The Horrors of picking bits of paint out of the wood! Not fun for you but highly entertaining for me! But you had a good sense of humor about it. And made a beautiful item.
All your hard work paid off, tremendously! You definitely knocked it out of the park! Stunning details and the stained wood is absolutely gorgeous! Awesome job! 😊❤
I know how you feel, I stripped and refinished a banister and all the spindles in a 3 storey, grade 2 listed house, all done in situ. It took me 2 months!
@@GM_Design Well I do have patience, got there in the end. I went through a layer of cream paint, pink, green and finally dark brown Then down to the bare wood. It was my own house so I had the time!
I just cannot fathom looking at all the gorgeous carving on that chair and saying "Yep! Paint it is!" Sorry this one about did you in, but it turned out beautifully! ❤❤❤ I do have a question - is it difficult to the get the stain and varnish into the carvings so it's even? And does the varnish want to pool around the turned pieces? Does that require a lot of going back and making sure it's not running?
I know, under all that paint was a beautiful little chair! It can be difficult on those carvings as you get end grain which absorbs the stain easier, that’s why I struggled to sand all the old stain off of them, it’s soaks in like drinking straws. And yes there is lots of going back over those to make sure the stain, and also the varnish, isn’t pooling or running. Thanks for the comment and questions, it’s always fun reading & responding 😀
I just finished watching Ahti @ AT Restorations restore an old railway bench with backs decorated like your chair’s! I would link it but I’m not quite sure how 🤔 It’s his newest one 👍🏻
Was this specific chair mass produced at the time? If you google search antique or Edwardian rocking chair, this exact design comes up again and again with conflicting info. Great job btw!
thanks, glad you liked it 😀 I think they must have been as I’ve also seen quite a few online, with slight differences, some with cane or different turnings etc. It was mainly Beech wood 👍
So glad you decided to finish this rocker, it's beautiful now!
Thank you! 😊

Great choice of stain. It brought out all the beautiful details that were lost in that horrible paint!❤
Thank you so much!
Wow! Brought back to its original beautiful state! Love it

Beautiful! Glad you didn't give up totally! Great job!
Thank you! 😊
Very nice restoration. To get at those curves in the legs, I use a rope twisted out of steel wool dipped in stripper it works great.
that’s a great tip 👍 I’m always cautious of using steel wool with my stripper as it’s water based. Glad you liked the restoration 😀
Great job. Amazing there were no repairs needed as it looked like it had a few years on it.
Thanks 👍, I think that paint which gave me so much trouble might have actually helped protected it 😂
That is an amazing job. The rocker is beautiful.❤
thank you 😀
What a gorgeous old chair!!!! I could decorate a whole vignette around that chair and of course would never let anyone sit in it 😁. Great job!!!!
thank you, glad you liked it 😀
Beautiful result after all that mind-bendingly hard work!

Hello I have a question.Have you ever used linseed oil and beeswax to finish?
hi, I’ve not used linseed oil but I have used beeswax and other wax finishes 👍
I know how you feel, I stripped and refinished a banister and all the spindles in a 3 storey, grade 2 listed house, all done in situ.
It took me 2 months!
Blimey, I don’t envy you doing all those!

I'd be interested to know what type of wood(s) are used as well. Apologies if I have missed that somewhere.
