I like the Walnut Burr. I really love dark furniture against all my white walls. Your hand wood work and your love of the process is why these boxes are so beautiful.

Hello there young man, An old boy here. Very nice project, with a lot of loving care put into it. I'm glad I didn't have to make the remark about pre-finishing the inner surfaces BEFORE you glue up. Reference: your previous walnut jewelry box (a big no no). One thing shocks me here: You give the top of your 4 corner pillars a nice splayed feeling, but ... 🧐😖 You end the bottom of these shapely pillars with a basic square section. Compared to all the volume and movement in this piece, they look very scrimpy and far too small. I think they need more volume, and movement- just like the rest of the box. Ideally they should splay, or fan, outwards @ 45°. Think of Renaissance Italian boxes; they often have animal claw feet, spreading out. In a proud fashion. After all, they carry the upper structure structure. These feel like canes. I know everyone loves compliments, but a bit of constructive criticism helps you advance, which compliments DON'T! I also feel the junction between the lid and the pillars could have been negotiated a bit differently. It's a good idea to do drawings first- that avoids pitfalls and allows a general picture. Please don't take offence; I am only giving you my frank opinion, after 40 years as a cabinet maker and furniture restorer. You're a fine young craftsman and I'm sure you'll be making more and more beautiful boxes. Best regards and greetings from France.

@GM_Design Hello there (sorry, I don't know your name). Thanks for your reply. I was relieved to see that you hadn't taken offence. By God, I've made blunders and terrible mistakes in the past, that's the only way to learn. Mind you, I'm not saying you made a mistake, only saying it could have been done differently. Anyway, congratulations on your excellent videos- they are very well put together and are very clear. 👍 I must say you have a gorgeous array of Veritas tools, and jigs. We never had that sort of gems in my time- just had to do lots of handwork and reajust by hand and eye. Tools have a come a long way since. Enjoy your gems. Cheers. Ralph

I have long admired these style boxes for their hinge movement. Perhaps I prefer the style where the cut sides are shaped to reflect the curves of the front and back - but that adds a lot of time. My only reservation about this style of box is the amount of end grain on show at the front and back. I’m old fashioned and it was always taught that, rather like children, end grain should be there but not seen. You can certainly reduce the amount of end grain significantly with mitred ends on the lid piece and/or brass bands on the front face. It’s probably just me making this point and I’m quite happy that most users won’t make a judgement on the end grain. The strength of end grain to long grain is interesting. I’m not convinced that it is as weak as some might suggest but I don’t take the chance. Before the domino, I would use dowels. Then, along came a biscuit joiner and I used those cut down but it seems to me that the domino loose tenon is the best balance between time and efficiency once you’ve taken out that second mortgage to afford to buy the machine. I would suggest that finish is partly personal preference and partly the piece itself. Do you want Matt, satin or gloss? Will the piece get a lot of war? Even, does it need to be food safe. I think it’s hard to beat shellac is you want a fairly clear high gloss sheen on a piece that won’t get a lot of use (unlike, say, a table). If I had to state my favourite finish, I couldn’t give just one. I’ve recently completed a piece with red eucalyptus contrasted with ebonised oak (using wire wool and vinegar). It’s the contrast that I wanted to go for and, as it’s a piece that will get wear, I finished in hard wax oil. I Laos very much like using lye on timbers such quarter sawn oak as that method really makes the mediator rays pop. But, it’s all personal taste. Lots of right ways and a few wrong ways. I don’t know if you line your boxes. For most items like jewellery, dividers and lining are essential to stop knocking. Perhaps it would be interesting to show these techniques.

Excellent video, very enjoyable. Beautiful box. I don't know if that cross grain glue up will cause any issues, I hope not. I don't know how you could have got around it. Maybe a small sliding dovetail?

Great job! That's turned out awesome. I'm having trouble sourcing Zebrano in the UK lately, such a great wood to work with. If you follow ENCurtis, he's an American guy who produces so great projects, he has a video where he makes his own finish, I now use that and it's great, go check him out bud. Keep the great content coming. Atb Ian

Nice work…but…when you have access to wonderful expensive tools; why do you digress to using the tablesaw and bandsaw?. Seems like cheating…and should no longer be considered “made by hand”. Do yourself a favour, and ditch the table saw. Your hearing and lungs will thank you. You’ve mastered the bench work….stand “way above” the others without motorized equipment.

Very nice box - and very nice work. I must try that red stain option. Interesting about hand tools. If you are making for your own pleasure, then you can use whatever methods please you bearing in mind what tools and machinery you might have. If you are making for profit, then clearly time is money. Will people pay significantly more for a piece made with few or none powered machinery? Will people pay more because of the feature if it has not benefit? I think that it’s commonly accepted that using the phrase “hand made” doesn’t mean that every part is made without the use of powered equipment (be that machinery to fell the tree; bandsaw to rough cut; router, sander to finish; electric light and heat etc. etc). I think the common understanding that hand made means a piece where a human uses powered equipment to assist in the making but retains the strong element of hand tools. That seems sensible to me. In the pursuit of making a living therefore, I don’t think it would be practically possible or economically feasible to use only hand tools and no electric input. The other reason, as all of you will find out in due course, is that you as you get older and older, the amount of physical work that a body can take diminishes almost daily. I love the act of hand planing but can’t do more than a couple of minutes before my shoulders start screaming. So, I have to ration what I do by hand and what I subcontract to my machinery. All of this is, I admit, a bit of a rambling but I hope it just starts a conversation in your mind as to the question of what gives me pleasure; what is a feature and what is a benefit and the sheer problem of making fine woodworking a paying job.

The birds outside, according to the "Merlin Bird ID" app on my Android cell phone, are" European Starlings". I highly recommend this helpful app. It's really cool when you have a bunch of birds chirping away at the same time. It will recognize all of them and list them on your phone while recording. I once had six different birds during a three minute session! When a bird is chirping away, the name turns yellow to help you identify it. Oh, and your woodworking is AWESOME! :)
