Beautiful restore, folks like yourself are the reason that we today know how things were made and how the quality was back in the GOOD OLD DAYS!! Today, most wooden furniture is nothing but pressboard, glue, and cardboard. Nothing like how the items from the past was made!!!
I started my school in 1978. It was a little rural elementary school(from 1:st to 6:th class), about 30 pupils. On that year there was just 2 kids on a first class, so the teacher put us to sit in that kind of ancient desk/chair combination(a double version).
Beautiful! I love this. Great restoration. I especially love the grain. The one leg looked like tiger oak. At least that's what we called it. Your a great craftsman.
Beautiful. I love watching restorations like this. it's obvious that you are willing to do the work and make it the best it can be. That desk has so much history and character in it. To think about how many students sat in it 80 some years ago. WOW! I hope you make more videos like this one. You've got my subscription.
Muy buen trabajo. Felicitaciones. Yo fui a la escuela en los años 60 y usabamos este tipo de banco ,lo que eran dobles y traian canaletas para poner los lapices. Que lindo recuerdo me trajiste. Saludos desde Uruguay.
This truly shows the difference between old fashioned furniture / school desks vs modern ones. Unless someone has purchased very high quality furniture the chances of it having dove tails and mortise and tenons especially with shims for the ideal fit are slim to none. That type of work is old school (no pun intended). Thanks for disassembling this and sharing your process.
To keep my pieces from wandering while I sand them, I use a rubber rug mat. the kind that goes under the rug to keep it from slipping. Works pretty good. If it starts to get a little less "grippy", I just wash it off and it's like new again. Great video and restoration. You have a new subscriber. God bless.
Aw man, I would have loved to do this project! The closest thing I've done was a gorgeous old high stool from a school science lab, complete with acid burns on the seat (preserved, of course!) These old school seats were built to last and were beautifully designed. Just a couple of comments: Some people would recommend putting a playing card under the saw when flush-cutting dowels. That would save you from marring the surface and having to clean it up. I think I would have spent a bit more time on making the metalwork look nice (before painting it) and I would paint all the screw heads black. But I'm just nitpicking, outstanding job lads! Loved the medullary rays as well! New subscriber thanks to this video.
Hi Rusty thank you so much for the detailed feedback and we agree totally, my dad left me alone to do this apart from helping on a few of the table saw and router cuts. I'm just finding my feet with this side of the business so appreciate constructive feedback like this which I'll definitely take on board. Thank you
A truly beautiful piece of furniture from a school desk. My old school had those, i am guilty of having carved names, football teams and rude words into them! 😂
Beautiful job. I owned a rental freezer trailer business and we froze some furniture that had active wood worm or wood pests to kill the active pests and any eggs. I liked the liquid you used. My personal opinion the metal i would have cleaned it and put bees wax or something on it to keep it metal colored. Just my opinion. I loved your process and thank you for sharing it.
I sat in many of these desks. I never saw one looking like this one, they were covered with ink marks and scratches. This is amazing to see like it looked when new, good job!
Me too. But one desk you shared with another , so if you wanted anything out of it you had to disturb the one next to you to open the lid as it was the whole length of the desk top, I remember being told off or kicked.
You did an outstanding job with this renovation! Also, that school desk was well designed and well made. They don't make furniture that good anymore. I just subscribed and look forward to more of your work. Cheers, Peter
Beautiful! Sell it at a price that suits you and be ready for offers. I've had a hard time selling refinished/repaired antique furniture that can still be used because it takes a while to find the right buyer.
When I was at my junior school many many decades ago his we had these same type of desks, it was an old Victorian school and these old desks were in abundance similar reminds me of the smell
I’m glad you have taken my comments on board and if you want to know how professional restorers would approach something like this, could I suggest you check out AT restoration and Thomas Johnson. They are two of the best ones. The rest of the restorers are, what I would call furniture flippers. Good luck.
Thank you for the recommendations I'll definitely check them out. In regards to taking on board what you said I'm still waiting for your advice on how a professional restoration would be achieved so unfortunately there's nothing to take on board as of yet. Looking forward to hearing your advice on how a restoration should be achieved, many thanks in advance.
It both sounds and looks like a white oak variety. Tough to work with sometimes. I found my angle grinder and 36 Grit flap wheel well with sanding a very hard wood.
Can you please explain the use of the sanding sealer after staining. I'm not too familiar with it but thought it was to be applied before stain. This piece was a great find!! Thank you for sharing your work.
Thank you! To be honest I'm not an expert myself, I just followed the instructions on the bottle as this was my first time using it. From what I understand the sanding sealer acts as a finish itself, but is best in combination with wax or the shellac. And the bottle advised to stain before the application of sanding sealer
Have you thought about making plans of this desk for woodworkers? But in a adult size. Because that looks like a great crafting table for a child. I get leg cramps just thinking about how to sit comfortably in this desk with my overly long giraffe legs. But like I said scaled up it would be perfect for crafters.
I would've taped off and isolated the section you added to the desk and stained it darker to match the rest. I would've done the same with the dowels. It would've come out nicer.
Very nice refurbishing project. Looks great now and if it could talk, I bet there would be so many interesting stories it could tell. Thumbs Up for sure...
Looks amazing!! I love rustins products and youre the first I've seen using them. Also love using Liberon, especially their finishing oil. Now going to subscribe to your channel.
Hi Karl + Jacob, what a great transformation, some thing as old as 100 years old and your brought it back to life and looks fantastic. Earlier in the video as you were dismantling the lid on the desk you mentioned it was glued with Hyde glue never hear of Hyde glue must have been used in the day. Lovely wood shame about wood worm, after treatment the oak looks great all I can say you done a brilliant job, great video catch you soon, take care
Thank you so much Shaun, Hide glue is made with animal connective tissue, sounds a bit gross but a good use of all the left over animal remains I suppose.

