty as hell. I worked with the F.B.I. and provided them Gilbert McNeil's info. I hope this leads to me recovering my money. Just glad these guys finally got caught.

First, ebay can charge less. Probstein only takes out 5% if it's over 1000, but ebay charges me 13-15% on sales as high as $4000 (niche items not suitable for auctions, like 60's OPC etc.) Ebay can cut down on fraud by lobbying against sales tax for interstate sales (you shouldn't have to pay sales tax on any person to person sale, but businesses in another state shouldn't be sales taxes) and cap fees at 5%+$1. PSA could cut back on fraud if they did $10 fast reholders, also they really should offer a service to guarantee card grade when cracking to get signed. I bought a Ryan RC PSA 7 that regraded 6 after being signed (no damage, just different grader opinion.) Of course, PSA barely cares about customers; "fanatics" cares even less (unrelated, but the name implies they give a crap.)

Two then looking at the PSA card on the site for any flaws on the edges or corners then comparing it to the card you are about to buy. Unless you check cards phyisically, you never know if they are real or not. Some scammers don't even need to print actuall fake ones. What they need to do is just to Photoshop the image that they put up which is extremely easy as well. In that way it's easy to duplicate silver foil or anykind of special printing finish.
It's almost impossible to kick out scammers as long as checking the image on the screen is the only way to tell whether it's real or not.
A demand for using trustworthy third party like PWCC(at least from an authentic perspective) might goes up. It's all about believing the system and trusting the sellers.
    Ultimately, it's a gamble.

can you tell a real one from a fake one

  • @legionsgrading
    @legionsgrading ปีที่แล้ว

Your information is incorrect. The fake Jordans that Mayo sold were slabs that were real with real labels. The cases itself were frosted so basically they were pried open and then a fake one was inserted or replaced and then resealed.
Slabs purchased from suppliers on Alibaba will not put the PSA logo on the corners. They will make a mold of your company for an extra price but not PSA. They know who PSA are. However, you can easily laser etch PSA on the corners if you know what you're doing.

Keep in mind though, PSA labels look nothing like the new ones and they are still legit.

Don't think that's a fake slab looks like the other guy provided the old man with REAL slabs and he just inserted fake MJ RC cards in them🧐

Honestly I don't care one bit. Already rich companies are making millions off of gambling addictions and celebrity worship. These are just pieces of cardboard and as you can see anyone can make it. It's not made from rare materials, it's not some fantastic art, you can't eat it, you can't build anything with it, it's just an image printed onto some paper. This is all crazy, and sports cards and trading cards are such a waste! If there was a game behind it that has some value but even then it's still just paper that some company printed and said this is rare. We have put way too much value into this stuff and it needs to die already.
