  • The Porsche Cayman GT4, it has been said, is the Porsche we've all been waiting for. With 911 Carrera S Power, complete GT3 front subframe, and the balance of a mid-engined car, this could be the best Porker on the market today. Anaheim Angels Pitcher CJ Wilson and his race team have invited Matt to the Streets of Willow Springs to have a go in theirs.

    Now just give the public the GT3 and GT3 RS in a stick and the world will be a better place. Great one-take, Matt :D

      +Roads Untraveled Make the GT3 and RS auto only. Create manual transmission demand. Release a limited edition manual 911R at a premium price. Typical porsche.

    i've been waiting for this video for months! i just wish Porsche wouldn't produce them in such low volumes, i want to see more on the roads rather than in collections selling above retail price!

      +Craig J they're still holding it back, cause they know it would be a better car than the 911 when fully let off the leash.

    Porsche has really knocked it out of the park in the design department with all their cars this generation. This car, however, is simply drop-dead gorgeous! And this color combo is perfect - the metallic blue with yellow accents inside is exactly what I would order. Looks good in the bright yellow too!
    Too bad these literally are not going to depreciate.

    Great video Matt! I think Porsche got the balance absolutely perfect with the GT4. The right amount of power, the manual shifter and three pedals every car enthusiast wants. Some of Porsche's finest work here. We absolutely love our GT4! Although the Spyder is more fun in CA. The GT4 is just as awesome on the road as it is on track!

  • @vincentvanetti9147

    Own the same one as driven, although interior is silver not yellow. That said, agree mostly with the idea that the GT4 will be the most investment worthy Cayman of all time, with limited production, mandatory stick/manual transmission and given less than 2500 were produced for America, it has it all. Highly reliable and low maintenance for a near exotic make this a slam dunk Porsche collectible in my opinion.

    I've had my GT4 since November and just love it. With modest options and carbon buckets it came in at $95K. I've had five 911's including an '07 GT3, but there's something about these mid-engine Porsches that just does it for me. Shorter gearing would be the only thing I'd change.

    The Cayman GT4 and the Evora 400 is like the perfect canyon car. Crazily good handling, lightweight, perfect amount of horsepower for the street (let's face it, 400hp is very enough for the street. More than that is just too much). And the looks and practicallity department is also good which can make them some sort of a daily car (If you have no kids).

    Longer gear boxes just give you head room to add more power. Take this car to the nearest hardcore Porsche tuner and have them build this up another 50hp/40tq and the gearing will probably feel just right. IF you can get what is now rated at the flywheel to the wheels this car would be insane. With the Exception of the Carrera GT and the 918 this might be the first Porsche I genuinely like that is approachable to buy.

  • @EFABES93
    @EFABES93 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @kolideoskope

      can you think of a better alternative? it's the best engine Porsche makes. maybe pulling it out of a crashed GT3 would be cheaper.

    • @eeterp32
      @eeterp32 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kolideoskope If I want GT3 power, I'll buy a GT3.

    • @kolideoskope
      @kolideoskope 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +eeterp32 The base price of the GT3 is almost $50k higher than the GT4, so the cost difference is minimal, plus I'd have a spare 3.8 I could sell to make up some of the expense. And at the end of the day you'd be owning a 911 GT3 (which is great), whereas what I want is a Cayman GT4, which is ~200lbs lighter, mid engined, and manual.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Stephen I did a 981 Cayman for /DRIVE last year in England with Chris Harris. It's on the free side.

    • @Stephen981cs
      @Stephen981cs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheSmokingTire oh yea. I remember that actually. Against Harris' Audi. Base Cayman is just a little too low on power for me for a weekend track car tho. Plus for the price difference between the S and the base (taking into account that the same options are cheaper on the S model) it's totally worth springing for the S/GTS. 2.7 L is still loads of fun for canyon driving tho.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen
      The base 718 gets a new engine and a significant boost in 0-60 performance.

    • @Stephen981cs
      @Stephen981cs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeff K Yup I'm aware. The S also gets a pretty nice boost in 0-60 performance, although not as much as the base 718.
      But for the 2.7 L that Matt reviewed in that /Drive video, it was just a bit too low on power. I could probably live with the power for the new base 718 since there's such a significant jump in torque.

      +TheSmokingTire understandable. If I had a track 5 min from my house and it was free, I'd never drive on back roads again. Thanks for all your hard work at TST plus your crew

    This is pretty close to my dream car. I just wish it had shorter gearing so you could get more power when you're not on the track and you didn't have to rev above 4k for any punch

    Matt do you feel this car would be better with shorter gear ratios? Many outlets say it'd be faster and quicker with a shorter set of ratios, especially on the circuit, but more so in terms of daily drivability too.

      definitely could use shorter gears. Porsche wanted to handicap the car against the gt3

      +wendysorbust Unfortunately there were some issues with the cars and we didn't get to do much with them. I did do six other one takes in TX though, including a ZL1 modified by Chuck.

    Matt, great driving. I noticed you were try to get the back-end to come around and unable to power-over and resorted to saying that very aggressive techniques have to be used to get the back end to come around. Using a "back it in"(coming in faster then usual then applying the brakes quite hard to shift the momentum to the front of the car and making the back end go super light) approach will really induce over-steer without abusing the vehicle. You can also try a little scandy flick also. It's probably best to get comfortable with it with one of your own vehicles before trying it on an owner's car, but once you master it, it not only looks cool, but feels bad ass haha, especially on track.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Batta Marwan Wait until you see my CTSV track test. I demonstrate that technique. But without a long straight from which to scrub speed in that particular 180 corner, it's hard to get enough momentum to properly kick the back out with those wide ass sticky tires.

      Andreas Preuninger says the GT4 doesn't need to be broken in

    • @mvpatrone
      @mvpatrone 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dixon Chan I was thinking the same thing. The manual specifically says no track driving for the first 2000 miles.

    • @Stephen981cs
      @Stephen981cs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mvpatrone I'm not arguing that the manual says no track driving. I'm just making the point that Andreas Preuninger, the head developer for all of the motorsport cars at Porsche says it doesn't need to be broken in. Why they still add those instructions in the manual? I have no idea...maybe there's a liability issue. But just pointing out that it might not be as strict of a requirement as people are making it out to be.
      At the end of the day, no one can ever tell whether a car was broken in according to the manual or not. But if it's my car and money, I'm still following the manual haha

    So Porsche finally gave in and put the big engine in Cayman. But first the reduced the power by some 15 hp and gave it really tall gearing so it still wouldn't be faster than 911 :)