Good to see such excellent woodworking to make a school desk that even after 100 years of rough treatment still functions perfectly although rather ugly. Worth restoring for sure.

Thank you 😊
It would be cool to see a set of plans made for this - would be fun to make one!
Now that's an idea 🙂
Sat on these type of tables with a loose chair in the 1970's in primary school, wish I could have those years again😢 then I would really live😢😢

@pgoessnitzer Thank you so much Peter.
The dovetails look to be done by machine and not by hand. Didn't think dovetail jigs were around back then. Great video
Yes that's correct i was shocked to see this as well. Honestly I'm not 100% sure.
The Knapp Dovetailing Company introduced a dovetailing machine in 1871.

Belo trabalho. A construção e o material dos móveis antigos não tem comparação com os de hoje em dia.
Thank you 😊
I’ve done one of these. It’s a pain😂. Great job 👏
Thanks mate, ye I watched yours, I liked the veneer you applied, I did consider that but then opted to fix with a inlay of Oak.
@ it was a long time ago. I’m sure I’d do it better now 😂 don’t have many tools or skills
Nice Work, Subscribed 🐧

I would love to know where you got the Oxalic Acid, all I have been able to find is cleaning products containing it.
Hi are you in the UK?

We still use it in indonesia back in the 80s...good memories...

I know could you imagine, probably chalk board rubbers flying past people's heads and goodness knows what else. Thank you 😊
Thorough work, well done. Very nice!
The only comment I have is that I would prefer oak dowels, 13:41 for the pattern and especially the color match.
Thank you and yes i agree my dad pointed this out to me, attention to detail 😊

Of the glues available, hide glue creates the weakest bond. This makes it ideal in cases where you might want to take something apart again in the future to do repairs, etc. This is why it is often used for furniture. PVA glue is common wood glue found in any hardware store. It forms a stronger, semi-permanent bond that can be taken apart but not easily. Epoxy forms the strongest bond and has the greatest structural strength. It can even be used to replace damaged wood. It's used when you never want something to come apart. Each glue has a specific use. And all them are good additions to a woodworker's toolbox.

We had similar desks in the late 70s when I was at primary school, but they had tip up folding seats and just the hole for the ink wells
