I got one of these over 20 years ago and had a seamstress put a big zipper up the middle and attach velcro like you did. Now to add the belt buckle and water repellent spray. Nice work. One observation: there's enough strap on that back tie to attach the buckle far to the left or right so that you're not struggling with it directly behind your back but closer to one side or the other.
I know it is late in the game but the reason for the toggle closure and tie straps is noise. Be out in the middle of the woods at night and pull open the Velcro closure. It is very loud.
@@VoiceofBigRed Won't have a need for mags unless the shooting has already began. If it's a concern, you can always add a stand-in piece of velcro to cut out the noise.
I did something a little simpler. Take shock cord loops sized correctly and tuck them under the lid, which is then tucked into the pouch. Mag in pouch, shock cord loop closed over original wooden toggle. Retains well, removes easily, costs nothing, easy to do.
What a great, clear tutorial! I also glued pieces of closed cell foam from an old surplus sleeping pad together to make foam spacers in the bottom of the pouches to raise my AR mags up. Used elastic hair ties on the toggle/loop closures. I never even thought of waterproofing these. Thanks for the suggestion. Again, great presentation. Semper Fi.
Velcro absolutely takes away from the silent toggles. The cool thing is you dont have to add velcro. Or if you do, just cut a 3rd piece of velcro to stick on one of the sides. Then its silent until you decide to remove them.
Very nice Brother Man. Elongated/Lengthen the waist strap and Fastex up in front, where it's not rubbing on the middle of your back. Can't wait to Mod it myself. Keep creating, well done.
I’ve been running the basic chicom straps for years and never felt like they needed buckles, but the Velcro is cool. I still prefer to stuff the lids inside the pouch and use the tension to hold mags in. If I feel like my mags need to be more secure I’ll close all except one. If I have problems with magazines falling out due to lack of tension from the flap, just wrap it in some tape. P.S this has never happened.
If you want to water coat it try the: "Wax coating/waterproofing a canvas bag" method. It really works well. Keeps the water out of the mags for a long long time. Greetings, Jeff
Gaffer's tape is best tape. Also you can pull those loctite glue bottles apart and there's a 1/4 full tube after you can't squeeze any more out with the applicator.
I bought one last week on amazon for 18$ (replica not issued but decent quality). I did the buckles (2 sets for 5$) and plan on velcroing them. I may also paint mine with a pattern like my m81s since theyre VERY green and fairly unnatural looking as is.
I use a SKS Clip Chest Rig for 20 rnd AR mags One I got was a more modern one with rubberized insides and drain holes with velcro and snap buttons but ordered a older model like this to do a similar thing
How did you mount the tourniquets to your chest rig? I tried them on the ends, past the grenade pouches, with a rubber band but it seems to move around a bit.
Place the tourniquets on the front of the chest rig. Take your rubber bands from the top of the TQ, around the top of the TQ, behind the chest rig and around on the bottom. It won't be the most secure mount but it will hold them in place with minimal effort. If you need an Instagram vid showing how to do this, I can throw one together.
Ya know what helps? Take a seam -ripper and remove the grenade` pouches ( as a civvy, you'll have pipe-bombs anyway ), and attach 2 double mag pouches each side. Take it a seamstress if ya can't sew. 12 30's right on top, then ya got your pistol belt;)
@@grindstonetraining Oh, drug and med bags, and trauma kit are part of my load ( I splurged on a Spetznaz vest, since the AKM is my go-to rifle, then I have a R.A.C.K vest and some cheap FLC's set up for other rifles and shotguns, that way I just have to attach the drug/med bags and trauma kit to the appropriate vest, strap on my pistol belt ( which is set up for my Glock 21 ), grab the appropriate long gun ( kept with it's vest ), and I can be combat-ready in a jiffy ;)
There is rare versions that can hold 2 mags per pouch, but they are maybe one in a million. These takes like 1.5mag, but you can soak them on water and hammer 2 mags in to strech them, they will be tight fit, but they fit. Only downside is that flap wont go over two mags, but they are deep pockets anyway.
This is so dumb! The toggles are for stealth action. It’s so when you’ve blasted off all 30 rounds of defeaning rifle ammunition you can reach to the pouch and quietly slip open the cover to get a new mag. Using velcro will for sure give away your position to the enemy! Duh!!!
You might consider punching rivet-style grommet holes in the bottom of your pouches for drainage, especially if you've waterproofed the fabric.
I absolutely should.
I modified a SKS chest rig by attaching hair ties to the loops. Loops up over AK mags and holds them tight.
Hair Ties are the shit
That's a great idea. Think I might give that a try.

I will play with the buckle placement on the next rig and see how it works.

Correct, that was their original design intent.
by the time you are doing mag changes in combat, I think everyone will be too deaf to hear it. but still doesn't hurt to be as quiet as possible.

Those are great rigs. One thing I did was put in esstac kydex wedges in the pouches so I can run AR mags in open pouches for quick access.
You just ruined the Chinese chest rig with the American AR Mags (this is a joke btw, please don’t take this offense)

Buckle was a great idea. I think the velcro takes away the advantage of the silent toggles though. Not so slow if you practice enough with them

you can solve that if you know you are bout to be in the shit just open the pouch and stuff your flaps behind them
On the other hand If you are reloading because your magazine is empty you aren’t too worried about being silent

Very cool, Bout to do the same to mine! Thanks for sharing this!
i would recommend not putting the velcro on it. These rigs had the toggle so that noise was not an issue. velcro is very loud at night
@@searose1015 so is shooting, which would likely facilitate the reload, no??

Draining holes for your magazine since you're making it hold water velcro is too loud if you're trying to hide but it's really cool I like it

Good vidéo !! Ak for ever🤩🤩🤩🤩
Did you use the old trick of soaking the rig in water then forcing a second magazine in each cell to stretch it to carry an extra magazine ?
Didn't need to with this chest rig. They fit without stretching.
It's because the AR mags are a little bit smaller than ak ones
I use a SKS Clip Chest Rig for 20 rnd AR mags One I got was a more modern one with rubberized insides and drain holes with velcro and snap buttons but ordered a older model like this to do a similar thing
That sounds like a step above what I have here.
Only bad thing is still had to attach the clip

I might suggest you just tape down the surplus straps at the end as,you should not get excess in the running straps. Thanks for the video.
You're right about that. Duct Tape/Electrical Tape saves lives 👍.
Got me a three mag and made it into a placard like parashooter's
The wood toggles are to make sure you can grab mags without making any noise. But if youre going hot, better not care about velcro sound anyway
You should use triglides for the back strap instead of tape.

What Store and what aisle did you find the loctite super glue?
Walmart. With the glues, tapes, and adhesives.
Such a shame seeing AR mags going in a nice AK chest rig! 🤢🤮 Ha ha ha.

What’s the brand of those Velcro squares? Great video btw
3M Velcro from Walmart if I remember correctly. Thank you.
4.21 hahah sorry for laughing but that just reminded to like the video

42 magazines.
One of either mag per pouch.
2 of you soak it and stretch the pouches.

Where do I get a chicom chest rig?
Amazon, ebay, and military surplus stores.
try googling it

Instead of velcro do magnetics...crawling through the bush and snag a branch and a nice little velcro noise could get you chewed up by gunfire
Metallic clicks can give the same problem. Don't change it if you're crawling through the bush.
But why Chicom when Smersh exists?
Because a chicom rig is 20-30$ while a Smersh is more expensive
Also 2 totally different styles of rigs. Should be Lifchik
