Thank God for them...This old man gets tears in his eyes when he goes to an airshow and hears the "wop wop" of a Huey. It meant water, and ammo, and getting our wounded to safety. I sat on the LZ in Monroe, NC, listening to the sound that brought us comfort. Thank you.

If so, the F-8 is directly responsible for the lost mig, but he didn't even fire at it.

I remember Mel Gibson's quote from earlier in the movie, "And if the choppers stop coming, we all get slaughtered." Crandall, Freeman and the rest of the pilots, took that to heart. They performed admirably in that battle. Of 31 helicopter loads of ammunition and supplies brought into the LZ after it was closed, Crandall's helicopter flight brought in 28. And of the approximately 78 wounded in action who were evacuated, Crandall's flight took out 70.

You've got to go to the Wikipedia page for Ed "Too Tall" Freeman. The man was a BEAST. Surviving the Battle of Pork Chop Hill (one of only a few in his unit to make it) he received a battlefield commission. Then denied flight training at first because he was "Too Tall". Medal of Honor recipient for this battle. A hero in my book and then some.

That war was brutal for the US, losing over 10,000 helicopters, fast jets and transport aircraft. Something many overlook.
China even "admitted" the last decade to having between 300/350,000 of their own regular forces there fighting against the US forces.

    • @patrickmccrann991

Richard, there was no Aviation Branch during the Vietnam War. It had ceased to exist after the Army Air Force became the U.S. Air Force in 1947. Aviation Branch was finally reactivated in the early 80s. All Army pilots were trained in another branch and wore that insignia during the Vietnam War.

They wanted Loach Pilots & Crews so badly they offered them half a tour to rotate out. They were the small three crewed designed for observation Birds that served as bait for the Cobras in what they called Hunter Killer Missions, where the Loach would dip in and out of the Tree Tops @ low speeds & try to draw fire and would drop smoke if they received any and the Cobras flying above and behind them would come down and rain hell on the Position. They had a Pilot, an Observer and a M60 Gunner whose weapon hung outside the cockpit on a bungee cord.

Not true they had a separate Warrant Officer Army Aviation School and accepted
anyone over 18 with a High School Diploma. You came out a Warrant Officer 1st Grade Aviator and received Army Aviator Wings and once you got a seat you were promoted to Chief Warrant Officer. Over 90% of Chopper Pilots from the Loach right up to the Chinook and larger were almost exclusively Warrant Officers.
At the start of the War the Army Aviator Warrant Officer Program was just getting
started and that is why there were a lot of Commissioned Officer flying, but by
late 66 and early 67 it was almost exclusively Warrant Officer Aviators.

There was no aviation branch until October 1, 1985. Before that all pilots wore the branch of the type of unit they were assigned to. I know, because I was at Fort Rucker on Oct. 1, 1985 when we all pinned on the aviation branch insignia.

      Kansas Guy
I grew up on Mother Rucker during the Vietnam war.
Father was a two tour pilot there.
His first tour with the 229th AHB of The Cav.
He flew into Xray with Capt. Robert Stinnet on day two and then flew into Albany for the
      midnight rescue.
You wouldn't believe the flybys of the graduating advanced classes every Friday >> MASSIVE.
He had a funny story about Ed Freeman. After a mission the choppers were coming back to An Khe/ Camp Radcliffe.
There was a miscommunication between Freeman and another pilot at the landing on the Golf Course , apparently over two words that sounded similar, and their
main rotors clipped causing both choppers to rollover. Everyone in the area dove for cover. Somehow no one was hurt but my Dad said Freeman was so pissed he was steaming mad.

Very cool story! They were very lucky nobody was injured. I bet those fly-bys were something to see!! The 229th was still at Mother Rucker when I was there for AIT in '85. It was right across the street from our barracks and was putting the then brand-new Apache through its final flight testing. It was cool to watch! Thanks for your dad's service! I am glad he made it home. That was some serious stuff he flew into over there.

After the creation of the Air Force, Aviation branch insignia went away for many years. Pilots usually wore a combat branch insignia for which they were additionally trained in. Or transportation branch which during VietNam was the branch in charge of aviation. Post VietNam, I served with many officers who were Infantry, having been Riffed (reduction in force) from aviation and sent to their alternate schooled branches. The 101st ABN was a helicopter division and was full of Infantry qualified pilots, as well as Infantry officers who had pilot wings.
Aviation was brought back as it's own branch, I think in the early 80"s.

Went to school with twin brothers whose father was a crew chief on a Huey in Vietnam... The brothers relayed to me that their dad had said the bodies were the worst part... I was a Vietnamese baby boy who grew up in an Orphanage in Vietnam and lost my family in 1965 in the early stages of this war. Had the amazing fortune of getting adopted by an Ex-WWII marine / family here in the states. In my late teens , I worked construction w/ many men who served in this conflict. Their stories were all sad and tragic. A guy named Chuck was a Gunner on the helicopters and lasted 3 tours. He told me their life expectancy was 15 days . Always bragged about how beautiful the country was but had to shoot @ everything when taking fire. Said it was absolutely nuts and had no idea why the hell they were there. Same w/ other vets Ive worked w/in the past. Now in my late 50s i can see, the US is the worst nation promoting wars . They havent stopped since Vietnam.

From everything I have read and watched, our politicians seem to think that conflicts like the Gulf War are the rule and conflicts like Vietnam are the exceptions. I say it is the other way around. What all these wars seem to have in common is someone is getting rich, and it's not the soldiers that are doing the fighting. I am a 23-year army veteran and I wish my country wasn't going around and starting wars like this.
Sorry to hear you lost your family yet glad you were able to build a good life afterwards. 👍
